View Full Version : Wii USB booting!!

Savage
2nd April 2009, 11:30 PM
Well finally got my Wii booting games from a USB Hard drive..

Very Sweet..
I had info from different sources and the hardest part for me was to downgrade my IOS as no IOS was successful installing...
Got it all working with required file and mini doco...

Screen shots to show.. Looks like SSM won't install being dual layer?, fails at about 16% installing to the HDD..

wait a minute.......you can hook up a hdd to a chipped wii ????
when did this happen?
if its not too hard to do this makes me want to get mine chipped sooner rather than later!

Savage

You can now, or a USB drive,
I;m pretty sure there's a 500GB limit though

Now what would be even better a USB loader channel, at the moment the HomeBrew app runs of a SD card, not really an issue..

I knew there was a reason I kept a backup of all my games on external HDDs. With the PC software to transfer it only takes around 4mins to transfer from external to the Wii FS external.
Much nicer being able to select from a list, loading is faster, plus I haven't found any games that haven't worked so far.

Awesome stuff!
Is it possible to post the links to the mini doco, and whatever else is required please?

Savage

Will upload to somewhere shortly.
One thing is it won't work if you have firmware 3.3 or 3.4 unless you have at least some sort of version of the HomeBrew Channel installed

Now I've got the USB loader as a channel, no need to use the SD Card!!

Just got the Usb loader its awesome you can make channel wads for the games on your Usb so you dont have to keep going through all the apps to open them.

Savage if SSBB isnt installing for you try it again because mine works.

I've had my eye on the ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) port for Wii. The WiiMote is the perfect way to play those old mouse-driven games.

unzip and place the contents as is onto a SD card.

Print out the read me...

And just follow it...
I added in the a -b -c stuff as I had to downgrade mine, which you can tell if in step 4 it fails to install the firmware...

Has also the wad to install it as a channel..

Enjoy!

Oh for me, it was quicker to load, but will have to time..

Do you need the homebrew channel installed for this to work? I thought you couldn't install the HBC with modchips installed?

There's a modified version here too:

http://wiinewz.com/forums/nintendo-news/94929-usb-loader-1-1s-mod-v1-01-by-sorg.html

1) shows list of 21 entries instead 6.
2) more adequate navigating by left and right keys.
3) Doesn't attempt to switch TV mode before load game (uses default TV mode instead). Original loader tries to switch TV mode according to game region which makes PAL games unplayable on TV not supporting PAL modes (NTSC-U/J Wii) and NTSC games on TV not supporting NTSC modes (PAL Wii). Now i can play Mario Kart PAL and Wii Chess PAL on my NTSC-U Wii!

-----------------------------
Update v1.01:

1) added simple version of loader without adding/deleting games and format drive. Useful for children/some pleople.
2) Sorting now is case insensitive.

archive includes:
1) source code with my modifications
2) folder to use in Homebrew Channel (full and simple)
3) Channel version of this loader in WAD format (full and simple).

Yes, HBC is a must,...
I've got a wii key installed, and a few at work have other chips all of which have the HBC.
The Wii has to be modded in some way either chipped or softmodded to accept the HBC..

Will be interesting to see if that non-Twilight hack method gets released soon, as it was promoted as such.

I've been in touch with the Team behind the new Channel Based Exploit for the Nintendo Wii that will let you run unsigned code without the need for the Twilight Princess Exploit which has been squashed by Nintendo in their most recent System Menu update. The video shows the exploit installing the Homebrew Channel.

Brodieman if your using the 1.1 based usb loader your times to install a game are faster and if you use the 1.4 based it takes longer so it sounds like you might be using a 1.4 based.

I wouldn't shorton the Wii's laser lifespan by using it to dump games to external HDD, use a PC. Use one of the multiple MBFS manager programs that are available.
I have an external HDD that I keep all my games on, I then transfer from it to a WBFS formatted external is much shorter timeframe. Yesterday I filled up a 250gb WD Passport with 150+ games in a little over 3 hours

Brodieman
18th April 2009, 01:30 PM
I got it to work guys - i took a deep breath and ventured back into the old days of CLI commands - transfers in 2 minutes.

