I like this game, but again it is one frustrating mother of a game. Collision detection is a bit iffy imo.

I'd wager within two weeks of play more than a few players will have pulled off less than 19s level... You need an easy initial screen setup with the diamond blocks nice and close together, so you can line them up quickly and stop the timer. Haven't played this for a while but if memory serves me once you line up the diamond blocks/get the bonus then the level finishes :unsure

Level keeps going after diamonds are lined up, but the enemies flatten out. So if your quick, you can squash them and finish level.

Ooh I'll have to have a crack at this, love Pengo. My PB of current times is around 87,000 (can't remember what is was BITD). The first few stages are pretty easy to get 19 seconds or under as there aren't too many sno bees to sort out. Best I've managed is 12 seconds. Later in the game - forget it!

Just have to figure out the screenshot bizzo and I'll be set!:lol

Great score!!RE: the second pic and second score how does one get 81750 on Act 1 :o From what I know of Pengo, that kind of score on level 1 isn't remotely possible due to 1. The limited number of sno-bees and 2. You can only do the blocks once.Maybe BGH can elaborate on that score.

Yup, it's a 60 in 1 board so after power off the level in the high scores go spaz. I had a go on my upright MAME but my Zippies held me back so I went to my 60 in 1 cocktail which is equipped with Mag Stick Plus joysticks - and they rock!

BTW, the dips are the same with the JAMMA, extra life at 30,000 yada yada.

Hard game. Took me ages just to get a high score to register.
Very hard to line up the 3 blocks without pushing them up against a wall.
Not good enough that they touch, they need to be in a line!?

Some patterns are a lot harder than others to get them lined up. Taking the 5000 for being against a wall is sometimes better than risking dying to get the 10000 bonus. What I hate is getting it just about right to push a diamond against an ice block for the final line up and a sno-bee comes along and takes out the ice bock I've just put in place :lol

Big Giant Head
21st July 2011, 09:44 AM
If it's a hard pattern to line up I go for the time bonus instead. Also, squishing multiple sno bees at once gives a nice multiplier. 1 squish = 400, double squish = 1600, triple squish = 3200. Only managed a triple squish once though.

In theory you could get close to 20,000 per act - if you lined up the diamonds for 10K and killed all the sno bees in under 19 seconds. A hard feat to say the least.

Oh btw, leaderboard update?

I've never got close to a triple squish :D

Another little tip for those who may not know, when you do line up the diamonds and the sno-bee's go to sleep (or whatever it is), try to squish them with an ice block instead of running on top of them - 400 pts V 100 pts.

And for some little bonus pts that may add up over time, when you complete a level, you should have couple of seconds to spare - you get 30 pts for destroying ice blocks - you can normally always get one if there is one near enough, but some times 2 or 3.

I'm stuck at around a normal game of between 50 and 60K most games :S

Is the way to a high score just getting lots of nice close diamonds to match up? I find the sno-bee's get a bit tough after about act 5 normally - do you abandon trying to get the diamonds at this stage of the game and just try and kill the little suckers and move to the next level?

My best run so far and unfortunately I wont get another change to beat this one, going away for the weekend... if only they had a fully working MAME emulator for Android then I could play it on my tablet!

I know how you feel. I can't believe there isn't a working MAME for Android yet :realmad: I recently got an Asus transformer tablet and love it, there's some brilliant games but where is !@$%!@#$% MAME for Android... Am sure it will come eventually :boring:

Yeah, got myself a Motorola Xoom and everything console runs like a dream, NES, SNES, N64, GB etc.. and even better when you can just plug in a PS3 controller and it works out of the box! I have tried the TigerMAME app but that only runs some Neo Geo titles and not even full screen.. :(

Massive score from newcomer OOO oh oh oh or ooooooo I'm not really sure how you say that but well done, great score.

I want to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to Danny from Gameroom for supplying me with this totally awesome Magstick Plus. It's the most solid Arcade joystick I have ever seen, switchable from 4 to 8 way by pulling the stick up and rotating, and the performance in gameplay is responsive and accurate. Danny was also very patient with my thick-headedness when I received it, so I can't reccomend Gameroom highly enough :)

Due to this thing being so damn solid and having really chunky microswitches and connectors (again showing it's quality) I had to modify all the clips and then solder, so it was 1.30am when I finally got it on and working, but I plan to give Pengo a thrashing this weekend as my P1 Sanwa has been on it's last legs. Have been a big Sanwa fan in recent years but maybe that's about to change....

One thing this MGL has taught me is that having the 4-way option for your joystick makes a big difference, especially in a game like Pengo. I am currently using Sanwa's but in my never ending quest to find the perfect joystick I might have to give the Magstick Plus a go. I love the fact that you can switch between 8 way and 4 way without having to do/undo a few screws each time like on the Sanwa's...

That's awesome - now you need only get really good at one pattern and you can clock some huge scores. :D I usually restart the game with each run because that way I at least always get the same pattern on level 1. My best score on level 1 so far is just over 14,000 in 33 seconds. After that it's all pretty random.

If you load the rom and start a game before the demo loop gets to an actual game screen then the first Act will have the same pattern. So if you load the rom and let the demo loop run for a while before starting a game you will get different patterns.

Berzerk is the same, except every screen is the same in the same order until you loose a life.

