A big hello to all you out there!
I will get the ball rolling by saying this is a great site, and hope to spend a lot of time here.
I am new to this so here goes,i need some advice on what to do with my missle command cab i have had in my shed for a while. Then the other day i went to my local tip and got another one for $5,cab with an old tv inside and set up to run a playstation. So the addition begines.
Back when i was a young fella(41 now) i spent a fair bit of time playing machines and think now is a good time to build my own.
I got it given to me and all i have done is plug it in,there is no game pcb(not up with the lingo) in it but the screen fired up and had color.
My question is, the wiring inside is pretty chopped up and i want to run a multi game setup on it so should i rewire the whole setup or patch up whats there??
If the rewire is the best way to go, what would be the parts list i need, and where to get them from?
Here ars some pics of the cabs, missle command is a taito serial no 591450
Any advice would be greatly appreciated..cheers

I see a problem. Your cabs are lying on their sides. Stand them upright and maybe they will work :p

5 bucks for that is a bargin
with the green one you can go 2 ways setup a mame cab (pc and pc monitor) or rewire to jamma I would start fresh to do this you will need a monitor (tv tube) and a uni chassis from Jomac a member here) the chassis will set you back $150 ish the new jamma harness 20 bucks a 60 in 1 cost 100 ish dollars
have a read on the forums see what you want to do
with the other cab keep it origional what is the artwork on the side like ?

kongo69
13th February 2011, 07:46 PM
The artwork on the side is long gone, i think it was in a caravan park and has been painted black:(
Had a look for the artwork for missle command which ia avaliable, but how hard are the games to find??
As for the green one, i thought $5 was a bargain even just for the cab.I will check out this MAME? setup for it
Sorry for not knowing the lingo, i will get it sooner or later!
Thanks for the welcome too

Wow. Taito MC. Never seen one, although was aware they bought a license from Atari back in the day.
For reference, just because the sides are painted .. doesn't always mean the artwork is not salvagable .. or at least recoverable and preserved by vector or raster cleanup. Water based 'Safe-Stripper' does wonders. Just can take some time that's all. Always good to preserve rare artwork on these babies.
I would say put in some good research at the viability of restoring the MC first-off. You may have to meld some Atari licensed MC artwork and Gameboard to get her back .. but would look gr8. As the MC artwork files are available, this would not be too hard.
Taito Licensed MC boards will be very hard to find I imagine, but original Atari ones are still around. Probably set you back around $150-200 for a working board.

Heres a pic of my old Cosmic Guerilla cab, were I test stripped layers of old paint off the cab .. to find the original artwork underneath.

no such thing as a taito missile command.. atari made it...

that cabs clearly a space invaders 2.. look up above the monitor.. see the 3 yellow ufos ? thats a space invaders part 2 cab.

look carefully and you can see the lil invader monster lol

how i know ? i have one the same.

it looks like someone has wacked a missile command in the past perhaps ? im trying to pay alot of attention to the monitor and chassis..... it could be a vector...

missile command you can get one from KLOV.. but be prepared to folk out around $250 usd just for the board alone....

unless now you want to make it into a space invaders part 2 ?

i will happily assist you in restoring her back to mickey mouse and back to her glory.. its gona be alot of work.. i mean alot of work.. but be well worth it.. im restoring mine from ground up so you might as well grab some beers and join me.

might have to do you a sweet deal for the chassis and monitor.. i got a feeling its a vector... space invaders dont run on vector monitors.

however i might be wrong.. could be a color.... i wont know till i physically look at it.

take my word for it and any other long term member in here... dont mame it.. get her back to her original.. keep her dedicated.. most in here would agree with me...

my first step ? get some paint thinner or something strong.. give her a lil scrab on one side.. find red color under the black ? the side art might still be there.. maybe not...

My advice

Rewire the Universal cab to Jamma and clean it up, especially keep the coin door ;)

Leave it as CRT etc
Don't restore it to an original universal missile command cab ( was there ever one ???), there will be no value on resale, just restore the cab to original as can be, plenty of universal CP artwork around
either get a multiboard or a MAME AVGA - JPAC setup going

Edit: sorry saw the pic above as I was posting and thought it was side shot of the cab in question

Yes the original photo's are just generic Taito cabs

generic ? nope not space invaders part 2.. it was the only cabinet design , more like a chop down from the SI part one

http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n373/Technopope/TaitoCabinets-2.jpg

all these have a much more curve on the upper cabinet...

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZijvw-ygLL5wRAY6Kzg4zLrCW5VoH2HO-neM7sVQ4-uRotfBx http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT23VP4jrI2VPejzNI0SJUxBg_ssm-dNmYyWM8vnVdVnt4TNmlc http://www.robotron-2084.co.uk/jpegs/si2upright_thumb.jpg

all i can honestly say is wow.. fancy finding that in that condition.. god knows who ruined her.. you can bet it was done a long long long time ago , prob around the time when amusement game businesses started chopping up space invaders cabs to make cash boxes with em lol

no such thing as a taito missile command.. atari made it...

