Hey all,

Some of you would have seen this pic in an earlier thread - http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/396940/Untitled-1.jpg.html

I decided to start a thread on this restore to try and keep up with Nino !!!:lol

Nothing super exciting just yet , just showing the (slow) progress of this FT restore.

Cabinet Front
If you saw the old shot of this cabinet front , it had temporary screws holding the front panel to the main cabinet boday and the front corner joins were open and splitting.

I have fixed the front of the cab, it was simple, I simply removed all the old self tappers that the previous owner had just belted into the cab. I then drilled some new ( neat and tidy ) pilot holes into the cab and sunk some new ( fitting ) screws in place. I also used a strong glue adhesive in the cabinet joints as well.
I countersunk the heads of the new screws and patched over them. If you look REAL close to the right of the shooter holes you can see my patching.
The cabinet is rock solid again but I am also planning to use some internal braces as well just to be 100% sure.

The front is sanded smooth and ready for new decals

http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/395/newfrontqu4.jpg

Decal Stripping
I have stripped a few cabs in my day.
I have NEVER had a decal as tough to remove as the left side of this FT main cabinet.
In this shot you can see about 3 hours worth of decal removing complete.
I nearly gave up yesterday- it was really bothering me.

http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/3172/halfstrippedoa8.jpg

Today I finished the strip of this side and removed all the glue with a sander and using coarse sandpaper.
After the glue was gone I used fine, then very fine sandpaper to get this cab silky smooth.
It only had a few nics and they are filld ( as in this shot ) , once that wood fill dries I will sand those spots and then the new decals con be applied

When you say you are going to get the cab sanded smooth - do you apply a clear to seal the wood before applying the decal ?

Keep them updates coming !

Oh- it is sanded smooooooooooooooooth already, real smooth - like Mark C at a disco :o, but yes I will seal this one as well .

Playfield is OK for a FT - see the image link in my first post in this thread for an idea as to some of the wear - it's fixable I guess.
But I am still gunna strip it and re-do a few things......will also make new clear plastics for the boat ( ramp ) as well , as they are a little 'yellowed'.............watch this space

And its my machine.....not for someone else.:D

in the original photos the backbox is worn right down to the timber. How did the backbox get so worn? Was it left outside by the previous owner?

Progress today - I REALLY needed to get this cabinet decalled and back together as I really want to get cracking and finish this one off, I figure I have a few weekends working on the PF ahead of me so I just wanted to get this cabinet out of the way........ couple of progress shots of some of todays work.....

If I do a cab decal I cut along the back edge and the bottom edge and line the decal up with those cabinet edges to get it positioned before I peel a section about 200-300mm of the backing off , I then stick it to the rear edge as a starting point and roll it out smoothing the decal down with a soft cloth as we go( wifey and me ) working towards the front. This means that all I have to do is trim the excess at the front and along the section that sits under the side rails.

http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/2737/img6955nr6.jpg

I am not sure if others use this method to apply decals but I find it makes the job simple......if I havent explained it clearly , heres a shot of the backbox decal started using the same method.....

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7294/img6822oq4.jpg

Heres a shot attempting to show the 'smoothness' of the decal ....

Heres a few shots to show the cabinet decals finishes - I thought I would show before and afters here so you can see the difference and vibrance in these new decals.

Also look for the cabinet fixes around the shooter and the front corner 'seams'....

Shooter section

Heres the shooter area BEFORE I fixed the cab and replaced the decals

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/4106/shooterbeforeedp0.jpg

And here it is today, note there are no more exposed self tappers holding this cab together...... no chunks out of cab and it is firmly back together at the seams.....leg protectors in place and excess cut off so they are not visible.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2086/fixedqh2.jpg

Backbox

Heres the back box before and after..... I dont like pinball toppers and this didnt have the fish anyway....but I decided to patch , sand and re-paint the top of the cabinet....

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/2690/bbbeforehk6.jpg

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4157/bbafterkx1.jpg

Cabinet Front

I hate lining up the front decals - this one was a little tough as you had to make sure you got the yellow centered around the start button hole AND didnt drop it too low so that the FISH TALES words got sliced when you trimmed the bottom later.....

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/1521/frontbeforehd5.jpg

It came up pretty well, the yellow around the start is about 1mm out to the left if you look at this pic.....

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/5416/frontaftereu9.jpg

The Main Cabinet

Now with the discussion of wet and dry in AK STTNG thread I am gonna stick my head on the block and say that if you had done the wet method, the start button would have been aligned properly.

