E3 2006: Twilight Princess In-Depth
We play through the entire demo and break down the details.
by Peer Schneider

May 10, 2006 - First there was one, now there are two. Nintendo
announced yesterday that it would release two different versions of The
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess -- one for GameCube, as previously
shown, and one for Nintendo Wii. Shown at numerous demo kiosks in
Nintendo's booth, we were able to go hands-on with the title this
morning. Does the Zelda formula work with Wii's new controllers? Or
will long-time fans be disappointed with the changes? We sent one such
long-time fan, self-professed Zelda nut Peer Schneider to go in-depth
with the title. Here are his impressions:

Let's cut to the chase: yes, it sure works. When I initially heard that
Nintendo was adding Wii controller support to my most anticipated
videogame, I was worried. After all, Zelda titles aren't really about
pointing and clicking and more about fighting and puzzle solving. I had
a feeling sword-slashing freehand controls would feel gimmicky in a
third-person game and ultimately be far less accurate than the
traditional lock-on/button control. In hindsight, I should have had
more faith in Nintendo's Zelda team. The developer smartly integrated
Wii pointer and nunchuck control to deliver something that not only
works, but feels fresh.

Remember playing Majora's Mask back on the N64? Despite the novel
three-day setup, some players found that it felt a bit too similar to
The Ocarina of Time and thus simply wasn't as exciting and fresh. I
have a feeling Twilight Princess might have turned out the same way.
It's a gorgeous game filled with great puzzles and characters -- and
apparently it's a longer and more involved quest than any Zelda game
before it -- but it's firmly rooted in the TOoT-style of gameplay.
Well, not anymore. The changes the control setup in the Wii version
adds to the game profoundly impact the game's feel. Fishing feels new.
Blocking feels new. Shooting arrows feels new. Even the spin attack has
a new twist to it. So even though you may encounter a familiar looking
puzzle, the new control dynamics give everything a fresh coat of paint.
Yes, you can get excited now.

The demo shown on the show floor offers two areas to explore: dungeon
and Hena's Fishing Hole. Where's the traditional boss battle demo
Nintendo usually includes in E3 demos? Don't worry, the boss battle is
actually at the end of the dungeon stage. Let's tackle the dungeon
first.

Dungeon Demo
If you've watched the Nintendo presentation we've captured on video,
you've already seen most of the area. The shadowy figure Midna acts as
a guide, while Navi -- your trusted fairy -- actually acts as a target
for the pointer functionality at times. You get to try out your sword
on a scarecrow (lock on with a shoulder button on the nunchuck, then
hit the B button underneath the pointer to strike), navigate a series
of wooden walkways above a waterlogged area, and shoot arrows at
enemies. You control Link as always via the left analog stick and you
can quick-center the camera with the same button used for lock-on. The
trigger button on the nunchuck lets you kick the game into a
first-person camera view. And it's here that players experience the
freelook function of the pointer for the first time. The experience
with the aiming control is easily likened to using an analog thumb
stick for the first time. Some players will struggle with the
sensitivity of the on-screen target that shows what you're looking or
aiming at. Other players (like me) only took a moment to adjust the
controls. It helps when you watch someone else play first, of course.

The combination of the controller rumble, the audio feedback from the
built-in controller speaker and the motion controls create something
really special here. Nintendo's shown without doubt that the control
setup enhances many of the actions performed in Link's world, but
thankfully also exercised restraint and didn't overthrow everything
we've become accustomed to over the years just for the sake of showing
off the controller. I did experience some small hitches, however. For
one, the action of throwing crates by shaking the nunchuck didn't
always work. I'm confident that this is a bug that Nintendo will easily
be able to fix as the spin attack worked like a charm every time. The
second issue came up when trying to aim at a nasty little guy far away
on a platform. The freehand controller had somehow gotten calibrated
off-center, making quick aiming extremely difficult. It's unclear
whether this was a bug with the game code or a problem with the
freehand-aim control setup that Nintendo has yet to solve across all
its titles. Luckily, I only encountered this problem once during my two
walkthroughs of the dungeon demo area.

____

Here are some of the things I discovered and tried out during the
dungeon demo:

