 Here be the nominations thread for MGL 13

Nominations for MGL 13 will run until June 11th, and be along the following lines:

* Each player can nominate up to a maximum of 5 games.

* The game must be playable in Mame and be score based.

* Each game can be nominated once only.

* Any game played in MGL 12 can't be nominated for this MGL.

* Try and mix up your nominations - IE, don't nominate 5 shooters or 5 platformers, cause variety is the spice of the MGL!

The MAME GAMING LEAGUE @ Aussie Arcade is the biggest and best Classic Arcade competition in Australia. We all love to see the regulars come back to show their stuff, but we also love to see new players - so if you've been watching for a while but never played, just jump in and nominate your games and have a crack, it's all about having some fun with like-minded gamers from all over.

Let the nominations commence !

Sorry this will be my first proper MGL so forgive me if this is a dumb question (looked around on other old MGL threads) How are the final 12 games selected from the pool of nominated games? voting? random selection?

I think each week there is a random generator used to determine the next game.

I also use the Blackend theme and have to highlight the text. no biggie.

God I'd love to see hyper olympics come up, what an exhausting week that would be :)

That was my nom :D

I hope I have my cabinet finished if this does come up, otherwise I'll have to invest in a brand new $10 keyboard to bash the hell out of

When my parents owned a 7 day shop, Hyper Olympics was one of my favorite games (we got lots of different games on a monthly swap from the local arcade to profit share). Big one for quick running was to use a 20cent coin to rub across the buttons :D But that would earn you a banning from the arcade if caught

Another guy, who was the best of all the people that played at our shop, used to use thumb and forefinger together on each hand to run - to make his fingers on each hand not hit, he'd lick them so that they would slide off each other.... very effective way of playing, but it did leave a pool of spit on the button when he was finished  lovely

Ah, good times! We used to use those plastic coin containers the clubs would use when giving out change for the pokies - forefinger and middle finger in the container, sweeep across the run buttons fast as you could. It would make a racket, but you would get heaps of speed :)

Just thinking about Hyper Olympics, it would make a good game to play during a break in the MGL if it doesn't get selected this time round.

You could have several competitions, best score overall, and best scores in each of the events :D

I like the idea very much, maybe sometime for the future, a Hyper Olympiad over two weeks.

Henry of course nominates Mortal Kombat again, will you submit a screen this time? For any game, I mean :rolleyes

I'm happy to go with the majority vote on fighters, ie, do we allow them in this MGL? I'm taking a neutral position and not voting, up to you guys :)

im very lazy so screen shots are a lot of work for me anyway. if i post a 6mil plus score then i guess ill have to. jamma go play mk and see that the way it scores does lend it self to a league format. all this is a moot point as the likelyhood of it getting chosen are minimal. fighters are big part of arcade gaming especially in the 90's, it would be foolish and unrepresentative to leave them out. just be thankful im not nominating mk, mk3 mk ultimate and any other random mk i can find. humour the special needs child this one time.

I agree with some of your points... and I do play MK on console from time to time so I enjoy the game. Not to say fighters shouldn't be included, just that I'll leave it in the hands of the players to say yes or no. I'm pretty sure there would be a collective moan if it got spun up for 2 weeks of play. I'll put one of those Poll thingos up in the MGL Forum soon as I figure out how to do it...

Good one Jamma, the rules are simple and keep the spirit of MGL.

There have been some great noms so far, looking forward to playing :)

henry I agree that MK was a big part of the 90's, but it is NOT popular with most of the regular MGL players, obviously. So instead of going out of your way to annoy people (as usual) why don't you just leave it out? Have you tried playing http://www.kaillera.com/ (mame online) I tried it years ago, but gave up because people only wanted to play fighters, might be just your thing? That said there are some fighters that are one player that might suit MGL. Yie Ar Kung-Fu (1985) is a classic precursor to some of the more modern fighters, if you must nom a fighter why not see if this is more popular?

My noms.............

