Hi Robb
welcome to AA.
We have a few members on the Sunny coast now.

How about doing an intro post & telling us a bit about yourself.

Plenty of guys around here who can mod your 360.:D

cheers mate, if no one else offers will be happy to send it to you

i am currently trying to get microsoft to have a look at my 360 (i only have like a month or so warranty left on it) it stops reading brand new discs occasionally, very annoying, so im thinking the dvd drive is buggered

I'd get the drive looked at before flashing/modding it. I had the same problem with it not reading discs. Yours sounds like it's definately on the way out.

Very good move. If they get their hands on it, they may also whack in better heatsinks. (Hint.. tell them you intermittantly get 3RROD error as well as failure to read.)

A new drive is not too expensive in the event yours is a deader. Looking at around $100 for a newbie if M$ won't come to the party.

Yes.. it will probably cost you. The DVD drive should only be covered by a year's warranty.

My advice... Buy a new DVD drive (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Xbox-360-BenQ-DVD-Drive-Official_W0QQitemZ180358176638QQcmdZViewItemQQptZA U_Video_Game_Accessories?hash=item29fe2f5f7e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C 301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 or http://www.quantronics.com.au/products/XBOX-360/lasers/samsung-ms28-dvd-drive-brand-new_xbox-360-drive-samsung-ms28.html) and ship it along with the console to me. I will put your key into a new drive and your problems should be over.)

I prefer Sammy, but many say Benq is quieter.

No worries.. can do.

Looking around $15 to post a 360 (each way). Allow for $20 if you want it insured.

Sounds like it could be a samsung drive and the fault is quite possibly the controller chip on the drive. http://www.ausmodchips.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12_4&products_id=12

what are the symptoms?
Not reading discs?

Try cleaning the laser first, if that doesnt fix it a new laser will.

I had a clients unit that would only read discs when placed in a horizontal position and would also randomly leave deep scratches on discs.

replaced the drive no more problems

well it will get to a certain point in a game and decide not to read from that point, on a brand new disc, sometimes it happens once then wont do it again, safer to replace the whole dvd drive

can it now play ntsc games?

Not necessarily. The Xbox360 is still 'locked' to the region it was built for, but some games are region locked, some games are region free, and some games have partial locking There is a listing on play-asia to help.

Lookup your game (there are many pages!) and see if it will work on the Xbox you have. (Retail boxes here in Australia are PAL)
