View Full Version : MGL 13 - Start Date Announcement and call for format suggestions

Jed
27th April 2011, 07:04 PM
MGL13 will kickoff June 12th, mark the date in your diaries/smartphones/back of your hand! Nominations will commence two weeks prior to that date. (May 29th)

It would be good to use the time between now and game nomination time (roughly a month) for everyone interested in participating, to kick around some ideas about what would be a good format for the next MGL.

I'll get the ball rolling - a 'Rotating Genre' MGL where we play 1 game from each Genre, in order. For example: 1. Shooter 2. Platformer 3. Maze 4. Other

And then repeat - so 3 games of each genre would be played in a 12-game format, giving an even spread of types of game throughout the MGL. Obviously there are some games that are a mix of genres, and some games that defy description, but that's all part of the fun!

So suggest away and give us your ideas for the next MGL. Keep suggestions within the current format IE must be playable on MAME, and score based game format. The most popular idea for a format (we'll vote on it or something) will get the guernsy for MGL13.

So IMHO lets all subscribe to this thread, and there could be a post in general chat, even I don't check here all the time.

Hmmmmm ideas......yes...well I think the limit on 5 game noms worked well.

How about we just ask people to nom a mix of styles, and if 2 of your noms come up then your out, no more.

That way it might be more spread out.

Jammas idea could work in with this, variety is good.

But as we know some games don't suit the MGL................I think we should keep the UNnom option and apply it to the game list before the first round.

Yeah - time is an issue for me too.

The most time I had to play in a MGL was over the xmas break and funnily enough the people here decided that would be a good time for a MGL break! :lol

The format does sound good but. A good mix of games is always fun. :)

I only played the last half of the last MGL but I think ensuring you don't have the same genre showing up two weeks in a row is a good thing. I think last MGL there were a few Schmups come up in a row and to be honest, after spending a whole week trying to improve my point score on one genre, facing another week of the same was not motivating me.

We ended with Raiden, Nemesis, Space invaders and carnival, all shooters, fair enough vertical, side and stationary shooters so different, but not different enough so it drains the will to play a bit.

the same thing has happened in a few MGL's in the past, you spend a week on an RSI shooter and hey presto, another RSI shooter pops up :rolleyes Game draw is random but it can (and usually does) happen that you get similar games one after the other - hence the genre format suggestion to try and give a good spread over the 3 months of play.

removing from potential nomination anything that's been played in the previous 3 MGL's is also worth doing again I reckon.

I'll be in when MGL13 starts

I don't think I'll nominate any games or I'll just nominate games I used to play as a kid. I was never a donkey kong fan until the recent Kong Off, so I think I'd prefer to play games that others like - who knows, I may just find something I really like that I wouldn't otherwise play, like I did with Donkey Kong :)

Yeah that's the beauty of MGL. You get to discover some games you never knew about or never got around to play. :)

I like the idea of nominating for different genres or even years to keep the variety up. I'll miss a lot of the next one, will still play about half the games but I'll be overseas right in the middle of it.

I am only suggesting this theme because these are the games I have been playing lately to get scores up on TG.

Also, I am new to MGL (only got on board with Kong Off) so if this theme has already been done, please excuse my ignorance... Shooter Theme? i.e. 1942, Raiden, Galaga, R-Type etc...

Oh henry, just accept that MK aint a popular game. Good thing is, i actually had a game of it for your sake. But i see you piked on all the mgl games.......But then again, 3 months of big mouth closed in the MGL threads was euphoric:lol Ahhh, the relief:D

Nah, 90's shooters come up a bit. It's just that fighting games don't really fit the idea of classic gaming, and all the stooges voted to bin it. I put it up as a Christmas game, you didn't submit a screen, and played no other games - at the moment, in terms of the MGL, you're all bark, and no bite :rolleyes

..or perhaps we could pick the top game ever made from the top 12 game manufactures..? Surely there is a wiki page for that? i.e. Namco would be Galaga, Nintendo would be Super Mario Bros..?

or maybe the hardest game from the top 12 game manufacturers..?