1. Valtric (valtric) vertical shooter with a difference, innovative power ups and specials, ahead of it's time. I played this a couple of times in the arcades, but it was quite rare to see. I really enjoy this game, the difficulty curve is fair, but just a bit too steep for me, I wish I could progress further. Looking forward to seeing if anyone is an expert, and also to see what people who have never seen it think.

2. Mighty! Pang (mpang) (tour mode) A great sequel to the ground breaking and very addictive Pang.

3. Amidar (amidar)

4. UniWars S (uniwars)

5. Pooyan (pooyan)

Jed
31st May 2011, 10:46 AM
Ah, Yie Ar Kung Fu was a fun game! It got a flogging on the C64 along with Way of the Exploding Fist - the first 'realistic' Karate fighting game, and classics like IK+. They paved the way for what followed, but then things then got overly complicated with long button press/joystick shape combos of the games that followed.

Nominations list updated, if I've left anything out let me know.

Anyone know how to post a Poll ? I've tried but I'm not getting anywhere :redface Still trying to get a handle on this moderator thing.

Get over it Henry. Rat contributes and plays many different games in MGL when he has the time, and has done for a couple of years. I don't see you as a full participant at all at the moment, just a MK spammer trying to stir up a response.

Super Contra has got the place ahead of Robotron due to the control method for Robotron - would disadvantage those without a 2-player cab. Same reason Battlezone was voted out a couple MGL's back.

Good job. I reckon there are about 55 games in the list that I've never played, some I've never heard of :) So there is a fair chance that half the games in the comp will be completely new to me.

I thought Arcade King was having a private joke when he nominated "Uncle Poo". I'm going to have to look this game up whether it ends up in MGL13 or not :lol

So with 80 games, that makes at least 16 people who have nominated, if everyone who nominates joins in it should be a good comp.

We have had this problem in the past lots of people love nominating but don't actually play, although last MGL the majority played and was a cracker, some awesome guy won the last comp. And he is still waiting for his trophy

Yes, I was was reading up on "parachute scabbing" :D

I'll delete my cfg for timepilot and give it another go, I think it defaults to 1 - easiest from memory and 10000,50000. I tried on 8 - hardest which is used for one of the TG categories and I didn't even get 10000 on my first attempt :o

On that point of people nominating but not playing, it's usually an issue. Another long standing classic gaming league in the UK use the rule where if a game comes up and the nominator has not submitted a score in the previous week's play, then another game gets chosen. I think it's a fair rule and encourages participation - if you want to see your game get chosen, then you'll have a better chance if you submit a score each week. I'm going to put this rule into play for MGL13.

Of course that means we would never play Mortal Kombat

I'm a MGL virgin, but sounds pretty fair. I thought joining up wwill expose me to some new games, which has to be good.

Just a thought but, does it maybe restrict some games that can be played due to minimum hardware requirements eg a game that needs a steering wheel or double joysticks or something not that common?

Hi Firepower, good to hear more new blood keen to join the fun :)

Usually we wont play anything that has special reqirements, ie, we wont play games that need a spinner (wheel) , two joysticks, or anything that most people wont have. So basically if you have mame, you can play all games.

Have a few in mind for the other 2...

In regard to the new rule 'only those that play have a chance to get there game nominated' can I give this example:

Rygar is my Fav arcade game by streets! I can't nom it because someone else has, so if a player that nominated it doesn't play I miss out on my fav game having a chance to come up? hmmm.

I really don't get this & I never have, If a player noms then they have shown an interest in the MGL & intend to get involved. Surely it's only really an issue if the game nominated by a non-player is not suited to MGL which is why we get to vote games off ?

Valid point. Maybe in that case it could come down to a mods decision, umpire like. I guess it may be decided by frequency of the player who nomed and is the game worthy of being included( which could be hard if we don't know it )? Thoughts Jamma?

That's a good point.

But I do understand where Jamma is coming from in implementing this rule.

Two possible solutions:

1. Game one of the comp will be any of the nominated games. Every game after, can only come up if the person who nominated has played in some/all of the previous games. I know some people are time limited, as I am, but honestly, even if you hate a game that comes up - you have a whole week (this time, two weeks previously) to get one score in the MGL. That is a whole 5 minutes of your time.
If you can't spare 5 minutes a week for the MGL, then why nominate in the first place?

