View Full Version : Arcade Game Location Database!

COPIED FROM OLD FORUMS...

Personally i know that i see alot of arcade machines on the web that i want to be able to play locally. Alot of these machines are either too big or too expensive for alot of poeple to have in their homes. Thats is why i was thinking of keeping some sort of database of local arcades and arcade games, so people could look here for their favorite games and know where to find them.

I know that this might be difficult due to the speed at which some operators remove machines, and the lack of fixed locations these days, but i figured that it wouldnt hurt to try anyway.

So here's the idea, how about we get a list of arcades available in various locations and some of the bigger machines / obscure / whatever machines that they have. People can also request certain games and if a memeber has info on where one is, then please post.

Here Goes...

i will be going to maroochydore in the next couple of weeks and most probably the gold coast again. so i will get pics (maybe) but will definitely update the gold coast one on caval, cause that place is gigantic and i can't remember everything there.

Adeptus, you're missing out, those mech machines are sweet. they're like 3m long x 1.5m wide x 2m high. they don't move but it's like sitting in the mech. there's working radar screens, normal view screen, graph screens with health etc, like 4 joysticks and a throttle / thrust lever beside the seat. it's insane. the guy that set us up reckons he's been playing for ages and he still can't use the mech to it's full ability.

Didn't see this thread until just now. I have a few games up and running at the moment. They are:

1] Street Fighter III 3rd Strike - VS City [head-to-head cabinet]
2] Super Street Fighter II Turbo - VS City [head-to-head cabinet]
3] King Of Fighters XI - Astro City 2

ALL cabinets have brand new SANWA sticks and buttons on them.

Some other decent arcades in Sydney and notable games:

1] Galaxy World - George St [KOF XI, Samurai Shodown 6, T5, SFII WW, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum]
2] Galaxy World - Haymarket Market City [SF3:3s on a crap cabinet, T5, KOF 02 and some others]
3] Timezone - Chatswood Westfields [SF3:3s, KOF's, T5 and a few others]
4] Timezone - Castle Hill Shopping Centre [SF3:3s, T5 on crap cabinets]
5] Laser 190 - Burwood Road, Burwood [SFA3, SF Ex 2, T5, KOF 98, KOF 02, KOF Neowave, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum and more]

Most of those arcades I listed have some good games but their cabinets and sticks really affect the quality of play and in general make the game not as fun. Also, many of the Uni's around Sydney [and Melb etc] have pretty good arcades. Sydney Uni has a great selection of Japanese cabinets and games so does Maquarie Uni and UNSW.

In Brisbane the best arcade they have is called "Replay" cant remember the exact location. Melbourne CBD has alot of arcades around the Chinatown section - I think 3 to be exact with tons of 3s and KOF to be played... it's like going to HK! In summary Melbourne Chinatown area has the best bunch of arcades remaining in Australia full of Japanese cabinets, excellent players and great games.

I'm guessing he means Brisbane City (142 Albert Street - near the corner of Albert and Elizabeth).

Last time I was in there they had a heap of Astro Cities up the back running newer fighters - Tekken5, MvC2, NeoGeo Battle Colloseum, SF3:3S, SvC:Chaos, and others I forget. Tekken5 gets a LOT of play, and the players are pretty friendly.

There's also a DDR machine, Ghost Squad, and 4 daytona units on big rear projections. And I'm probably missing heaps.

I keep forgetting to take a camera with me when I go there to document it all.

[EDIT]

I was in Indooroopilly Westfield yesterday, but forgot to take some photos on my mate's phone camera. Nothing special however. Identical to the description above, except with some additional Initial D 2 and 3 setups, and a Virtua-Cop 2 dual screener. Plenty of "Vs City" cabs for fighter fans. There was a Soul Calibur III there too, along with the usual fighting fare.

Most larger shopping centers have small arcades or a few machines near the movies ect..

I`m fairly sure there are still arcades at :-

The hyperdome, Brownsplains shoping center, Towong and carandale.

I just did some xmas shoping today in the city and decided to pop into replay and take a look around...

This is a new games by the looks of it, "Cobra the Arcade Game" - A gun game by namco, i didnt have the cash to play it but it looks like the gun has a lock-on system that fires a laser at the targets on screen. Almost like how the laser lock-on works in the panzer dragoon games...