Also, the pic below:

I hope you worked those 7 bubbles out Mr Wotto?

Who made these decals? They are too big for the cab because if you look at the pics:

If you knew anything about Pinball you would be dangerous! :lol

Did you know that the printing alignment is not 100% with most decals I have seen?

IE. It was impossible to align the start button and shooter rod sections on CV.

Wotto, how did you find the Fish Tale decals? :unsure

LOL.

Well then whoever made them is an idiot. It takes 5 seconds to resize an image before it is printed. And if they knew how to layer a scaled picture of an original underneath the repro they would have seen it was out.

And I do know things about pinballs. You whack the ball with a bat and score points, just like tennis.

ROFL :lol remember they weren't designed for collectors. So at the time they wouldn't have given a shit about alignment. All they cared about was collecting $$$.

Wotto doesn't seem to have the same issue as me by the looks of it because the start button is the only alignment reference point.

Some decals even have art between the sides which are to be aligned as well but then the start button doesn't align :lol

True.

But now that they repro'ing decals for collectors, not Ops, so you would think would get it right, right?

AskJacob
21st July 2008, 12:44 PM
Ah and now we hit a problem I was dealing with for my dracula plastics:

do you fix the f#ckups that were obviously missed due to needing to get a product market ready and not perfect

OR

do you preserve the item as it was produced?

---

Matter of personal preference - I kept the stuffups.

---

There is a fair bit of 'dodge' between machines with their factory decals, I can attest to that - when you see 2 machines next to each other (with original decals) they can be off from each other by 7mm or more!

However, any size changes caused by the repro process are naughty and should have been caught in QA (they do QA right?:rolleyes)

The not inconsiderable price of the decals should include some quality control... but I imagine that kind of money is instead tied up in license issues:unsure

End of the day... I'm glad I got decals for my IJ. They are glossy instead of matt like the original, but there is no way I could have come close to the quality of them on my own!

In addition, if you have a problem with the decal, what do you do ? Send it back to the US and ask them to send a replacement because it is one inch out :lol... Then you get a replacement that is exactly the same - 1 inch out... Most likely printed from the same run..

Wet VS Dry
Mylar VS Clearcoat
Low tack adhesive VS acetate sheets

You use whatever method you are comfortable with..

Oh - sorry ......yeah I found em quite good , apart from what I now know is that missing inch:rolleyes

Seriously , considering I apply dry, and I managed to get the Start surround that close and also get the FISH TALES wording where it is meant to sit on the front decal I think they are fine. The backbox was a snack and so was the alignment of the main cab sides.

That inch may be a little more 'pronounced' on this than it would if others did it as I always start with the back edge of the decal trimmed and lined up with the back edge of the machine and work towards the front......that means that any 'excess' trimming is taken off the edge towards the front of the cab.

Bit of a PF update today....

Just touching up the cracked areas around certain inserts etc.

I thought I would show the "Stringers' that is an area that is always cracking up , breaking up on most FT machines that I have seen.

Here it is as I recieved the machine

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/672/stringb4qb0.jpg

Ande here it is after just a little touching up and then overlaying the new decals from Curly at Lil shop of Pinball

Mad difference !! - worth 10 bucks hey !
Just a few touch ups to do and that area is good again.

Nah mate- each individual fish is a decal - I got 4 fish decals and they came with matching cut mylar to go over each fish.

And correcting myself - they were $40 for all for ( 10.00 each ) from Little Shop of Games
See here - http://www.littleshopofgames.com/decs3.html

Started like this ....

I started to touch up the larger colour areas of the tackle box, I always fillin the entire section and not just the line or crack I am covering, so that it blends in better.....I still have to tidy up areas as indicated by the arrows, I need to touch up and redo the thin black lines etc

Continued my FT Restore today after many months off ( I hate Winter :x) ....nothing huge or difficult ..all simple stuff today , just thought I would show some progress.

Cut some new plastics

I always like to replace the clear PF plastics on my machines as most of them have nearly always gone yellow...the FT Boat Ramp was no exception. I just buy a sheet of 2mm perspex , place the old yellow plastic onto it, trace it and then use a jigsaw on medium speed with a fine cutting blade to cut the new plastic to shape....I do it all manually, just pushing the plastic towards the blade as I go, and I keep the blade as close to the edge of the bench as possible to stop any flexing as that makes the sheet of perspex crack.

Hers the 2 new plastics sut to shape compared to the original yellowy ones, in this shot the new plastics still have the protective film on them.

Heres a similar shot with the film removed....
