I've just decided to make a go at completing Wonderboy. The last time I had a reasonable go on WB was in one of the MGLs and so within a few games got back to form just then with 650k or so on level 5-2. I think the game goes up to level 7-4 so there's still a long way to go.

I know Amy's going to start work on this mission too so thought I'd throw out the challenge to fellow MGL-ers.

Anyone keen? Anyone finished it? This is a one credit finish as well.

C'mon guys get to it and post where you're at! :)

No chance. I'm happy (like, seriously impressed) if I beat the first boss on one credit.

I'm ok at building machines, I suck at playing on them. :lol

Amy, Monsterland is the sequel and you know you should be playing them in the right order :p

Wonderboy Set 1 I think are the roms I'm using.

Think I might go and have a bash at it right now.....

If it's Monster Land i can 1CC that. I play though it at least once a week.....one of the best arcade games ever made!!!! I'll challenge you guys on score for that one...but if you can't beat it then you have no chance because you get something like 5x what your score is for beating the dragon at the end. :)

But the first post tells me it's not :) I'm pretty good at both of those games, and i have to say that wonderboy 1 would be around 45x harder to 1cc than Monster Land :) If any of you guys manage to do it...that would impress me :) If you manage to do it any get to level 8.... and then pass it......you are godlike?

yeah Monsterland is a great game too. I haven't played it in ages or at least since it was a game in the MGL. I can finish it but not sure what my high score would be. I got 1.3M when it was in the MGL - not sure if that's any good though... what's a god score to finish the game? What's your high? Maybe I'll get back to that one later after WB.
Here's a link to the high scores page....

what are the dolls and letters for???

what are the dolls and letters for???

the dolls basically double your bonus at the end of every stage. I'm not sure if there's anything more to it than that.
There is a hidden letter on each stage. They start at 1000 pts then 2000 then 3000 and then an extra man. Well worth collecting them.

The dolls in WB1 you have to collect every single one (1 per level) and when you pass level 7-4 you go onto the real last world. World 8-1 to 8-4.

I'm not 100% sure on the scores on WB2, i'll fire it up later and play through and see what i get.

Occassionally I see mini-wonderboys pop up (extra lives). Is there any patern to whether and where they appear?

stu
1st January 2009, 05:51 PM
Not sure on the extra lives thing, but as for the dolls, some of them you have to do things like run into particular rocks or even fire to make them appear. Which is kinda shit, but makes getting to world 8 all the more godlike.

Are you guys talking 1CC G'N'G??

Are you guys talking 1CC G'N'G??

I wish!!! I can get to the end easy on a credit or even first life but then that's when the "fun" starts.

At the end of the 6th stage (top of the castle) there's 2 red demons you must kill to move on to the final battle with Lucifer. I have beaten the red demons but I had a dagger as a weapon and the game sends you back to the bottom of the castle if you don't have the shield/crucifix weapon.
If you do have the crucifix/shield weapon and then defeat Lucifer, a message comes up saying something like that the journey was just an illusion so sends you back to the very first stage to start over. Finish it on the 2 nd trip through and the game ends. Amy has done this :sm1:

I would think impossible for any person to even imagine finishing the complete game on one credit.

"Ghouls" the sequel is a lot easier and would be conceivable for someone to do on one credit. Ryan (LOTR4U) and I both finished Ghouls the other day but used quite a few credits.

BTW, I know what 1CC means, but what do the "CC" stand for?

Exactly just jump at the right place or throw a hammer and the letters and bonuses appear, I've a lot of time for wonderboy one of the best, if not the best sidewise scrolling platform ever, it really has depth of gameplay.

1CC = 1 Credit Clock

I think?

That's impressive Amy finishing the second loop, that was my next question....did you go through it twice but already answered. VERY NICE!

There's a wonderboy FAQ on gamefaqs that tells you where all the dolls are.

I am a wonderboy virgin. I am going to have a go it on my mame machine tonight. I will see how I go and Report back in a couple of days.
Cheers,
Ian
PS. I know a guy who has a wonderboy PCB but he wants $200 ish for it. I have seen them go on ebay for heaps as well. Are the PCBs rare or just popular like galaga etc?

dmworking247
8th January 2009, 08:36 PM
Rare and popular I'd say.

I couldn't part with more than $100 though for pretty much anything but a still-sited game (like Bowling, Buck Hunters, etc).

I didn't get a chance to play it since I was last posting on this thread until tonight.

I just got 689k which I think is my highest and finished up on Level 5 Round 2 - I think the furthest I've been is (Level 5) Round 3 or 4.

It is really tough on level 5 so it makes me wonder how it will be on level 7 :o

Anyone else had a chance to play?? Amy, stop hiding....come out and reveal :D

*Edit - just checked my score when we played it in the MGL3 and I only got 685k so 689k is my highest.

I did have intentions on finishing Wonderboy back when I started this thread but I think I only had a couple of games on it and then threw the towel in. Anyway, now because almost everything in my gamesroom doesn't work anymore (barfridge still good though ;) )I am now determined to finish my business....

I played it a couple of times over the past few weeks to get back in the swing of things and have since pushed a bit further into it. I decided 2 weeks ago that I'd have a game every day so I could keep progressing but the end result is that I only played it 3 times over that period.

I had a game this arvo and got 830k and round 6-3 so stages are very tough for me because I am seeing them all for the first time. I thought the final stage was 7-4 but read in a thread here that if you collect all the dolls and finish 7-4, it gives you another stage up to 8-4 DAMN IT!!!!

It's a tough game mainly because you have to go through so much shit just to get up to the hard stages. Just for me to have a game is prob at least 45 mins or so I'd guess.

I think Amy's hs score was just over the 1M so that is my first goal.

Anyway, I'm going to push on a see what happens :D

The hardest thing is how long the game is. I can't imagine why they made games so long that were for commercial use. My last game I sat down with a drink and quickly got other drinks between stages. By the time the game was finished I was really pissed and having a great time!

On 7-2 there is a very nasty couple of clouds to get past, good luck getting past them!
