View Full Version : MGL 10 Thoughts and ideas

I have already received a few questions for the next MGL, (MGL 10) so best to start a thread here.
We will need to decide:

Start date
Game selection
Categories
Scoring

and anything else that needs discussing between now and start.

This is not a game nomination thread just getting some ideas so we can keep improving the league. Best to get it sorted early so we can gather everyone's thoughts who participates.

Cheers

Ben

If i was to be honest for you DKong...i dropped off because the games that were selected, for me, served no interest.

I know i might not be as hard core as some of you out there but if you want ppl to get involved and play it has to be a game that holds interest.

I know this will be hard and one of the many challengers of this type of format but perhaps we could all nominate games as per usual but only play those selected games with a nomination of 3 or more ppl??

My 2c.

OK here is something a little left field for the Mame gaming league....

But how about one series where we pick from the 48 in 1 boards only to try and grab others without a Mame set up?

This has been an idea, and i think it is worth a try for a round.

Out of curiosity, which games didn't hold your intrest and what would you prefer to play? I know there were a few that just didnt do it for me, but were popular with others.

Here in lies the problem and why im sure it's so hard to please everyone.

To be honest, I didn?t mind the way the comp was already.
I mean there were some games I hated and some games I loved, but that?s the way it should be.....
The randomness of ?what game will be next? is great....
Maybe just kill the nom?s...
Two games per person and you can?t nominate twice, something like that.

As far as dates go, the sooner the better DK.... Start the noms NOW....!!!!!

That is what I like best about the MGL, playing games you've never heard of before.

I had a few suggestions before MGL9 but after doing the 12 weeks, I think I like it just the way it is.

Being that this was my first MGL & didn't nominate any of the games I find it difficult to criticise.
PRO'S
Played lots of games that I probably would have scrolled straight past if I didn't have a reason to play them.
Competition between fellow gamers
CON'S
I guess if you really hated some of the choices you weren't going to enjoy them "can't make all of the people happy all of the time":rolleyes

My only suggestion would be to take nominations from people who played MGL 9:)

I think there should be a limit on how many games a player can nominate.

We need 100+ games to prevent practising & to keep it random, maybe a max of 12 nominations per player, regardless if a player played in previous MGL's or not. Not allowing new players to nominate games will just put ppl off.

Perhaps an option to have games removed from the list because they are not suitable.

All good ideas.
Decisions, decisions :)
Once we get most players ideas (new and old) we should all decide whats best for MGL 10 :)

I liked the fact that games came up I had never even heard of or played before, and had to learn them, and try to get good at something unfamiliar. To me that is more fun than just going through the motions of a game that you know backwards and have played before heaps. I don't think choosing games only from a 48-in-1 Board can offer this kind of interest, surpirse, or challenge.

I did think there were a lot of shmups that came up in MGL9 though. To even things out a category system would be good where you have perhaps 3 shooters, 3 platformers, 3 Aardvarks (sorry that's from ZZAP-64 hehe) and 3 other, or maybe 4/4/4. A pool of games to start with, that is then divided up into categories, then a game chosen at random from each category. It would save your forearm/wrist for starters not to play three button mashers in a row.

I would vote to include games only from the classic era 1979-1985/6. I know that's excluding some of the more modern Mame games but I think most Arcade Games after 1986 suck :)

EDIT: I think the scoring system rewards individual game dominance a little too much. I know this has been discussed before in previous MGL's and the current system is preferred so this is just my 2 cents. IE if a game is chosen where some people are freakishly good at it ie Galaga, the scores go so high that those for example getting a million+ get a massive advantage in points awarded at the end of game over the regular joes. I kind of favour the MotoGP style of scoring - you get an even competition, and more chance for people to catch up, who are behind.

MotoGP:

1st 25
2nd 20
3rd 16
4th 13
5th 11
6th 10
7th 9
8th 8
9th 7
10th 6
11th 5
12th 4
13th 3
14th 2
15th 1

Finish outside of 15 places you get jack.

I agree with this
I am leaning towards this type of scoring system (plus easier to work on tally day:p) and using the above points reduce midweek bonus to 5 points would be fair.

moto gp style points gets my vote, good idea.

I reckon you should have a participation bonus for competing each week. So even if you suck each and every week your still getting a few points. Means consistant playing has a reward

Yep and keep the points system as close as possible. Currently if you pwned in one week, eg winner scores 1 mil and you get sweet FA then your season is over as your not likely to catch up.

Seems that all the mid week bonus does most of the time is give the weeks eventual winner even more points. Piss it off I reckon

I add my vote to drop the midweek points too. Seems there's enough interested people anyway in the comp to get people posting scores early?

What about some sort of 'holding' penalty though  as posting your high in the last hour of the comp is a little bit anti-competitive. imo.

Actually that wont work, as there may be people who genuinely get a high in the last hour anyway :unsure

Like the moto scoring...

Midweek could be just one point, some incentive to post, but not a big double bonus for top players of that game.

I enjoy non mainstream games, so I vote keep that. Maybe one MGL can be 48 games only, but then back to free for all.

I think limiting noms to about 5 each would be good.

After noms if a game gets a large majority "piss off" vote before second day, then yep.

I'm mostly a classic era man also, and I think others are, but the odd non classic era should be tolerated, and voted as "piss off" it it really does suck :)

Oh and just to make it fair I think fringert should be handicapped, perhaps I could poke him in the eye and see how he goes then? or in true corner shop style he should play with all the curtains open and the sun streaming in onto his monitor while a mate juggles a bit of cardboard around to try to block out the light?

Thoughts Dk.....some good suggestions in there. "MGL X" is it nearing upon us:D

DKong
5th November 2009, 04:34 PM
Ok
Have decided the Moto GP scoring is the way to go, will drop midweek points (for the next round anyway).
Was 50/50 with the participation points and have decided against but will leave that open for another round.
Will make scoring day a lot easier anyway :D

I think 5 games is a good limit for nominations and if you are not going to play just don't nominate any.

I think MGL 9 had around 8 regulars and around 16 participants in total. This will still give us around 80 games to select from.

So if everyone is reasonably happy with this we can go ahead with nominations for MGL X.

Rat
15th November 2009, 06:15 PM
Been thinking, how about an "un-nominate" option?

If someone nominates a game and then most people kick up about it before the end of noms, then scrap it. No point in a game no one wants to play.

Only problem is in most cases people should take up the challenge and play some else's favorites.

Un-nom should only be used as a last resort.

Just an idea, might work, might not, might make things too complicated?

What's with the gore ? Retro Arcade Games are pleasantly free of splatter-fest, gore and blood, that's the great appeal of these games - simplicity and innocence, I don't get this banner.

DK is there a start date in the wings for this murder-fest ? ;)

It does stand out though :)

Was thinking today what would be a good start day, how about the 7th of December and have a week break from 21st Dec till the 28th Dec or a two week break.
Or do people want to start after Christmas :unsure we have enough games to get the ball rolling and players by the sounds of it

And we are mostly all happy about using the Moto Gp score method I take it.

So scoring will be the Moto GP scoring, points up to 15 places.
No midweek bonus
No participation points

This MGL will strictly award the best player of each game at the end of each week.

So we just need a start date.