Hmmm, this is an interesting idea... Having two games to play at once would be kinda fun...

Just my opinion, but all this talk of different genres, shooters v platformers, year this, year that, not nominating a game thats been played before... blah blah is kinda turning me off MGL a tad:(
Just nominate games and then randomly play them. If Pac Man comes up again, then so be it....play it again. If you don't like Pac Man, don't play it!

I personally think, if you cant handle playing games listed on the 48 board and then some 100 similar classics, we have a problem. No offense, but Super Mario Bros is not really a Classic MGL game.

Rat
22nd May 2011, 10:00 AM
Yeah I agree WTV, I'm here to play the classics and hopefully be introduced to some lesser known games that I find I enjoy. There will always be a couple that don't suit me, but that's the luck of the draw.

I think most MGL players are happy with the format, but suggestions were called for, so that's what we get, and newer players will suggest things that have been dismissed in the past.

When you think about it most classics are either shooters or platformers, if you don't like golden age arcade shooters or platformers then your not really gunna enjoy MGL.

Most people put some thought into nominations so that they don't pick all the same genre, then the random selections sort out getting a variety of games to play. You will sometimes get two shooters or more in a row, and they might be two great ones.

I'm happy if nothing is changed since last time, but I do like the idea of two games running concurrently for two weeks, gives me more opportunity to play (sometimes I have a busy week and only get a couple of hours in on a game). Also if I enjoy one game more that the other I can focus on that one, or play the one I'm weaker at in the hope to improve and progress up the leader board. BUT I don't think they need to be "very different" just random picks from the noms as always. Everyone will have a view of how different they should be, and if they are different enough, it would be too much of a headache to implement.

Ok then, over to then Andy - you run MGL13, and run it like you want to. Which is cool, I'll get to play without having to do all the admin side :) Actually this is a good idea, we can take it in turns eh ? Give the other guy a chance to play.

I like the two games over two weeks :)

It is the MAME Gaming League so any MAME game should have merit IMO.

SectionZ

Some games take longer than a week to learn or even re-learn, especially longer platform games eg wonderboy, Ghosts n Goblins etc. this way players will have 2 weeks. I think most of us find it hard to get as many games in as we would like due to time restraints. I guess they don't have to be 'very different' but a shooter and a platformer might be better than 2 platformers?

Only problem I could see is if 2 really poor games both come up, that might scare ppl away from MGL pretty quick.

I'm happy enough if nothing changes but I do think some games need and deserve more than a few quick games & sometimes thats all ppl can find time for....

I know people want simpler and not more complicated but if each game gets two weeks, which i like, off set them so that there's still a game finishing and starting each week.

Week 1: Game 1 added
week 2: Game 2 added
Week 3: Game 1 ends and Game 3 added....

MGL would be 13 weeks but you'd always have two games being played and a game starting and finishing each week (apart from first and last weeks).

and ban the Veto :D.

I like the staggered start and finish idea. It would also make the final week of play much easier to manage, as its usually close.

personally, am in two minds about the veto. Why dont we just say 'no fighting games in the mgl ' instead :)

MK I can deal with but to kick out Street Fighter 2 which happened a few back just seems wrong, it's up there with DK and Space Invaders for importance to arcade and creating it's own classic era in gaming.

Looks like 2 games per 2 weeks with a staggered format is the go. Thanks to SectionZ and Taverner for these very good ideas

Nominations to kick off this Sunday. 5 nominations per player. I'll start a new nominations thread on Sunday.

Open slather, nominate what you want, no veto, if you can play it in Mame then we'll give it a crack :)

The problem with fighting games is that they wern't designed to be played for score. I mean SF2 keeps the high score going even when you continue!

Basically, they are just not very good for score competitions like MGL.

BTW, I am a huge SF fan and play SSF2T on GGPO so I do love these games but I just don't think they suit this competition.

How is that an issue? With save states it has to be all on the honour system anyway and we've happily played games that dont even save high scores. I wouldn't want to see a lot of them because lets face it vs fighters are always more fun against your mates but like some other genres like racers, walkalongbeatemups etc it'd still be a good way to mix mgls up.
