View Full Version : Time for a new Jukebox project..

Ok people, I'm feeling stupid and inspired.. I'm going to update my jukebox.. My old one was too heavy.. Now I need some brainstorming ideas.. I want something that will stand about a little over waist height for a normal size person but still be fairly light. The 17" lcd i have and the sub and speakers and components already weight enough. I need a light-weight idea for a jukebox box. I was thinking what materials will stay light but still stay rigid.. Maybe a PVC bin. A square one that will accommodate the size of a 17" lcd screen under it. I could mount the screen under the bottom side.. But I don't want it to look tacky.. I'm not too bad with timber but most timber weighs a fair bit. I could go with plywood which is an option. It had to be portable because I take it to parties and lend it to friends for engagement parties and it will even be at a wedding next year. I'm going to begin to sketch up some ideas but If i can find something that already exists that I could hack apart that would help. I was also thinking fiberglass as an option but when you add up the expense of resin and sheeting it's pretty costly.. I'm going to do this on a low budget as I do with most of my projects.. I might have to run up and down the shelves at my local Bunnings and see what I can find. Any ideas will be appreciated though.

Try and replicate one of these with an LCD and Computer NIDZ....

I am going to have a go (although not an exact replica) using an aluminum frame and plywood.

If I was going to make another one, I would be getting my mate who can weld and has the equipment, to weld a frame to mount the monitor on with a small box underneath for the computer and speakers

Something like the Naomi Upright cab but in miniture. :)

After I finish the one I am currently making, I am going to make a mini one with a line out, kind of like a Sonos player I guess but with my own HD.
This is for a friend who wants to plug it into his stereo rather than have the full box

you may find whats on offer at poly suppliers. they rotomould all sorts of tanks and bins, something may be about right. otherwise there is guys who fabricate plastic enclosures for signs etc, but that prob starts to get pricey unless you get a afterhours job.
personally im thinking of a classic wurlitzer shape and have spoken to both my neon shop and a plastic fabricator to enclose the neon behind clear sheet to protect it and i think that with a touchscreen in the middle, a multi color led behind a raised level to sync with the speaker will look pretty flash. im thinking of starting it in the next few weeks or so but as a long term project (the neon shop is quiet at present and that means very good pricing).

Scatch down an idea on paper.. I've been doing it myself.. Make it suit your needs and then go buy some sheets of MDF from Bunnings and get to work.. Measure twice, cut once.. I'm still thinking how I will do mine.. I'm thinking of making it out of ply wood for a light frame..

I was basically looking at this thread as a brainstorming thread where people who find cool things can post em and maybe I can incorporate them into my project.. I reckon one of those flat style plasma balls would look good.. I definitely want to put cold cathodes on this next model that I make. It has to be all protected so I can transport it around..

That's pretty hardcore.. I've learned in the past that people don't like it when they can't talk over the sound level of the music so the system I'm running works fine for a portable unit..

Mostly true although a had a couple complain the other week at a 40th. Mind you they complained about everything ;)

I don't want bigger speakers but I want a small 12volt amp I could install

i've designed the "BOX" and will get the rest of the material this week to assemble over the weekend.
having probs running the second screen off the jukebox software, but can run the second screen while using limewire:unsure
haven't run the speakers and amp together yet, but the speakers sound awsome running off a little stereo system.
will be seeking some help with songs soon:lol

I have decided as I need the jukebox this weekend to just revamp the current design. New front door and panel top to match a little better this time. I want it to look a bit more professional. Also planning on adding a grille for the front along with 2 blue cathode tubes that I have. I will post some pics of the update when I do it..

I have begin working on the upgrade to the jukebox.. I got the cathodes wired up.. I really want some red ones for the side. I want some that will blink when the sound goes on.. The current blue ones will probably get wired to the back of the new door and I'll cut out some slots for the light to go through once it's done. Tomorrow I will cut the door and new top and begin smoothing it back so I can then recover them with Vinyl... The sub woofer and all speaker cables are shown down the bottom. They usually tuck up inside the unit so they aren't seen. None of those cables will be visible once the door goes on. I'm actually going to put a floor in the bottom so everything sits in there nicely. I bought some corner brackets so that the sub woofer will sit in there and not roll around. It's heavy enough to not need to be totally strapped down hard.

Managed to finish the machine upgrade sort of. It's still a little rough but funtional. New Blue Cathodes added to the front and I put a new door ont he front as well as a new more even top on it. I still have to get some trimming for the front but It's pretty much done. The lettering ont he front left a bit to be desired but It was a success. Not bay for a home hack.. hehe..