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20001.jpg

Cobra was also a wide screen game, this cab was for four players.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20002.jpg

Next up was a new Maximum Tune 2 machine. I didnt really see anyone play this while i was there, but then again it was 9:30 am on a monday morning. Nice graphics, good sound system. The gameplay is pretty similar to Shotaku Battle (Tokyo Highway Battle). Game features the usual suspects... GTR etc.
(note the inital d-3 machine besides it)

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20003.jpg

Para Para Paradise, -nuff said. You can see some idiot in the reflection taking a picture too, man i hate tourists!!!

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20004.jpg

Sega Ghost Squad DX machine, Ian took a bunch of pictures of the ones on the Coast. Looks pretty good. VC3 style graphics, in a Tom Clancy style of setting.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20006.jpg

"Beat Manix II DX 10th Style" yet another music game. Controlls look a bit intimidating for the un-initiated, but stilll a very a cool machine.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20007.jpg

Holy Shit Batman!!! its a retro-cade machine!!! Know, i didnt think that this was legal but oh-well. Basically an X-in-1 machine setup on a nice big 33" cab. Notice that there is another idiot tourist taking a picture of this!!! damn flash.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20008.jpg

It seems that alot of developers are trying to cash in on the whole initial D thing. Here is yet another attempt. Wangan Midnight R, also in the same vein as Tokyo Highway Battle.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20009.jpg

Replay had a good selection of 2d and 3d fighters as well. Here you can see the older style versus city cabs. One on the left with Neo-Geo Battle Colloseum, Middle was King of Fighters XI and on the end was a Lurvley sega Naomi with Capcom vs SNK 2, (the jap version!!!!!).

Behind this set of machines was also another 3 versus city cabs, featuring tekken and some others. I was a bit peeved with the joysticks on the versus city cabs - an MCA with crappy buttons. It would have been cool to have the seimitsu "outies" and sanwa sticks though.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20010.jpg

While im on the subject too, Neo Geo Battle coluseum was a bit naf, so too was king of fighters xi. But it still is good to see local ops still supporting 2d fighters. I look foward to seeing if they get in the metal slug game and fist of the north star fighter.

----

Drum Mania V machine, many ppl were playing it when i was there.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20011.jpg

Here is a line-up of the 50" machine that they've got there. The one of the left was had a toasted screen though. I beleive that it was Tekken 4, so now big loss :) . In the middle there was the very popular Street Fighter 3 Third Strike machine, -much loved by all patrons, as can be seen by the thick layers of dead scin around the joysticks!!!

On the far right, just out of screen was a large 33" King of Fighters 2003 machine. and too the far left was a bowling game.

Also of interest was a breeders cup game and a merit touchscreen system (set up in a namco exceleena) to the left of this picture.

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20012.jpg

-----------------

This was where i stopped taking pictures because i think that the operator was going to confront me, so i left with my bounty!!! Anyway, of ineterest there was a naomi universal cab with Zombie Revenge, a Megalo 410 with Virtua Tennis and some other cabs with various older games, incl Raiden 2!!!.

There were like 8 or 10 daytona machine too in this one location. Man this game must have made some money in its time!! There was also the obligitory DDR machines, but this time there wasnt any fat middle aged white dudes playing it by themselves -instead was a pair of goth chics

Overall pretty cool arcade, just wish there was more of em'

------------------

I was just finishing the last of my christmas shopping when i decided to take a short-cut through the Elizabeth street arcade; shopping arcade that is folks. To my surprise there was a shop set up with just those coin-operated photo-boths; 3 of them infact.

I went in and asked the girl working there if i could take some pics and she was cool with it. She said that they had been there for about three weeks. The arcade that it is set up in has got alot of great Asian take-aways and seems to have alot of Asian-focused shops. I hope that they do well in their area.

The shop that it was in was a real trip, some of the most psychadelic wall paper i have ever seen.

Anyway, here are the pics...

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20013.jpg

These machines were massive too!!! about half as long as a family sedan and pretty high.

Here is a picture of the front of the store...
(note the awesome wallpaper)

http://www.cowboyberty.com/arc%20014.jpg

The girl working there was real nice and wanted to know about the website. If your into this sorta stuff then you should drop in. Its in the arcade where the piercing shop is, just down from Skinnies records.

That seems to be the trend these days. Cabinets ship with default joysticks, and when they break they are replaced with crappy MCAs due to their longer lifespan and lower cost.