* Item Selection
As mentioned above, Navi acts as a quasi mouse-arrow while you're
exploring. It's easy to ignore the little fairy whirring around while
you're controlling Link with the analog stick, but there are times when
you have to direct your eyes towards her position. For example,
selecting your item sub-menu is done by aiming Navi at the item cross
in the upper right and pressing a button. This will access the menu.
You can then simply point at the item you want to equip and press the
button you want to assign it to.
* Crates and Pots
You can pick up crates, throw them with the nunchuck or put them down.
You can smash them with your sword and, as enemies demonstrated with
some fire arrows, can also be burned. Crates and pots contain the usual
assortment of heart power-ups, rupees, and weapon refills (arrows, for
example).
* The Sword and Shield
All your favorite moves are here, including slashing, the forward
slice, spin attacks, and the rolls, sidesteps and backflips. The sword
fighting is controlled via the pointer's buttons (not by waving it in
the air like in Red Steel, for example). However, if you lock on and
jerk the Wii-mote forward, Link parries. An attacking enemy is
instantly stunned by this maneuver. As shown in the press conference
demonstration, Link can also perform a downward thrust finishing move
on enemies who are on the ground. Currently, it can be performed at the
press of a button or by moving the nunchuck downward -- the latter
feels much better, of course.
* Spin Attack
To perform Link's classic tornado attack, you perform a circular motion
with the nunchuck. I was surprised to find it to be more responsive
than the traditional circular motion on the analog stick on N64.
* Bow and Arrow
The freehand-style pointer reinvents the bow controls. It really feels
fresh -- and most importantly, challenging. Shooting arrows in real
life is not an easy task. You not only have to have a steady hand while
aiming, you have to do so while pulling back on the bow string.
Nintendo emulates this by letting you aim manually with the pointer and
then making you press the direction on the digital pad you have
equipped the bow to to nock the arrow. Though this doesn't duplicate
the two-handed control of a real bow, it adds the challenge of having
to press a button with the same hand you're using to aim. You really
have to steady your hand to take out a faraway opponent. The demo had
some strategically placed Bokoblin-like imps for players to snipe. You
could either directly shoot them or shoot an explosive barrel nearby
for a money shot.
* The Claw Hookshot
The new hookshot looks like a mixture between Wind Waker's claw-endowed
grapple and the classic chain hookshot. You fire it like the bow and
arrow, but you actually have to hold down the button while aiming. Let
go and it fires and pulls you up or forward, just like in previous
Zelda games. In the dungeon demo, the hookshot was the only way to get
to an area with a treasure box. The reward: a yellow rupee. Meh. I felt
all smart getting there. Money just isn't exciting when there's no
store demo...
* The Lantern
Yes, it's back. We've carried burning sticks in 3D Zelda titles before,
but the lantern is a welcome addition to Twilight Princess. Not only
does it light up the dark, you can also wave it by moving the
controller. One can only imagine the fire-related puzzles it will be
used for. The lantern requires petroleum, which can be kept in bottles.

* Bottles
It's not a Zelda game without the ability to store items in bottles.
The bottles Link had on him in the demo were filled with lantern fluid
and a fairy.

*continued*

* Boots
Yes, you can walk underwater when using these trusted heavy boots --
even when on a fishing trip. Yes, Link can only walk slowly when
they're equipped. Yes, they make him really heavy and able to push down
rusted pressure plates. Yes, they are used to anchor you to the ground
in "sticky" situations, such as a giant magnet used in the demo to
transport Link from one walkway to another; and effectively turns his
world upside down. But there are no doubt more secrets slumbering in
these "electrified" upgrades of the classic item. Expect to see plenty
of underwater and upside down action in the future.
* The Gale Boomerang
Looks like some of Wind Waker's wind-based puzzles are back. In the
demo dungeon, players have to figure out a simple boomerang puzzle.
There are four pillars with spinners on top. Players are asked to lock
on to the tops of the pillars (you can also lock on to the pillars
themselves, but that won't help you here) one by one and then send the
boomerang flying at the targets. Aiming is done with the pointer,
locking on with the B button underneath the Wii-mote. The trick in this
particular puzzle is that players have to pay attention to a pattern on
the ground that shows you in which order to hit the little windmills.
The boomerang can of course also be used to retrieve items or knock out
enemies. You can move around slowly while aiming, by the way.
* The Map
The staple map display returns. Naturally, you can easily turn on or
off the small map overlay, complete with entrance locator and Link's
current position marker -- but there's also a bigger map available. We
took a little peak and saw tempting hints at other locations, including
a Goron Mine.

There are no doubt many more things to uncover in the demo, but
playtime at E3 is limited so I eventually had to move on and open that
door at the end of the demo level Nintendo left shut during the E3
conference demo. Behind it is the Balrog-like fire giant shown in
screenshots and earlier trailers. When Link walks in, the statue-like
giant looks shadowy and black and sits motionless in the middle of an
arena. As Link approaches, a jewel on the creature's forehead begins to
glow and the giant comes to life. He shakes the giant iron chains
attached to his arms and bursts into flames. If you don't want to know
how to defeat him, skip to the next paragraph now. It's a no-brainer,
actually: using your bow and arrow, you have to target the jewel and
fire off an arrow. This will blind the creature, giving you a chance to
run up to one of his chains, grab and hold it with the B button and
pull on it. But pull as you might, the giant is simply too strong and
will drag you along. The solution? Heavy Boots, you guessed it. With
the boots attached, you can slowly drag the chains backwards and make
the fire giant fall down. Then it's the tried-and-true Gohma-maneuver
that does him in. Hit the eye and you emerge victoriously. An
impressive death sequence shows the creature rear up in agony as the
flames extinguish and he fades to a dark black and shrinks down to a
smaller size. The demo ends. I want more.