Yeah Dell pc.. 3ghz machine running XP with Partytime Jukebox frontend (uses winamp in the background). I'm about to upgrade the hard drive to a bigger one as it's run out of space.. Touch panel is an ebay jobbie. If you search on there for touch panel kits you can pick up the whole kit including usb interface board and cable for less than $150. They come in all kinds of sizes. Just make sure your 100% before ordering as We had one ordered that was 19 but it came widescreen not 4:3 so had to get it replaced. Bit of apain ordering a glass panel from HK. Anyhow it all works good. Love having touch screen. People always comment about it and I could easily take orders to make them for people.. It gets rented to friends for parties and the like. Speakers are just a Creative labs 5300 5.1 system that I mounted 2 speakers either side and the sub at the front. It all powers off the Sub and it still sounds good. I used that cause it's got a built-in amp and a volume control that i mounted on the back for easy volume control. Not sure.. The cabinet used tyo be doube that size on wheels but It's a bit hard to move around so since then I put handles on the side and cut it in half and now sits about 40cm high and is about as wide as a 17" LCD screen.. Maybe a little wider so the frame can hold it in. It's all made from timber to keep it light.

I decided just to fix up the jukebox I have now. I ended up re-doing the whole screen bezel and last night bought a few meters of rubber edging from Clarke Rubber for around the front speaker and screen on the top. Neaten it up a little and give it a better finish.

the old jukebox has had a good workout lately. It's been to a party and played music for a stripper and also had topless ladies hovering over it quing up music.. If only I had a webcam built into it.. (Idea for next upgrade.. hehe)..

Tonight it will be playing tunes all night long as a NYE party. I've upgraded rhe hard drive from a 160GIG up to a 250giger so I've managed to put my entire collection on it now. It's got a little over 1850 albums all up onboard which will keep most people happy. I have put on a better mix of 60's, 70's, 80's 90's and today music to keep most people happy.

I will hopefully get some more pics of it tonight.

http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww346/Nidzdotnet1/Misc%20Pics/IMG_2718.jpg

The above pics were when I had it going at the brother-in-law's engagement party. Since then the text on the front has been ripped off. I hope to upgrade the speakers in it next year. I had it playing in a bigger area and I think I need a better system to run on it.. At the moment It's got a Creative Labs 5.1 5300 system in it but the speakers only put out about 5w each..

http://img.tomshardware.com/cn/newsimages/2002/0000785/creativeinspire5300.jpg

the thing I like about this is the volume controller can be used as a master control so I don't have to adjust the volume via the pc, Just mount the volume knob ont he back so most people don't even know it's there..

I might get a similar system but something with a little more power. Any suggestions? I don't want to spend any more than say $200 or so.. I like these systems cause it skeeps the weight down rather than putting say an amp in there which is heavy although I could get one of those small car amps and drive speakers off that.. I also like the sub.

My little girl dosen't aproove of some of my music taste.. :lol

i got a set of logitech z-2300 (2.1) and they thump along nicely. 40w per channel and 120w on the sub with a wired remote volume with built in headphone and power button. they are available new for 179 i think (less from MSY im sure) but i got mine from a guy who had them for 2 weeks and decided he wanted a 5.1 system and cost me only 80bux. fitting them into the kiosk i bought when i get around to it to sell off now (as i bought my wurlitzer 1 week later with 200w and i fire that out back and you can hear it 3 streets away ... the neighbours hate it, so it isnt going anywhere hehe).

That's not bad.. I have been contracted to make another jukebox unit for another guy so I'm looking at getting some speaker system that's a little more robust and maybe also making it controllable via a remote control.. I might get a Logitech learning remote and also interface with the amplifier. So I'm looking for a compact amp that will do 5.1 so I can hookup some satellites and a sub and controllable via IR remote.. Anybody got any ideas for me? Small amp with remote sub $200. I don't think PC speaker systems will cut it although the z-2300's do sound not too bad!..

I'm thinking for my next juke it will look a little like the following:

http://www.dialajukebox.com/images/party-hire-digital-01.jpg

Keep the lines simple and maybe put mesh on the front for good ventilation. I find that in really hot party conditions the pc gets pretty warm..

haha what was it you said about being to lowd

i find it best to turn my amp almost flat out and turn the windows volume to about 25 % then use the volume control on the party time jukebox for volume.
maybe a pair of powered speakers and run a subbie of a small amp just for the subbie

Yeah exactly like your one.. They are not a bad price for what you get and they are USB powered which is good.. The one I'm making up will be not too dis-similar only will be full touch screen, no buttons. The only button will be the on button for the pc.