While I sympathise that the arcade industry is not the goldmine it once was, some nice control hardware wouldn't go astray.

nope, it acutally runs on the Chihiro, same board as Outrun 2, Virtua Cop3 and House of the Dead 3, to name but a few. The chihiro still does use a gdrom drive though, and the gdrom rom drive from the naomi will work perfectly well with the chihiro.

Here's a pic.

Oh yeah, a replcacement Chihiro board is around $6000USD from Suzo. :x

For that price you can buy an outrun 2 SP DX machine,... mmmmm outrun 2.

Ah, my ignorance shines again! I didn't realise there were systems outside of Naomi that run GD-ROM drives. :redface

US$6K! I'm amazed that there are still arcades in operation with those sorts of costs for single boards.

[edit] Well bugger me if it's not a cut back PC in a box:
http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=729

It seems x86 is becoming more and more popular in arcades. I'm only just learning about all the old 386 based games, and seeing the Lindbergh appear a while back. I guess the CPUs are cheap and readily available en masse, and scale nicely for all this 3D business the kids seem to want these days.

Berty
13th December 2005, 10:11 AM
The chihiro is justa beefed up xbox, which was a pc in a box too. There's also the Taito Type-X which is just a pc configuration. (celeron and nvidia)

I think the whole x86 thing is just a cost cutting thing for the industry. Plus ppl dont really need any special hardware knowledge to program for these systems, -well in comparision to the older RISC systems at least.

Although you still see the use of Hitachi's Super Risc Engine (SH) processors being used as well as the venreble 68000.

I see now that Renesas (who bought the SuperH technology) primarily aim their hardware at the automotive industry. They've converted the old Naomi/Dreamcast SH-4 200MHz unit into a 400MHz unit, and even squished the PowerVR video hardware onto the same core. It's basically a Naomi-on-chip!

Rumours abound of a Dreamcast re-release or "handheld Dreamcast" appearing, but to be honest I don't see it happening (as much as I'd love it to). Still, pretty neat that cars will soon be Dreamcast powered. :)

why are they closing down? dodgy location? looks like a bit of fun.

COPIED FROM OLD FORUMS...
I know that this might be difficult due to the speed at which some operators remove machines, and the lack of fixed locations these days, but i figured that it wouldnt hurt to try anyway.[/I]

just went back and read this. after updating my list of arcade games and where they are etc a few times (way back on the 1st page) it seems quite the opposite of what you originally thought.

it seems that most arcades like the replay's in westfields just don't update much at all. it is pretty weak, they seem to change a pinball or get a new game in about once every 4 months give or take a month or 2. is it any wonder arcades are not as popular as they used to be (i know everyone has consoles but this isn't helping their situation). you've got to spend money to make money!

anyway, this is why i recommend people go pay a visit to the timezone on the gold coast (one of the few left around brisbane). that place is always updated with the latest stuff and loads of it., and there's always a heap of people in there all days of the week and at all hours proving that spending the money is worthwhile.

That guy's made a lot of portable consoles. What he mentions a little less fequently is just how much it costs him to do so, even many years after the technology is considered "dead".

Unfortunately products need to make money for the parent companies to survive. I'm sure all of us here would be pretty bobsmacked to learn the sheer volume of console stuff that's never hit the market and only ever lived inside R&D labs.

Anyways... sliding off topic!

Original POST by busboy

Where to play in SA!
Thought it would be handy to start a list of Pinny's around Adelaide that people have found. As its getting harder and harder!

Here is a start-

Bowland Salisbury-
1) Rollercoaster tycoon - left flipper bit weak though.
2) Gilligan's Island - fun to play!
3) Star wars- Episode 1.- Interesting!

Bowland Elizabeth-
1) Addam's Family- average cond, but plays ok.
2) Twilight Zone - poor cond. but plays ok.

I know there was 3 pinnys in Australian pizza house on Hindley Street a while ago, if someone can help out. One was a newish Playboy.

Anyways, over to you guys!

Ok, Game Zone, Toombul Shopping Centre, Brisbane Northside

Your usual skill testers, half a dozen driving simulators, and some other stuff.

Wasn't really paying attention to that stuff, I was eyeing off the 3 pinballs on the other side of the room

Indiana Jones
Creature
Twilight Zone

The indi only took tokens and I'd played it before. This ones display was missing parts of it, so I left it alone.

