View Full Version : What the? My version of Windows is a FAKE???

I started my PC up this morning and got the rudest shock of my life by being confronted by the following message on my desktop:

10497

In short, this is CRAP!!!!!! I purchased Win XP with the PC brand new back in 2005 and I got all to docco with it, including the authenticity certificate thingy, so I know for a fact that it most certainly is genuine.

I've gone thru all the processes that WIndows suggest and it all still fails the authenticity tests. Worse still when I go thru the Microsoft website it advises that I should look at purchasing a "Get Genuine Kit", however all the links for it are broken!!!

How is it that Microsoft can accuse me of owning an illicit version of Windows 4 years after I originally had it installed?

I'm loathe to call them as I don't have half a day to waste on the phone, only to be told I need to do a clean install and lose everything.

I may need to try a reinstall over the top of the current install, however how do I know that won't affect all the other proggies I have on my PC?

I NEED HELP!!!

Cheers,
Chris

Chris, I've been through this at a corporate level and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I got through and had a new code given to me. Give it a shot and give them a call.

It is possible that your serial is being blacklisted due to keygens etc.

No it fooks it all up and puts shit all over your screen etc. Gives you 30days from memory too.

Windows updates will regularly check especially if you accept the Genuine Advantage patch.

When it first came out some updates did this by mistake. A LOT of people were affected.

The key may have been generated and used by a keygen somewhere and unluckily it matched Chris's. Could be a code screwup, the licence has been re-used elsewhere.....

So what exactly will that do, Dave? By boot CD, I take it you mean the WinXP installation CD?

Thats how to delete the windows genuine advantage notification tool. (the nag screen complaining its fake)
After doing that next time you try to update windows you'll be prompted to reinstall it. Theres a very small chance it will fix your problem if it was caused by a corrupted wgatray.dll file.
More likely some keygen spat out your code to someone. Best to ring MS for a new one.

Ring Microsoft.

When you pay for a legal copy of Windows, you pay for Microsoft's support. At my estimate, less than 1% of Microsoft customers actually use the support they have legally paid for and rightfully deserve.

You paid your hard earned cash for that Indian call centre. Call it and get your money's worth.

LOL wait long enough and MS may need to send out an update removing it :p

Microsoft ordered to pay Uniloc over $500 million in anti-piracy patent case

Small company wins long-running legal battle
Microsoft says patent is flawed, will appeal
Technology: More software news, reviews (http://www.news.com.au/technology/)

SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has been ordered to pay $US388 million ($547.9 million) for infringing an anti-piracy software patent.
After a long-running legal battle, a US grand jury said Microsoft - a company known for its tough stance on piracy - had "wilfully infringed" the patent.
Both Windows and Office use a "product activation" system that was allegedly taken from Uniloc, a company that makes anti-piracy tools for video games and other software.
This system requires user registration to prevent the same copy of software being installed on several computers.
Uniloc started the legal battle against Microsoft in 2003, 11 years after it patented a similar technology.
Microsoft says it will appeal the US grand jury's decision.
"We are very disappointed in the jury verdict," said David Bowermaster, a Microsoft spokesman.
"We believe that we do not infringe, that the patent is invalid and that this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported," he said. "We will ask the court to overturn the verdict."

Might be a stupid question, when your machine was installed, was you're product key used or some generic one?

Apparenly the microsoft genuine advantage thingo can show the last x digits of the product key, do these match your sticker you got with the PC?

Whole bunch of stuff about viewing the installed product key here (from a quick google, never tried any of this stuff)

Just had a look into this before actually trying it.

There is no "WGATRAY.DLL" file in c:\windows\system32 or anywhere else for that matter. However I did find WGALOGON.DLL and WGATRAY.EXE in that directory - is it one (or both) of those files that I should delete?

Cheers,
Chris

Given that insane popularity of "netbooks" and similar low-power computers at the moment (none of which will run Vista due to their low memory and CPU), I think Microsoft will be forced to support XP at least until Windows7 gets released.

what was the fix???

did you upgrade to SP3???

SP3 upgrade is well known to take a perfectly legitimate licence and render it illigal
