The nanao tri-res would be absolutely brilliant if you could get your hands on one. Failing that, highway have got a bunch of Wei-Ya's for sale atm but they are 29". The Wei-Ya's are also triple sync but i do believe they can go even higher than 32Khz.

Only trouble is that A. they are massive and B. they are pretty expensive. Every single nanao that i have seen has blown me away. If you've got a good tube and a Nanao chasis, then you cant go wrong.

AFAIK, the 26" Nanao were only either 15Khz or 15/24khz. Jomac would be the man to ask though.

Building from scratch, I'd go with a TV screen so much cheaper. Or if you wanted a jamma cabinet you could use one of these http://www.highway.net.au/parts/converters/1865.html

For an idea on a cabinet how about something like this? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/38-inch-cabinet-project-for-MAME_W0QQitemZ190005904134QQihZ009QQcategoryZ3945Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

windows runs OK on a TV. If you have video out on your PC (most video cards have TV out) why don't you try it out and see if that's the way you want to go. If you don't have TV out maybe try a mates PC. My personal choice would be 68cm TV. I run a TV in my driving cabinet and it works very well.

Rock,

I originally brought a 51cm TV with s-vid for my mame cab... Windows was unreadable but the text on Mamewah was ok. After half an hour of playing games thou my eyes were like piss holes in the snow & were fuked... hence I brought a 21 inch secondhand monitor & never looked back.

There must of been something wrong with your setup, my text is clear in windows and I don't get any sore eyes from playing (my TV sits behind tinted glass). The secondhand monitor that you refer to, is it a PC monitor? My TV MAME (for driving cabinet) setup produces a very similar quality picture to my arcade monitor MAME setup (for everything else). If I had to choose between the two setups for reading text in windows, the TV is best, but neither is anywhere as good as a PC monitor.

This subject can be a real Pandora's box, but in a nutshell WINDOWS WILL LOOK ORDINARY WITH AN ARCADE MONITOR!!!!!!

Put simply, an arcade monitor, just like a TV, is designed to run at a MUCH lower resolution than a PC monitor, so even at 640 x 480 there is no guarantee that it will look "good".

They have a much higher dot pitch (their pixels are bigger) so the effect you can end up with is similar to viewing a small picture on your PC at 200% or more of its original size - the original is being modified so far from its 'standard' format that can't possibly look great. This is probably not the best example as the situation is in reverse, but hopefully it makes sense.

As far as TVs are concerned my standard response is that they are all different, so unfortunately you won't really know for sure until you try it. What you can count on for certain is SOME loss of quality - after all, you are using MAME to emulate the game which converts it to run on a PC monitor, and you are then converting it again via TV-Out of your video card to a TV. So elements such as the capability of the video card, drivers and quality of S-Video connectors and cables come into play as well!

There's a couple of monitor comparisons available on the 'net that show how the output can differ depending on the hardware used, which may or may not help you make a decision. You'll find them here:
http://www.oscarcontrols.com/monitors.shtml
http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/avga2.html

In addition, BYOAC have some really good info on monitors at:
http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade_monitors.shtml

Personally, with the current "Death to CRTs" campaign that is being waged lately the price of large (ie 19" and 21") 2nd hand PC monitors has dropped to a point where they are now a viable alternative. The advantages offered are obvious so I won't mention them.......

I hope you're able to get some useful info out of all this!

Cheers,
Chris

I won that ebay bid and plan on using this cab as my 4 player mame and plan on using a 68cm TV in there and if words are readable in mamewah that would be great.
Would one just use a normal tv out card? or are there other hardware out there..
thanks guys

How's your progress on the monitor search rock?

Sounds like you and I are looking for the same thing in monitors. So far I have found:
http://www.zax.com.au/amusementmachines.html
http://www.highway.net.au/parts/monitor_&_chassis.html

and a review of 2 brands:
http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/betson.html - my preference if one could be found in Australia (link: http://www.kortek.co.kr/new/english/product/product_view.asp?idx=4&pnum=p01)
http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/d9200-1.html - see higway.net link above.

I would love the Kortek in tandem with the Arcade/VGA card from Ozstick, but if only the Wells-Gardner is abvailable here then it will do. Just about ready to commit to one but am waiting on info regarding Aussie distributors on Kortek.

Share any new info you have or pics if you have already got one...

On the subject of running televisons off your pc here is some info

http://www.ultimarc.com/monfaq.html#monitorcable
http://arcadecontrols.com/files/Miscellaneous/crtfaq.htm#crtcsa
http://www.mameworld.net/pc2jamma/monitors.html
http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/scart.htm

From the reading have i have done, if you plan to run a tv of your pc, run the tv on scart plug and feed it from the stardard video out 15 d connection.

(long and short of it) If you feed a tv the signal from a svideo out plug, the video card pushes/pulls/squeezes the video in to something recognisable and does not do a very good job of it

Clear as mud??:unsure
Good :)