But now I have a new problem - The loader sees the game - can try to boot it but the wii itself has an issue - saying that I need to "Eject the disc and reboot the system" - im guessing it is because of the dead drive board in the wii. Time to get a new board me thinks :(

Apparently BootMii is due for release in a few weeks.

Direct homebrew/alternate OS boot from SD card. No twilight hack or homebrew channel needed, plus it has the potential to unbrick a Wii. Sounds pretty damned amazing.

Can't seem to find if you can use OS X to set this up

DKong
22nd May 2009, 06:58 PM
Set up is just the same using OS X.
I used the ISO from Homebrew website to install the homebrew channel
I had trouble formatting my drive for WBSF using USB Loader GX, kept getting a stack dump. Tried USB Loader 1.5 and formatted my drive through that then switched back to USB Loader GX and everything works fine:D
Also installed the latest cIOS36_rev10-Installer
Installed the Loader GX channel to load straight from the channel page.
Found a nice App for managing WBFC files on OS X http://www.mediafire.com/?myj4ghomqlz so I can just dump and manage my ISO's straight to the HD from the PPC (Apple)
I like USB Loader GX as it looks the same as the rest of the Wii menus, downloads cover art and simple to use.

I bought a 320GB WD Passport drive ($140.00 from Hardley Normal), looks nice and slick next to the Wii and should hold around or more than 150 games (Can't see myself getting more than that)
Also partitioned the drive into two primary partitions (using windows) a small 4GB FAT32 at the start and rest WBFS.
HD is powered through USB and Wiimote charger is hooked up through other USB port at the same time with no problems so far.

I've followed this guide here (http://blog.staticanime.net/2009/05/26/hacking-the-wii-v20/) to get everything working on my 4.0e Wii but I'm having troubles with the USB loader.

Everytime I've tried to use a USB stick I get a ret =-1 error, which means (I think) the usb device will not work with USB loader. I've used WBFS in both Linux and Windows to format a raw partition but to no avail.

Can anyone recommended a USB stick or Drive that I is compatible with the USB loader? I see Big W has 250G HDs for under $100, will they work?

Apparently there are a few drives that do not work....

I have an external 160Gb seagate from Harvey Norman that works fine.

One small thing though try changing the usb plug around first in the Wii. It did not work for me at first then after swaping to the other USB, my HD worked.

Might be a simple solution :)

OK will give that a go with the swap trick. Will look into the Harvey Norman drive as well. Thanks.

I thought I was the only one up this late.

you will need to install cIOS36 Rev 9 - that will give you USB2

cIOS36 Rev 12 is now out. I am using the this with the latest USB Loader GX Revision and getting no problems.
Use the USB port nearest the the outside of your Wii for your HD.
WD Passport External HD's work well.

You guys make this seem really easy so we may give it a lash - IMO a reliable softmod if far better than any chipmod!

OK, I've had a good look into this and found two websites that prescribe a similar mod but appear to take completely different paths. They are:
http://wiiguide.co.cc/
http://softmod.co.uk

The latter seems to be a bit newer, although seeing as there is an ongoing process of improvement for this softmodding it's hard to be sure of that. Also, the method it precribes is a bit different. Namely, the SD Card can be either FAT16 or FAT32 and that WiiConnect24 should be on AND they specifically instruct you to do an update!

After carefully reading both I am inclined to go with the first site, mainly because that's what everone else here seems to have used successfully, but I'll do a bit more investigating first......

Cheers,
Chris

Got it going on mine, but a bit worried on the first attempt as it froze on the Homebrew Browser then on rebooting it kept coming up with "Not a valid Wii application" when trying to load the browser.

I wiped the SD Card and started again and now it seems to be OK. THe first time it accessed the HB Browser I got a message saying here is a new version available however I did not load it.

By the way, the first attempt the guide and file bundle from http://softmod.co.uk and the second time I used http://wiiguide.co.cc/ so my suggestion to others would be to stick with WiiGuide.

So now that it all seems good I am off to buy an external HDD. I'll probably go to JB Hifi as they have a big range and their prices are always good - they have a 640Gb WD Elements drive for $114 whic is a steal. Maybe I can convince the sales droid to plug one into their demo Wii to make sure it powers off the USB port!!!!

