Yes this game is a definite classic 80s arcade winner, but the collision factor is flawed as stated by Rat when it came up in MGL previously. Hard game, but i would think some big scores will emerge:cool:

Frogger is famous for how many bugs it has, can drive you nuts at times! but any game that leaves a free hand for consuming your intoxicants of choice, is a good game in my book :)

I take the MGL game settings directly from the Twin Galaxies settings for MAME, for Frogger it's 5 lives.

I reckon it's interesting to see how people rank in games against record setting gamers in the world, using TG as the benchmark. I know some people prefer MARP but TG is like the tinseltown of gaming these days :D so it's the yardstick I'm using for the MGL.

Just for interests sake, [and cause I still have three days before I have to go back to work] here's playe's world rankings for MGL 12 so far:

1. Commando (Dkong) TG World Ranking on winning score of 99,000: 4th
2. Q*Bert (Brad) TG World Ranking on winning score of 128,255: 12th
3. Qix (Dezbaz) TG World Ranking on winning score of 77,408: 16th
4. Wonder Boy (Section Z) TG World Ranking on winning score of 723,520: 5th
5. Super Basketball (Ramere) TG World Ranking on winning score of 560,900: 2nd
6. Berzerk (Kane) TG World Ranking on winning score of 13,520: 6th

Pretty good, 4 games we've had the winning score a top 10 World ranking, and pretty much all of those games the people who came 2nd also have a top 10 ranking.

Lots of Arcade talent in the MGL! :D

I really should stop nominating games I suck at. Frogger (in a cocktail table) would be among the first video games I ever saw and it's always in the favourites list along with the other 'classics' like Galaga,Donkey Kong and Pac Man but I've only ever played a few games here and there and never really tried to setting a high score... Up till yesterday I was avoiding the purple frogs thinking they were another enemy :).

sounds like I'll be down the list again but should hopefully improve on this one at some point.

im imagining a score higher then 4560 and finding out how i can change my cab settings. as bad as i am thats a 3 not 5 life score. im back now that brad is no longer a mod. wingtips tracky idea sounds fine to me but im a seedy individual who frequents seedy parts of town, cant imagine those getting a regular gig at the kids saturday morn/noon football/netball. though would be a good way to pick up angry single mums on the rebound.

Speaking of World Arcade championships Dkong, there is an annual event at Funspot in the US, they claim hey have the largest Arcade in the world (apparantly, though some of the skyscraper arcades in Japan would surely be bigger?) the comp now in its 13th year attracts people from all over the US and a few internationals, an MGL all-star team would surely go OK :)

Does anyone else find it harder when the cars slow down again? I thought it'd be easier but now that I'm figuring out when you can and can't jump onto the last log/croc without dying going for the top left spot I die more during the lvl 5 slow down than anywhere else.

Grrrrrrr, reflexes shot with only 1hr sleep after N/S.........deaths = half legit errors and half bugs. On a big scoring game I find I only die due to program bugs, makes me wonder how people get huge scores, must just be luck to a certain degree.

Might get to sneak in a quick game tomorrow morning, maybe not.

Never anything else.

Lower the mistakes, increase the score (In theory) :)

How frustrating is it watching your frog die whilst jumping in to the middle of a perfectly fine log.

I've noticed that bug a lot and whether it's a bug or not I very rarely push it with the trucks, little frog just freezes sometimes when there should have been plenty of time for him to get across.

I can respect mame's core aim being conservation rather than gaming but there are times I wish they'd fix the bugs in games like this and double dragon etc and improve the gameplay.

Double Drgaon had slowdown from the original board, so I don't think that is a mame bug. I can't recall playing frogger enough in arcades to recall the frog freeze issue. I know it happens sometimes when your frog is going off screen as well. It's like he knows he is done for and the poor little bugger panics.

I haven't seen a frog freeze, but it has trouble going in the opposite direction on a moving log.

Is that what you mean

Secondly, I think original frogger used an 8 way stick, which can cause unwanted sideways movement (Into cars etc) :(

The movement issue were you get stuck is not a problem with your joystick, it is a program bug. Also sometimes you will do a double jump or a sideways jump that is unintentional, but with practice these are predictable.

Movement needs to be done in rhythm at predicted distances and speeds, most of the bugs become avoidable, but not all.

I'm not playing too well :cry

I think I have worked out a few things about the movement issues, some of these I have always done but not tested or applied properly.

When you do two direction changes in a series of moves (consecutive hops without pausing) you are much more likely to "get stuck".

When you do many fast sideways moves followed by moving up you are more likely to be slow to tuck your legs in and leave them out to be run over (leg lag:lol).
(I hope those explanations make sense?)

Both of these scenarios are avoidable with planning.

Can anyone else verify that they have observed the above?

Couple more bugs today, I jumped off the end of a lillypad into the water and survived floating along next to it. Jumped into home and made it just, only to have the game decide it was too close and I appeared dead at the start line, ripped off again :(
If only this game wasn't so buggy it would be a real favourite, I still enjoy it, but I'm frustrated by it at the same time.

The most annoying one is the death from jumping into the middle of a log but I've only noticed that happening when I'm moving quickly, never from a standing start :unsure Like rat said you seem to do better with a nice rhythm and any time I keep tapping the joystick too quick I'm not far from dying.

I'm sure sometimes I've also done a half jump and gotten killed when I thought I was ok.

knight76
28th January 2011, 11:15 AM
Another issue I noticed was jumping to the right on a log in the top row. The frog sometimes does a weird stutter jump which can lead to me jumping again, this time off the log completely.

Too much couch surfing watching the Australian Open Tennis this week for me, Frogger has been on the backburner and looking at the top scores, don't think I'd stand much of a chance anyways :o

On that note: Frogger comp score submissions will close at 7pm as per normal but the wrap up/points allocation Leaderboard updates will be delayed till later tonight cause I'll be watching the men's final. (Go on Andy, Go on Son)

You suck! <_< Not because you beat my score......well maybe a little :p but because you made me play frogger again :realmad: I got my arse kicked....swore and walked away

brad:lol

Mate I was sure you had me with your massive score that was well past mine, I had a few more games trying to just secure second spot and just got in the groove with the traffic. I don't seem to have any issues with the logs, but the traffic is hell.

I think I am over Frogger now lol.

Thanks for the competition guys. There were several lead changes and real competitive scores.

Awesome that i took out the MGL overall high score for Frogger. :023:

Well done that's some awesome frogger scores :)

I chose to team up with my wife and ride 8.5hrs of hell ride adventure mountain bike racing instead of playing more frogger. **** frogger we had a ball :) some of the best bush in Tassie, awesome trails, fear sweat blood and tears. I love mame, but it doesn't push me hard enough :)

Was thinking the same thing ;)

I just spent two weeks of no blood, no sweat, and no fear on the couch watching tennis, and now it's all over I feel deflated, can mame replace the empty space and the Jamma-sized indentation in the couch ? hell yes it can

Nice loosing statement!:lol

Yeah I know :rolleyes I'm not really doing too well at MTB or mame ATM. Getting flogged by people I usually beat at racing because I have put on weight from too much sitting around and eating, and still I don't have time to get PBs on mame WTF is with that? I might have to quit work so I have more time ;)

Didn't want to start a new thread, so though I'd add my little Frogger achievement using 5 frogs here

Finally beat that bastard level 5!. It's always been my downfall, so my best score has been in the 17k's since I've had the 48in1. Now it's 24k. Yay for me! :D