My challenge is to make a cabinet that looks kind of like a classic style jukebox with a rounded top but at the same time not make it look like an Australia Post box..

The base as it happens was what our new dishwasher came on in the box.. haha.. I took a look and the size was perfect so I started building up from there..

This is a VERY rough idea of what I want it to be like.. You have to use your imagination here.. Screen will sit in it like a lowboy.. Above might have a marque like a lowboy only maybe rounded top with a light or neons in it.. Plasma ball below the screen and the black box is where I might get some black meshing.. The speakers and sub will be behind there.. Along with the PC and powerboard etc..

So I went out today and managed to find a place with the Z2300.. The sub is massive! It's got a good weight to it.. I haven't hooked it up yet but I hope to have the cabinet done this week. I'm kind of making it up as I go along to suit the person that I'm building it for and his budget.. I can't wait to crank up these speakers and give it a test.. Still waiting on the plasma ball to arrive in the mail.. I think that's the only thing I need now.. I'll build the cab, I think i'll paint this one instead of vinyl it. I'll maybe route some patterns and put some perspex behind it with a cold cathode or something for some added features... I'll update some pics soon.

New update.. I decided not to go for a tall design. I'm just going to make it about waist height.. Got some cold cathodes today which is nice.. They tested ok. Waiting on plasma ball from DX. Did some trimming and re-enforcing on the frame before the outer panels go on. I'm going to spray this jukebox. I'm still looking for paint design ideas. Maybe I'll spray it half black, half midnight blue.. Top and bottom in a nice gloss. Anyway here's some progress shots when I was mocking up the screen size for the top. So far the weight of the unit is not too bad but I will be putting a pc and a big heavy sub down the bottom.

The full kit only costs about $130 delivered so you'd be better off buying on on Ebay.. Cheaper than picking up an EFTPOS screen locally even. They work a treat.

The project is still going. I will probably work on the front door and bezel this week and get it all looking nice and done then i'll probably cover it or paint it.. Haven't decided yet.. Covering will hide any mistakes lol..

I guess I'd like to get an ' all in one ' - something around 20".. ( complete screen and touch unit - so i dont have to jizz around with trying to get it all to match up - all I've seen on ebay are the touch overlay's that go on the screens.. I dont have any experience with these units )

I just think, that a 15-17" would be way too cluttered for something like this..

that said... I've got a 50" screen from an old playchoice i pulled down sitting in my garage.. I wonder if that would work... could sure be interesting..

Nidzdotnet
4th February 2010, 11:53 AM
You'd think 17 - 19" would be too small but I get 12 album covers per row and like 8 4 or so rows per screen whuich means you see more than 40 albums on the screen at once and then you scroll down the pages.. How many more do ya want? lol.. I got 1800+ albums and i'm struggling to think of anything more I can add. I've got the greatest hits of almost everyone I can find hehe..

The touch panel kits work well. They even have Widescreen ones to suit new screens.. Plug and play.. Just plug straight into USB and away you go..

Eukanuba
4th February 2010, 01:03 PM
Nidzdotnet: do you know if there's anyone locally selling these kits ? I dont mind ordering from O/S - but i'd rather support local, if it's available..

Sorry for all these daft questions - but your build has inspired me.. and I've got like 10 huge sheets of 5 ply structural sitting in my shed.. I've been building massive shelves to hold all my gear.. but i'm sure one is going to be ' scrap ' which might just lend itself to something along these lines :)

What software are you running ?

I've been looking at this freeboxjukebox.com forum and it would seem to be fairly good - with both the code quality and the after support..

I've got so many cd's both rare singles from the 90's and albums, but I cant possibly imagine scanning in the hundreds of paper sleeves.. that would just be pure madness..

I would be more than happy to host a torrent maybe on my server, and everyone just go nuts :)

I dont know how many mp3's I've got, but I'm almost tempted to start on my entire collection again at 320k just because 1tb hdd's are only $100... ;)

I dont know how many mp3's I've got, but I'm almost tempted to start on my entire collection again at 320k just because 1tb hdd's are only $100... ;)

Yeah you won't get them local for the same price. you'll pay a bit more for them locally as they aren't really a high demand item and I guess it costs less to sell them online. I would buy them local to if the price was as good due tot he fact that they are glass but they pack em' pretty well so your pretty safe there..