Had two games on the Creature, it wasn't level, big run to my right made it hard to get some shots away and some of the display wasn't working. Overall I thought the playfield was too crowded, sometimes I had no Idea where the ball had gone.

TZ. First time I'd played this game, and after all the talk here I had high expectations. $1 coin 1 play, $2 coin 3 plays. Apart from not being level (small run to my left) I liked it. The more I found out about the rule set the more interesting it got. Picked up a couple of multiballs that turned up the heat a bit. Scored 594,000,000 on my 3rd game and got a credit. Next game was about a third less. Overall condition looked ok to me (Noob eyes) small crack in the clock?

Anyway looking forward to the banking next week:evil

Just a note to the person who posted about the melbourne arcades....the china town ones.

I used to play here all the time. There is ALOT of really good fighter players there. There used to be 3 arcades there, now there is only 2 as one of them got shut down due to all the drug trading that was going on there. They had like 40 astro city machines all along the walls with every fighting game on them, used to be pretty cool BUT it was MEGA SHADY....i'm talkin, make eye contact with people in there and the next thing you have a bunch of people trying to sell you drugs....it was crazy.

The two that are left there now, i don't see as many shady people around as i used to, but there was a big police crackdown on those sort of happenings in the area. It's mainly asian -25YO players there, lots of school kids, when i say lots i mean 100% and like i said earlier alot of them are really good players. The place is let down hugely by the quality of the machines, the sticks on at least 75% of the machines are f'd and i mean totally f'd to the point that you really have to force them to get them to register sometimes..it's really a shame because they have such good games and alot of machines there. All they need to do is just buy some new sticks dammit.

Both places are a little sketchy though, not in an unsafe way..i mean just sort of like some guys backyard hacky arcade. If they cleaned the place up a bit , maybe painted the walls and tried to do it up a little it would make a HUGE difference.

There is also some arcade games at RMIT in the city, near the student food CAFE, last time i went there (about 2 years ago) they had custom made machines, SF3, MVC2, KOF2002, 2003, all the good fighters, daytona, virtua tennis, plus some old neo games, puzzle bobble etc...bout 15 machines.
i remember the CP on the machines was made out of some heavy duty ass metal, super solid...pity about the homo sticks they had on the machines...hehe

anyways thats about it for my local area

OK after having missed the Adelaide Night :cry whilst having a relaxing holiday in Surfers I checked out some pinnies whilst I was there to console myself..

TZ in Surfers only has 2 pinnies in less than ideal condition but I still hammered away on them.
Circus Voltaire and Tales of the Arabian Nights..
What was really kick arse was House of the Dead 4....
so many of the other games were so so yet there was a lot to chose from.

I am 50 50 about their card system for credits. For $25 i got 2 hours unlimited game play on most of their machines including the ticket redemption games for the kiddies (At this point I think i need to state that those redemption machines are F%^& rigged) the kids dont mind but they are slow, dont pay out correctly, and constantly get jammed...Enough Said. Ultimately I had more than my monies worth so cant complain too much.

Other pinnies located close were downstairs in the Ripleys Museum across Cavill Mall. Free entry to the games room where there was 3 pinnies. A No Fear, A Ripley's Believe It Or Not Machine and one other which I forget. All in good condition and played well.

Lastly where the family stayed at Broadbeach on the beach was captn Hook (see photo) Spent far too much playing this morning and night....

Still It was fun though...

Both Dreamworld and Movieworld also had pinnies to play but after just paying to get in I could not waste the time to explore further. The rides were too much fun....

Three general observations about things (nothing specific to any of the retailers mentioned in this thread).

We all want everything as cheap as possible. This means lower margins per item sold - margins that equate to more staff, more knowledgable staff who are paid more etc.
It sure as hell shits me when I have to wait for someone else to be served first. But when I am being served, I'll take as much time as I need to get what I want with advice from the retailer or whatever. And the impatient bastard behind me can go to hell - it's *my* turn now ;)
Bells on counters are always good things. Don't pester me when I come in and look around. Let me ring the bell when I'm ready to be served.