2. Allow multiple nominations of a game. e.g. if there are 3 players in the MGL (simple example) and they nominate between them 15 games:
- Donkey Kong x 3 (i.e. everyone nominates it)
- Scramble x 2
- Pac Man x 2
- Mario Bros x 1
- Burnin' Rubber x 1
- Time Pilot x 3
- Bombjack x 2
If player 1 nominated DK, Scramble, Pacman, Time Pilot & Burnin' Rubber and didn't play in the previous round, then the chance of these games coming up next round would be changed by taking 1 off the nominations. This would be possible to do, but makes the selection process unnecessarily complicated. e.g. in this case, Player 1 was the only one to nominate Burnin' Rubber so this game would be taken out of the running for the rest of the tournament.

No mate, you're misunderstanding. It only applies to the previous week's play.

EG For 12 weeks, Rygar (your favourite game) has an equal chance of coming up as any other game. Only if the person who nominated Rygar doesn't submit a score in the previous week, would it be passed over (if it came up). For you to 'miss out on your favourite game' that would mean the nominator of Rygar would have to not submit a score for the whole 12 weeks. Many people have nominated my favourites too, but so what? I'll take my chances.

The rule is about encouraging participation, but mate, it's not really a big deal... If enough people say nay, then happy to go with the majority. So far there's been a fair few more voices of approval than dissaproval.

But to counter your Rygar example. Henrybulldog who always nominates games but never submits a single score, has nominated Mortal Kombat. Want to play that for 2 weeks ? Really ? :lol

The idea of not allowing multiple nominations has been discussed before and tossed out. Otherwise some people (you know who you are!) nominate 5 of the same game, then they don't play a single one. Hence the rule again.

Regarding your point 1: the first game of the comp is always going to be 'any' game - cause there hasn't been a previous week yet.

Thanks for clearing that up :)

Another way to deal with this would be to not allow people to nominate unless they have previously participated in an MGL. Maybe this would stop new people from joining but I doubt it. MGL 13 will be my first crack at this, and not being allowing to nominate wouldn't have made a difference to me joining :)

Point taken. But surely common sense dictates one person can not nominate a game more than once.

Whoops. Sorry, you meant someone nomination 5 games of the same and not playing - e.g. several from the MK series

Out of curiosity, isnt MGL13 going to be staggered ie 2 weeks per game, each game commencing 1 week apart with one game in its 1st week and the other in its final week.

If this is the case, will removing nominations if you have not posted a score for the previous game work. You could technically post a score in the second week, after the date your nominated game commences.

The only way this would work is if you are required, as a minimum to post a score in week 1 for each game.

Could have posting a score in the first week to set a benchmark for the second week.

Yep, that is the only way anyone will get close the the mame record 1,000,000+ pts. The arcade record is over 2,000,000 I think

The official records are dips on: 3 players, extra every 30,000 and hard setting. I swapped back to easy setting as that is what the last MGL was played using which is the default game setting.

I've got 406,000 on easy and 361 on hard. There doesn't seem to be much difference between hard and easy. Dump trucks will drop rocks from pattern 1 on hard, they don't on easy. They also don't seem to dump on pattern 4 and some other patterns on easy either, but do on every pattern on hard. I should really swap back to hard setting if I'm going to get my name up in lights in TG. :D

That was at the Expo in Tassie, right ? I think I remember reading your post and being oh-so envious...

Funnily enough I think the game actually plays way better with a joystick... I played it heaps in Arcades as a kid, using all those buttons-only was kinda tricky. To be able to choose all the types of games available you need an external keyboard with Mame though - there's 10 different game settings for Space War for Gravity, Ship Speed, Bullet SPeed, Sun/Black hole settings, and each one presents a different challenge. 2-Player only, but for me, one of the greatest video games of all time. Space War started life on big old PDP mainframe computers way back before Arcades were even thought of... 1962 was it's first incarnation. One of the coders for the game based the game on what he read in EE Doc Smith's 'Lensmen' series. Just a few facts - but there's so much other history swirling around it. I like to think of myself a child of Space War :)

Cheers Retroz0r,

Karate Champ is a 2-joystick game, so I'm afraid we can't play it. Even though it's an awesome game and I love it :( Dkong hit the nail on the head in his earlier post, if you can play it with a joystick and three buttons then it makes the grade.