Taito absolutely had license to distribute Missile Command, as well as Sega. I'm aware of a Taito Missile Command Cocktail, but unaware if Taito released MC in an upright cab. Much like Defender. Taito had license for Defender and released a dedicated version in their Taito generic cabs with modified original taito artwork.

baz
14th February 2011, 01:00 AM
they made defender the same structural layout as the colored ones above.

yeah taito distributed missile command boards in there generic cocktail tables.

im not aware of a taito upright ever being produced for missile command thou or a conversion kit..

if they did.. it be rare as and that would blow me away.

i guess only one way to really find out is when this lad gets out the tin of paint thinners lol

but im pretty damn sure thats a space invaders part 2 cab.

Cheers 7baz will look foward to watching yours get restored.
The one you have looks like mine, i scratched some black paint off and there is red under there:D
so looks like i will get out the stripper and see what i can find.
Thanks so far to all for your help with this one,i would like to restore it to its former glory, a fish and chip shop near my place when i was a kid had space invaders similar to this one
Any tips to find out what chassis is in her? it looks like a mitsubishi moniter in there going off the sticker on the tube.

kongo i might have to buy you some beers if i can get your permission to scan your art work sometime in the near future.

perhaps it will be myself helping you bringing her back to life...

very good score.. well done...

the monitor / chassis il be happy to assist you with.

will also be happy to assist you and getting you the needed parts.

im still a bit blown away at your find.

where is that serial number ? at the back or ......

Any ideas on where to track down the pcb for it?

baz
14th February 2011, 12:22 PM
yeah.. me lol

il give you one for nothing in exchange for scanning your art work.

it will help me in getting mine back to mint and used to preserve the art work for any AA member whom may also require it for there project or willing to build one from scratch.

will also happily show you how to wire her up.

getting the control panel , monitor overlay and top header might take a lil time , more then likely we will get it from the usa.

il keep you in mind when getting needed parts no worries.

14th February 2011, 12:41 PM
Thanks for the offer, will take you up on that!lmk when you want to check it out as for the serial there is one on the back on a tag Taito 591450 and the other is on the left hand side 007810,hope this helps

no such thing as a taito missile command.. atari made it...
It wasn't unusual for companies to license each others games back in the early 80's. Look at Midway and Namco with Galaxian/Galaga or Atari and Namco with Pole Position.

Edit: It seems Taito used unmodified Atari boards as I can't find a Missile Command (Taito) rom for MAME. I wonder why they didn't slap their name on the title screen or something. On the above games, the licensee produced their own PCB's and replaced the original manufacturer's logo with their own.

yeah i know hewitson.. what i was supposed to write was.. there is no such thing as a missile command taito upright lol

and yeah it was very common :)

i am looking forward to giving this lad a hand with his spacies.. a rare find in those circumstances indeed , one would think were on klov and we reside in the usa lol

hewitson it might just be the way they did there contract... atari to taito.. sure distro missile command.. nup you cant put taito on our licensed roms....deal done...

or.. maybe its because there isnt many left and no one has not been able to source one for mame as a back up.. i honestly dont know.

is kongo electric savvy / handy man wise DIY type of bloke ?

Hewitson
14th February 2011, 12:59 PM
Probably the former. Everyone knows Atari were a bunch of tightasses.

Jack Tramiel, the manager, was literally a jew. He was also the founder of CBM. Coincendence both companies went to shit? I think not.

You've gotta spend a dollar to make one.

awesome stuff.

its going to be a big project and it will take time , but be well worth it in the end .

i know where to get spanking brand new taito cash box doors.. its a start.

i might have to bitch to spacies about reproducing the control panels for taito , he is curently redoing my lai space invaders for me.. she isnt quite the same as a taito version.

we both need the monitor perspex cover as mines also missing.

its all good fun but....

baz
14th February 2011, 01:34 PM
really ? awesome.. il get his front scanned.

do you have the scan of the other red taito part 2 as well ? ( the one thats the same shape and size as the blue one )

Whats the difference between this one and the blue? Is it just the shape and colours?

baz
14th February 2011, 02:05 PM
nothing more then just the shape.

the part 2 he has and i have,, it like a lil chunk taken out from the front view of the upper part.. thats it.

i mean you could get the red full cab ( like the blue one ) and slap it on the side of these ones we are restoring and literally use a stanley knife and cut it out to fit the side.. there is no difference.

hmmmmmmmmm

that connector wont go on a space invaders part 2 board... weird thing is that its not for missile command either... unless someone a long time ago had a bootleg in it ?

no biggie really...

a space invaders part 2 taito 3 layer will have 2 edge connectors.

just means making the proper connectors and we strip the wires off that 22 pin you have there and rebuilt it :)

that telephone cord is just going to the coin switches , door tilt and coin meter.
thats just a tech being a tight ass.

ps , is the coin meter still there ? what does she read ?
