I am experiencing a problem with my mame config that I hope someone can help me with. In my mame.ini file, I have set the video option to d3d but when I try and run a game from the command line (e.g. mame 1941) I see the following messages:

Proposed video mode not supported on device \\.\DISPLAY1
Unable to initialize Direct3D
Unable to complete window creation

If I set the video option to ddraw, the game starts with no errors. This problem was not occurring 3 weeks ago when I last ran Mame, and I have not changed anything in the config on my laptop. I tried updating the video drivers but it hasn't made any difference. Any suggestions on why this is occurring and/or how I can fix it? :unsure

Have you enabled multiple monitors in Windows perhaps?

Yes, I updated the video card drivers to the latest that I could find, but it didn't fix the issue. I then downloaded DirectX 9.0c and installed it, but it didn't fix the issue either. I'm going to backup my HDD and re-install XP and see what happens, my laptop is running like a dog anyway so a kick in the backside won't hurt. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Mame starts working with d3d again :sleep