Hi Brad,

It's important everyone has fun and something to aim for in the MGL. Posting a massive score to start with ruins everyone elses motivation.
For example your 768,100 in Terra Cresta: Great score, well done, but no one else could beat 300,000.
These 80-85 games are the cream of the crop of ingenious, challenging and incredibly frustrating games to play. Note the broken stool earlier.
Pengo is definitely in the broken stool, smash the glass and terrible cursing category!

Hehe....I've had a couple - lost a 24" 1080p monitor to a gaming weekend... Broke the seat in my hyperdrive (pc racing chassis) when I had huge crash playing online and was getting a bit too excited.. smashed a wireless gamepad once in pure frustration.. it's collateral damage.

Definitely agree with you on that point for sure. I'm not upset just bemused. Given your first score I didn't for a second believe I'd retain the lead and given your second I'm not sure I'll invest further time with Mega Meat about to start YAY

Terra Cresta is unique for me in that its the only game I ever truly mastered...I did leave it a week before I posted a massive score though ;) You should have a look at the other games that have been played. Some monsters in there!

Brad I checked the MGL scores and they are very good.
But what is fun and important is that all types of characters can play these games, whether they get a high score or not, and just enjoy these great creative games.

Terra Cresta is a great game and I played it a lot in the arcades when it all happened!
The arcade was THE place to go back then, in the early 80s, the lights, sounds ......
Playing the Williams Blaster at 11pm at the arcade, on the duromould machine too (an extremely rare game), blasting the #$%^& out of the robots, cats, materminds, saucers etc.
The adrenalin rush using the thruster (the game control, not what your thinking!) through planetoids! Man that was great!
Or Sinistar late in the evening, the black dedicated cockpit (no not what your thinking!), the sounds, the fear of Sinistar, "I LIVE". Awesome!

Maybe we can organise an arcade event where these originals reside in Oz, we fly in cheap Virgin airlines,
pay the guy for using his machines by using $1 coins to play them and provide free food for the host,
and just enjoy the weekend!

Loved Jammas story of anguish, ie expressing passion on the machine.
Done it many times, especially in the old old days on the pinnies.
Bent them pinnie legs back to hell and back, and almost had the machine tip over on to the floor - embarassing!

I'd be all for an MGL meet :D though we of the MGL are far and wide, Perth to Tassie... something to ponder for the future though.

Sounds like you'd like an AA Mega Meet. The biggest one of the year is on this weekend In Brisbane, but there's quite a few meets in different states during the year, if you're keen checkout the meet threads.

Just realised I hadn't posted yet... after my previous PB on this game being a mere 83k, have been making 100k pretty consistantly over the last couple days - since installing the new Magstick Plus :) Really helps in a game like this with lots of short sharp changes of direction.

Yep 12 seconds is my best time in recent efforts, did an 11 second round once but yet to match that. I find that you gotta get a good score in the early rounds or it's just too hard. Go for the diamonds or the time bonus? Hard choice sometimes.

Is it just me or is it once you lose the first man it's all downhill from there?

Luck of the draw regarding the diamond blocks plays a pretty big part, especially once the sno-bees start to Turbo up.

Just a bit of trivia for those enjoying to play Pengo:
If you play it enough, you may notice a bug in the original game board as well as in the MAME version.
When you push a diamond and kill a sno-bee (you know those guys on steroids after round 10), rarely, the block turns blue, so only 2 diamonds are left on the board.
If you try to use this block with the other 2 diamonds, it does not count as three, so you can't collect the 10,000 and the frustration just mounts.
I wonder if any of you have had it happen to you in this MGL tournament?

On losing your first life and going downhill, I can only suggest to just keep playing positive and play great, good things happen!

Great work you guys on 11-12 sec rounds - very impressive!

I'm stoked I hit a new PB tonight, had I not had to spend theday replacing a window frame I may have had more time however I'm not sure I could have bested my new PB. I guess I was in the zone! For example, for the TG and MAME scores, it would need the right equipment, and 4 way is the only way.

To reply to Jammasized - yes, the difficulty also resets so it's a reprieve of sorts I suppose. Kind of like the Galaga round 10 no fire reprieve.

Knowing this now I now have a tangible target - round 16 is as hard as it gets! I'm going to have to have a crack on the hardest setting - just for a laugh.

Oh and as for a reply to 000's score - out of time so I concede defeat but happily take 2nd. Good show 000, good show indeed.

The challenge in gaming effectively is to have the right equipment.
For example, if the TG and MAME scores are to be believed, ie over 1 MILL on Pengo on Medium difficulty, it would need the right equipment, and 4 way is the only way.

As for the authenticity of those scores on this setting, I have strong doubt.

I played the game when it came out in 1983.
On the next setting below medium, I scored over 1 Mill. and it takes about 9 times through round 16.
On this medium setting, with 4 pengos, and steroid sno-bees visited 9 x 16 times, and the MAME record about 16 x 16 times, it makes for a good story, like Santa.
As you know, one error on round 12-16 in any of those games can be close to a total game wipeout.

But it makes for fun reading!

I tend to believe Twin Galaxy Scores, since they only accept mame INP files as verification, which is a very strong method of verification. I'm no expert on INP but I think it's very hard to forge.

There's many many great gamers in the world, many who have continued gaming from the 80's on, and have great talent. And there's many other games much harder than Pengo where ridiculously high scores are achieved by talented gamers.