Cool.
I think if you use a HDD over 512GB you have to partition it into two primary partitions as the Loader won't recognise Drives over 512 GB. So for eg with a 640 GB Drive you can have 512GB and 128 GB Partitions , Just make sure you make them both primary when you format it.

OzStick
4th June 2009, 02:28 PM
Just back from JB Hifi and I ended up getting a WD Elements 320Gb Portable drive for $118, because the 640Gb model was external therefore it needed a separate power supply.

Got home, plugged it into the Wii and it fired up, went to the USB Loader which detected the drive, I then formatted it to WBFS which took about 20 seconds!!!

I copied the game in the Wii to the HDD which just happened to be Wii Fit and the 1.47Gb of data took about 7 minutes to copy.

So I'd suggest this HDD to anyone who wants one for their Wii - you can find it HERE (http://www.digitalhome.com.au/Computers_and_IT/Storage/Wd/ELEMENTS_320GB__PORTABLE_HDD/29946)

Now I need to search for a nicer looking USB Loader 'cos the standard one sucks.......

By the way, where are you guys getting all your ISOs from?

Cheers,
Chris

I reckon I had the same thing happen. After re-modding I got the upgrade popup and ignored it and all is OK. For some reson I also have 2 different Backup Loader channels so maybe I needed to Uninstall the version from the first mod attempt as they are obviously different.

I'll check out GX Loader but as my eldest son says, the standard one may look crappy but at least we know it works!

I suppose our next step is to read game reviews and strike up a wish list and go hunting for ISOs.

Either that or if there is anyone in Melb who has done the AND has a lappy, do you want to get together for a coffee and do some swapping?

You initially need your Wii connected to the internet for the covers. Connect24 does not need to be enabled - that just allows the console to perform auto updates.

I modded my nephew's console last week and put together a decent loader channel for them that I'm now using as well :

http://www.sendspace.com/file/6yix41

( 4mb archive )

Unzip and place usb-loader folder on root of SD card. Load the included WAD as a channel using a WAD Manager.

That's it... this'll give you a loader channel that defaults to a 3D GUI.

To load game covers you need to have your console attached to the internets as per above. Once in the GUI - press 1, navigate to Download All Missing Covers option via wiimote d-pad ( Up / Down ) and select using d-pad Right.

Commands within GUI are :

B = Toggle GUI / standard list mode
+ = Install game from disc to HDD
1 = Options ( d-pad Up / Down to scroll , Left to force option , Right to select option )
Home = Reset console
Up / Down = Increase / decrease number of displayed titles. Default is two lines
Left / Right = Scroll left / right through covers.

--- EDIT :

- I've bypassed the Select Device and Game Confirmation stages of the loader for a smoother experience. If you're loading from device other than an HDD - remove the following line from the config file : device = usb.

- Also disabled are Format and Remove Game options ( stops people accidentally destroying all your hard work ). These are easily renabled by changing the following in the config file from 1 to 0 : disable_format , disable_remove.

- Creating your own background screen is easy enough - I've used the Wolf png's as they seem fine to me. Will create my own when I find time.

- There's two sets of covers used by the loader dependant on how your screen is setup in the Wii console options (16:9 or 4:3) - if you change between the two you'll need to download both sets of covers.

- Selecting Left instead of Right at Download all Missing Covers stage will download all covers regardless of whether you've downloaded them previously or not. It will also rename all games back to original title. Out of curiosity I did this the other day and now have 80 odd titles to rename from default... again, when I find the time.

- In the GUI - selecting d-pad Up / Down when at max or min changes scroll functionality. Check it out. I use the 'flow-z 2' style scroll on a 46" LCD.

Enjoy.

Been enjoying all the goodies freely available on the 'net by using the softmod, however I now have an issue with the internal memory being full!

We've tried moving WiiWare titles to SD Card however now whenever we try to access the SD Card (via the icon toward the bottom left of the channel screen) the Wii freezes. I read somewhere that this is a known issue and that installing a patched IOS60 will fix it, but I tried that and it still does the same thing.