If you'd like to nominate something else in it's place go right ahead.

I think I remember reading that the Luna City guy went through a divorce and sold off all/most of the games, RIP Luna City...

Sad... :cry apparantly a couple of the machines got bought by an Aussie guy - TANK and Qix, only $1200 each landed here too. It's a shame there's not more containers of cabs like there is of pins done, getting original good condition cabs is so hard here. In the US a Space War comes up semi-regulararly on fleabay, never seen one going here at all.

If you like this style of history get a hold of the book "The Ultimate History of Video Games" by Steven L Kent. I bought a copy from Book Depository for $20 delivered - it's a good read. Who did what, some of the reasons and why stuff went wrong etc lots of interviews / quotes from industry types at the time

Trouble for some of us with two button cabs - but that's ok I haven't got the coordination to manage three buttons anyway :lol I knew when I built my cab I should have added the extra button :cry

Don't think I can do it due to the aesthetics of it - I agonised over number of buttons when building the cab (http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/37933-Scratch-Built-Aussie-Coctail-Cab/page4) . Looked over lists of what games I like / play etc playing days were the late 70's so concluded two buttons were enough. I hadn't contemplated MGL then!

Cab was setup with the intent to never need to touch a keyboard so I have been monkeying around to get it ready for MGL - key combo and external directory to export a screen snapshot to usb that is hanging out the bottom. That's enough mods - I'll happily be a two button martyr. :lol

Aahh it's a cocktail cab. Mine is the same. A 3rd button would not fit nicely at all. I agree on the snapshot thing which is why I MGL on one of my uprights. I've netwroked mine via wireless though so no dicking around with USB and can change stuff remotely.

That's a good solution. I wish I could network my xxxx-1 cab for dumping roms and changing lists etc but the windows is Chinese Win2000 + Gamebox system, and next to impossible to work with regarding adding networking ability.

My next xxx-1 cab (a cocktail, anyone got one for sale?) will run a normal PC with an easier front end than the Babystar / Games Family. I'm so over constantly disconnecting the HDD, transferring to computer USB caddy, modding, putting back in etc etc :boring:

Bugger, three buttons are optimum for MGL but you could be OK, depending on the luck of the draw...

You could wire up a 'foot' button to use as the third button. Once I mounted a couple of buttons on an old plank of wood and run an extension into my cab to use as accellerator and brake for driving games - works Ok, but the feel is crap :( But one foot button might be ok to use if it's only a smart bomb, change weapon, or something like that, and would give you the functionality without sacrificing your aesthetic.

List updated = 96 games in total. Anyone want to bump it up to 100 before I close nominations :)

Hmmm, there are 38 games in the list I've never played before, and 14 games that I have played in the MGL previously, so a good chance I'll see something new.

Game I'd most like to see picked - Pleiades.
Game I'd least like to see picked - Ladybug.

Either or will do I believe. F12 does it in mame, I find this quick and easy and it makes a nice small file (under 20k), no need to resize files like with a camera

I'm going to do some warm up Bump 'n Jump this afternoon for the comp tonight - get the fingers working on the keyboard :) . Got Wolfmame 106 going, so will hopefully record a decent score and submit it to TG. My best is around 624,000, I think the high score is getable, just watch a replay of the guy who got this - he plays a bit different to me so I might try some of his techniques.

This was looking like a problem for me too as I have a dedicated cab with limited buttons. To get around it I took the following steps;

In Mame you can change the snapshot key to be something other than F12. I used shift and 2P start. This is done by going into the Mame menu / input general / user interface / save snap shot and redefining to the key(s) you want. Then in mame.ini I changed the snap directory to point to usb drive that conveniently hangs out under the cab.

Not as elegant as wireless, but functional.