Software I got is Partytime Jukebox. It uses Winamp as a backend and just loads everything up in a massive playlist that it uses to access via the GUI that you see. I use it cause it's dead easy to use and when I take my jukebox to people's parties they all comment on how good it is and easy to use. It also is good for a large number of albums as opposed to lots of single songs pre-chosen. with 1800+ albums worth of music to choose from, you need an easy way to manage it. It's got wireless in it too so i can just update the music on the jukebox from anywhere in the house.

If you can find something better than Partytime that does the same thing quicker and easier, let me know and I'll try it. I've tried many of them (Albumplayer and others and I like Partyime the best). The guy who wrote Partytime hasn't added any more support for the product for years though but it still works as good now as is did before.

Small update.. My latest jukebox project is almost done.. Just have to do the lid and trimmings and clean it all up a bit... Fired it up today and was playing music happily and the bass is pretty good on it too..

Dubbed "Black Diamond" after the username of the person I'm building it for, The jukebox was going to have a fully functioning front door but due to budget restraints and the way the economy is today I had to just make it a screw on front. It will allow access to the bits inside when required. The top will get covered next and then I'll add any extras I feel it needs. It seems to be ok now. I'll add some more CD's to the sides cause there's a few bubble spots from the vinyl glue but apart from that and the red neons behind the mirrored area, it's pretty much ready to roll..

I've covered the top with the same vinyl as the rest so it all blends in. The red neons arrived so they are in now as well. Pitty the red neons kinda look pink, oh well. I'm going to maybe look for something to do the edges in but at this stage I doubt the budget for this job will allow. I'll just tidy it up and see how it looks once the top is on. It seems to go pretty loud. The 2.1 system with the 8" sub powers it pretty well for any party situation. I'm sure the person I'm making this for will be happy with the result. Thanks for ya comments.

Getting ready to wrap this all up. I'm totally over it.. Tonight I covered the top screen bezel and glued down the volume control on the back. Also played around with a few other things.. Getting strange Write to EPROM fail error when I try to run a 4 point confiruration on the touch panel.. It seems to work but sometimes when I book I guess it looses config.. I think the config gets written to it's onboard EPROM but for some reason it can't.. Anybody got any ideas?

Anyhow here's some pics.. Still gotta clean up the edges with something and make it look neater.. Not sure.. Might see if i can find some 90 degree rubber edging or something to finish it up..

The Jukebox has close to 1800 full albums which It usually enough to get the party started... :)

was getting hot before fitting these and now i have a multi juke/fridge:lol

after running flatout for 16 hours it was ice cold! would being to cold create any probs?

Garry

p.s i tapped into the black and red wires off the power supply 12 volts, i might just try them on black and red 5 volts.

just noticed how filthy the front is! spose after the downpour on satday night a little bit of mud around the base will clean up. that was after a 21st this last sat nite (hailstorm)

looking good Nidz, i'm sure the jukebox will be welcomed with wide arms

You don't want to make the air in/around them too cold or else you end up with condensation, that's not considered good for a pc, but I doubt you're getting it that cold with a few fans ;)

I just had an idea about this project - seeing as you've mounted the screen like that..

Would it be possible to mount a dual head video card in a pc - run this software on it.. and have one of the screens purely as an ' input screen ' with a touch panel installed.. and the other as a ' display screen ' where you can see songs/albums and track information ?

I've managed to wangle a couple of matching monitors - and it suddenly occured to me that this would be an awesome setup - something like a playchoice 10 almost ?

The software was discontinued so dual-monitor support didn't come into it. It was on the "wish list" that was posted on the forum but the guy who developed the software said he was going to re-code the software and totally re-design it and never did.. That was like 2004 he last posted.. hehe.. Would be a good idea for things like Music videos playing on a larger screen and so on.. I guess If you were smart with winamp and could work out a way to launch winamp in another window you could possibly do it.

Update - I have purchased 2 80mm brushless fans and cut 2 holes in the back and put them in. Runs much cooler inside now. The pc and monitor have room to breathe.. I'm still not 100% happy with the edges of the jukebox.. it's the only last thing I'd like to change but I could pretty much line it up and send it out as it is.. I think my budget's reached it's limit on this project.. It still goes well.. I test drove it at one of my parties a few weeks ago and goes flawlessly..