Just a heads-up. Timezone in Surfers Paradise has expanded greatly. It has no occupied the old Howl at the Moon bar and extends from one side of the old paradise centre to the other, (mall). A total of 6 new Sega Afterburners where counted, (looks darn fine to, but the price was a triple take). No pinballs thought except one. Apparently Juan, (part owner) doesn't think to much of pinballs.

Hi all,

Was up Timezone in Surfers today and guess what? They finally listened to me (probably not, [I kept hassle them to buy some pinnys]) and got a new pinny.

yaaaaaaaaaay Family Guy it is. Looks great, didn't have time to play but the mini playfield looked awesome, more like a mini pinball than a mini playfield. I like the what Pat Lawlor did on it.

I was at Timezone today with the kids. Finally tracked down Family Guy and had a game. Ended having 4 games off the the one credit. Stewie pinball was great fun, multiball even better.

Gave the last two credits to my 8 year son. It was his first go on a real pinball (Yea I know I've been depriving him) and he did pretty well, even got a couple of goes at Stewie Pinball. :)

Coolangatta Cinema. Thought I'd just make a comment about two machine there.

1. Frankenstein pinny. Fun to play but maintenance = zero. The Flipper rubbers were worn completely through, almost in half. But did they get replaced, nooooo, they just got turned around so the worn out bit was facing me!

2. Sega twin racer of some kind, just crap, watched some kids play - one side wouldn't coin up, the other had no sound, rubber on the steering wheel worn through down to the metal and the force feedback was going ape shit

Soz to anyone if these machines are already listed in this discussion.

Brisbane city: Replay - House of the Dead 4 (deluxe), Elvis pinball, Lord of the rings pinball, Raiden II (big screen), Let's go Jungle (big ass sitdown cabinet, which is about the same size as a small car), DDR Supernova.

Indropilly shopping centre: Funhouse- Virtua Cop 2 (last time I was on their site this machine was for sale for about $3500, I'm guessing it hasn't been sold yet coz it's still in the arcade but I'm not sure. It is a 50" cabinet.), Outrun 2006 twin, Southpark pinball, DDR (old version I think 8th mix or something), House of the Dead 2, Ghost Squad, Afterburner Climax (a motion cabinet, very nice).

Chermside shopping centre: Replay- Thrill drive twin (2x 50" cabinets, steering is shocking, force feedback stuffed, monitors are off colour), Metal Slug 5 (large screen cabinet), Soul Callibur II, Crisis Zone, Star Wars Episode 1 pinball(the only other one of these I have seen in running order is in Melbourne).

There is also Tops at the top level of the Myer center which is on the other side of the cinemas, the bottom level is a small arcade and there are pool tables on the top level.

All the locations I've listed also have at least 2 Daytona machines, either 50" or twin cabinets.

I wanted to get some of those way back before I had a mortgage, but it was just too much hard work. Been thinking about building a pair and just running mechwarrior in it (as that about all the new ones do these days) but I've heard the latest versions don't even run red planet anymore and I can't find a reasonable substitute.

But Space is an issue anyway, hmmm an old local supermarket closed down a while ago...I think that store is still vacant...... :lol

I drove my kids all the way to Canberra today.

I found an Intencity in Belconnen shopping centre, and my kids (6 and 4) got really excited so I took them in hoping to give them a go of a 'real' pinball (they love pinball on the MAME cab etc).

One Football oriented pin, and one Space Jam... both faulty... not happy. Tried the skeet ball, faulty... tried to put them on two racing games, 1 or the 2 on both were faulty... Grrr.

So I took the kids to the National Dionsaur Museum, they had about 8 arcade games and a Flinstones, Jurassic Park 1, and a Jurrassic Park 2?? pin (3 total). Guess what? All faulty.

600km and no pinball for my kids.

When I see this shit now I ask if the pins/arcade machines are owned by the site (they werent), and if they are I say "clearly they're not making you much money if you arent keen on maintaining them, so how much do you want for them".

I'll give them a better home, damnit.

This is a fun place, played Code Red on Saturday morning with a big group it was great. Included is two areas of arcades and a few pins including:

The Addams Family
Theater of Magic
Fastbreak
the pins all have an extra light at the top end of the playfield which lights up this area which i think is great.

Dual seat sit downs:
Harley Davidson
Sega Rally two

Standups:
1942 part3
there's about a dozen standups and I got distracted by a 24in1 and played JunoFirst until pulled away.

Anyway, going again next month will detail further then. Its a really nice setup.