I've looked around to see if there is any utility that allows WiiWare games to be loaded from HDD but I am yet to find anything.

Has anyone else struck a similar problem and been able to move games to SD Card or HDD and have them work properly?

Cheers,
Chris

I dont think you can play installed wads from the USB drive yet. - I cant wait till you can do this !!!

You will have to delete games from the Wii's normal memory , then use Wad Manager to install other games into the wii's memory. Its a bit of a stuff around, but thems the breaks !

tidy,
Just used the wii softmodding for dummies thingy
I have 10 original games that i've now backed up onto a verbatim 250 gig ($99 at office works) drive.......they boot MUCH quicker and I can store the games away in a cupboard to save space :-)

best drive deal in the shops at the mo if you can get it is a WD 320 gig drive for $119 at dick smith, otherwise this $99 verbatim is a similarly good deal - 37 cents per gig for the 320 vs 40cents for the 250,

or, put another way, you get 22% more capacity with the 320 gig, but, it costs you 17% more.......pretty much the same really

my 10 games have taken up 16 gig!

the only one that had issues was mario kart but that worked once I rebooted and tried again

Quick question for the experts.

After a while little miss 5 who is currently playing Diego Safari Rescue, has the whole thing freeze on her. Is this the HD disc going to sleep???

Only way to get out of it is to turn the power off at the wall of pull the plug out. On/off on the Wii wont work when it freezes...

Any Ideas???

Secondly if it is the HD going to sleep, I have just bought a WD pocket drive 320GB. How can I transfer the games from one HD to this new one???

Cheers

shabu
15th June 2009, 03:28 PM
I'm not an expert but I'll give it a go...

Can't see the problem being the harddrive going to sleep. Could be a compatibility issue ? The WD Passport 320gb 2.5" drives are definitely compatible.

Use WBFS Manager (PC) 3.0 to format the new drive and copy across the games already on the current drive.

Also - It could be your CIOS. Suggest installing IOS38-64-v3610 13a.

Here's all you should need : Bag'o'tricks for Crafty (http://www.sendspace.com/file/k0nge5).

wbfs.exe is for the WBFS Manager - install on your PC. This'll let you interact with the Wii drive. No more need for DVDs if you have ISOs.

Copy the WAD to the root of your SD card and the folder in Apps to your Apps folder (again, on the SD card).

Using HBC - Execute the Rev13 app and select WAD in the options.

Good luck.

Thanks for the bag of tricks will give it a go over the weekend and swap to the WD 320 GB....

Never forget that the HDDs we're using are portable and therefore very easy to hook up to a PC. So once you've backed up your originals onto the HDD it can be moved to your PC and via WBFS Manager those games can then be backed up to DVD.

Assuming most of us are doing that, we really should formulate a list of games owned by AA members. The intention here should be obvious........

+1 for the WD portable HDDs - I have a 320Gb WDElements HDD that I bought from JB for $118 and it was almost too easy to set up!

If you patched games for use with a dvd backup loader, this tool will unpatch them so they can be used with USB Loaders:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EVMFMMLB

Copy bunpatcher.exe into same directory as the patched disc image.

Open Notepad and type

bunpatcher.exe INPUT.ISO OUTPUT.ISO

INPUT.ISO is the filename of your disc image that is patched on your computer
OUTPUT.ISO is the filename of the new unpatched image

save as
bunpatcher.bat
in the same directory as the bunpatcher.exe and the patched disc image.

Run bunpatcher.bat

Note:
I have no idea who created the program.
I created the tut for the .bat file which alot of you would already know how to do but I find some ppl hate using dos.

EDIT: seems shabu already handled this earlier in the thread

Is this the HD disc going to sleep???

chances are pretty high

Only way to get out of it is to turn the power off at the wall of pull the plug out. On/off on the Wii wont work when it freezes...

does that include holding the power button for around 5 - 10 seconds also? like an atx psu on a pc?

Secondly if it is the HD going to sleep, I have just bought a WD pocket drive 320GB. How can I transfer the games from one HD to this new one???

WBFS Manager 3.01 has a clone function under windows (not used it). Under linux you can use the FUSE WBFS driver/prog to mount the two drives and dump/copy via a perl script(s) i can provide if you like.

My WD Elements(essentials?) 250GB drive is perfect the wii, no sleep/freeze thus far and is currently on sale at DSE for $98

Thx for the reply Sairuk

I have swapped to a WD 320 drive and the problem has gone. So I'm pretty confident it was the HDD going into standby mode.

Also have been fixed up with software to manage the Wii's files, but thanks for the offer...

thats just what i need, the drive i got not to work and to go to sleep (wont the missus be thrilled with the purchase of a 4th external hard drive for yet another reason ... but i was thinking of dumping all my family videos onto a drive just in case).:(

i think i got just on 100 games which Crafty will have soon (i think i have around 30+ you dont have yet Crafty but send me a new list of what you have so i dont get any more doubles).

I'm also still happy to swap discs via post if anyone wants to swap that isn't going to put a HDD on their system. ;)

Hi guys,

I finally got around to acquiring an ISO which I have on the HDD of my PC, so I thought I'd try to copy it to my Wii portable HDD however I'm totally lost!

I've got the WBFS Manager utility and I thought it was a simple matter of telling it where the ISO is and then copying it to the portable HDD, but it seems I am deluded because it just doesn't work that way.

So now I have this ISO and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it onto the Wii HDD. It seems ridiculous that I'd have to burn it to a DVD in order to copy it across and I'm certain there must be a way to do what I want.

How does everyone else get Wii ISOs from their PC to their Wii HDD???

Cheers,
Chris

Have you formatted that HDD to wbfs ?

It should let you in the WBFS manager.

"WBFS Inteligent gui (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6A64RIWD)" - thats not a bad way to get your iso's over. Info here. (http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=149624)

I have the ISO on the main HDD of my PC and I want to then connect my Wii HDD and "drag & drop" to ISO onto the Wii HDD. Is that the way to do it?

I've got both WBFS Intelligent and WBFS Manager and neither of them will browse my PC's HDD. I know I'm doing something wrong........

to check that the drive is formatted connect it to the Wii and open the USB loader if the drive is not formatted it will to it for you.

in WBFS Manager select the drive letter of the USB drive and click load.
on the right side of the screen click browse and select the folder where the ISO is located.

then click copy.

Thanks Emo, I managed to get it working - no idea what I was trying to do before though!

It took a few attempts to copy the ISO across as my PC kept "undetecting" the portable HDD so maybe it doesn't power up properly off the USB port I was trying to use.

All appears OK though. Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Another question for all you Wii gurus out there:

Can we play NTSC games on our softmodded Wiis???

My household is quite partal to baseball and a few other titles that are rare to PAL, so if I manage to acquire and titles on HTSC are they playable on a PAL Wii?

If so then I will begin with said acquisitions............

There are a whole bunch of Wii programs out there and the list grows daily as more and more people get involved and understand the whole homebrew, USB HDD, etc etc aspect of the Wii...

It would be a full time job to be an expert at the moment with the pace of change.

PS whilst I'm here in this thread, my offer stands for HDD swap's for any AA members, send me your external HDD and it will be returned Express post heavier. PM for more details.

Most definately... Some BIG words of advice though: NEVER, under ANY circumstances, update your WII from a game that is meant for the NTSC region. It WILL brick your wii.

Now that I've said that, you can remove the update from any .iso file by using 'WiiBrickBlocker' (Google it) before you copy it across :-)

Edit: for those interested, I use CoverFloader - YouTube - CoverFloader Demo (RC6) - and the best part is, the kids don't even need to be able to read (and there is parental controls!)

Where are you pulling your cover images from for CF? Manually from wiiboxart, did you donate or elsewhere?

I use usbloaddergx simply because the cover packs are more easily accessibly atm, no passwords etc.

The problem is that when the Wii goes into "Gamecube Mode" it emulates the gamecube and turns off all of the Wii features including USB.
This is also why no one has yet been able to run PSX games off of a HDD on a PS2 as it does the same thing.
Hopefully something will be done, but considering the PS2 still hasn't been done even though it been around for almost a decade, even Magic Gate has been cracked on it.

Finally got it working!
Wii sports resort does not load tho. Comes up with error.

The first solution I was given for how to get this game to boot was to get a HBC app called USB-LOADER GX. Install the Wii sport Resort game with WBFS. WBFS manager is the way I transfer Wii games onto my HDD. Assuming that you have a copy of Wii sports Resort ISO on you computer, get the Program WiiScrubber. Open up that program and extract the ISO a data file called "player.dol"

Now that you have player.dol file, rename it to RZTP01.dol.
Now create a folder called USBLoader GX on the root of you SD memory card.
Then copy RZTP01.dol file into that folder.

GO into Homebrew channel and load USBLoader GX. Then change the setting to 002 Fix "ON", Altdol "ON" and make sure Altdol is set to "SD".
After you have these setting, run the Wii Sports Resort Iso from you HDD.
It will play the Wii Motion Plus Video tutorial and you will have to watch the whole thing otherwise you will get a Black Screen Error1 if you try to run this game. After you watch the entire video the machine will reset. Now load USBLoader GX again and Choose AltDOL "OFF", because you don't need to see that video again. after you do this run the game. If the game don't start, it's because you don't have the new cIOS. You need to be on REV13.

I didn't choose to do it this way because it was way too many steps.

TBH there is so much on there that its impossible to get through them, so you stick with your favourites and you have to wade through some pretty crap games.

I must admit that one of the more fun games on there is "Just Dance" I travelled to Sydney for XMAS to catch up with family and the entire bloody family were all up dancing, whether they had a wiimote in hand or not.....granted we all belong in the loony bin but it's still a pretty fun game, so is DJ Hero, though you need the turn-table.

Rather than a channel install a forwarder channel it makes updating the USB loader a hell of a lot easier.

As for copying it across WBFS manager is good, but if you are doing a HD to HD transfer use WBFS Gui it doesn't transfer to the computer first and does direct 1 to 1 copying make life a little easier and a lot faster

Due to the way USB works, USB to USB data transfers are slow as buggery unless you have a split bus setup (i.e. don't have both USB HDDs on to the same USB hub).

USB->SATA, then SATA->USB is actually much faster, except when copying something like a 4.3GB disk image, you are adding an extra Read and Write cyclce, negating the advantage.

Ignoring SATA->SATA I would think that the best speed would be achieved with USB->PC(A)->Gb Eth->PC(B)->USB. That could potentially run pretty much flat knacker at ~100MB/s

Whichever way you do it, 500GB is a long time waiting!!

Yes that what has been done.
a forwarder channel ...

Now I've been told that it's possible to also format the drive as FAT32. And have the files in a certain directory to work as apposed to WBFS, anyone tried?

Update, found some guides, hmmm not sure if worth the hassle.

One thing to remember if you do it this way you wont be able to copy games directly via your wii. You would need to keep a small partition of WBFS for this purpose.

Seems a pain just for the luxury of copy and paste. There is also a WBFS windows driver as well.

I have a 50GB fat32 partition on mine so I can watch movies and store music and roms on there too. 50GB was probably more than I needed for that, but hey its a 1tb drive

Ignoring SATA->SATA I would think that the best speed would be achieved with USB->PC(A)->Gb Eth->PC(B)->USB. That could potentially run pretty much flat knacker at ~100MB/s

Whichever way you do it, 500GB is a long time waiting!!

Having a seperate USB2 card and the built in one one the m/b (USB2) - I should be right then? (Only got one drive - can't really test it :redface)

EDIT: Wouldn't it be quicker to just rip the hard drive as a raw image - then copy it onto the second drive? (Ignoring all the WBFS crap all together?) Can you even do that?

From my experience copying wii USB external disks of 1 tb in size USB to USB is faster. Or at least wbfsgui is faster than wbfsgui manager.

if you want the fastest possible speeds, then having them on internal hdd transferring to external is best option, that's if you have the room on your pc for them of course. I noticed that it dropped my transfer times by around 8 hrs, was taking 10 hrs to transfer usb to usb, when I changed my setup, now takes a little under 2 hrs to do so