Fishing
The second demo area is home to Hena, the light-haired girl you've seen
in some of the misty village screenshots released last year. Hena says
she loves ducks and fishing and fittingly acts as a guide to the
fishing sequences that make a long-awaited return. The fishing hole
area looks great, with nice-looking water effects, a misty, overexposed
look in the morning hours and striking, golden hues in the evening. The
series' staple day/night cycle really shows off the beauty of this
game. It may not be as sharp as hi-def games on the other two consoles,
but it still has plenty of style and appeal.

There are two different types of fishing: bobber fishing and lure
fishing. Bobber fishing, at its current state, feels like an
afterthought. Link can explore the misty lake area at his own leisure
and cast using the pointer. Just tilt the pointer backwards and flick
it forward to toss the bobber into the water. The line in this mode is
very short, so jerking the controller up will make the bobber hop on
the water or fly up into the air. If you're near fish -- which can be
seen through the transparent water -- you might catch their attention.
While the physics look sound, the mechanics in this mode feel
unfinished. For example, moving the pointer left and right doesn't move
the fishing rod. Thus, it doesn't feel like an extension of the
controller and you don't feel as connected to it as to the bow and
arrow, of example. I'm hoping this will be fixed.

Luckily, the second fishing mode is much, much better. If you select to
go lure fishing, you climb into a canoe with Hena and paddle out to the
lake. No cutscenes here, folks. You paddle the canoe in real-time and
stop anywhere you want to. The lure casting mechanics are clever and
feel totally natural once you know the controls. Your right thumb rests
on top of the A button and, when pressed, holds the line in place. You
then tilt the controller back and flick it forward. If you
simultaneously release the A button, you'll send the lure soaring
through the air. You'll feel the controller rumble and you can actually
hear the line whirring through the speaker in the remote controller --
a nice touch that makes it feel all the more real. You can then shake
either the nunchuck or the pointer to jig the lure in the water and
attract fish. Pushing down on the digital pad reels in the line fast,
while pressing the A button reels it in slowly. When a fish bites, you
tilt the controller backwards and start cranking. No, really. You can
actually move the nunchuck in circular motion to reel the fish in
faster. Assisted by the rumble, it feels great. Too bad that the only
fish I managed to land were immediately dismissed by Hena as boring.

The Look
Twilight Princess looks pretty when displayed on good TV sets. When
blown up to large sizes at Nintendo's press conferences, Wii's
inability to display higher resolutions than 640x480 made things look
jaggy and "dirty" -- but on smaller sets, the game looks very nice. If
you're expecting an upgrade from the GameCube incarnation of TP shown
at last year's E3, you're in for a disappointment, however. The texture
resolution and overall look are firmly rooted in GameCube code.
Likewise, Link's animation when moving from complete standstill to
walking and running still looks overly stiff just like in last year's
GCN demo, but there's plenty of eye-candy to make the game come to
life, such as bloom lighting in the fishing sequences and
Wind-Waker-style heat distortion. When stacked up against other
GameCube (and Wii) titles, Twilight Princess is definitely in the top
graphics echelon. It's visually not on par with next-generation titles
on other platforms, but it presents a rich world with plenty of variety
and complex architecture that just beckons to be explored.

The Verdict So Far
It looks like Twilight Princess was worth the wait. Though still
unfinished, the integration of the Wii controller functions gives the
game a fresh feel, while still delivering the classic Zelda action and
puzzles fans have been waiting for. The only downsides I saw are that
there are some small problems with the controls (tossing crates, for
example) that still need to be ironed out and the difficulty in the
demo was ridiculously low. I assume the latter is just so beginners can
enjoy the demo, but just in case: Nintendo, please add multiple
difficulty settings. It'll take a programmer a few hours and will
ensure that expert players will have a better time with the title.
Losing a quarter of a heart when getting burned by a giant fireball
just feels wrong. Let us cocky bastards pick "Expert" and make us
suffer. Outside of these two issues, Twilight Princess looks like a
clear winner and has secured itself a permanent spot at the top of my
most-wanted list until its release later this year.

May 10, 2006 - First there was one, now there are two. Nintendo

I was under the impression that there was going to be one version released, and it was going to be compatible with both machines (GameCube game with extra detail and Wiimote compatability for the Wii).

Have Nintendo changed their minds and will release two different versions now? Or is this guy misunderstanding the release schedule?

I was at Pac Fair ToyRus 3-4 weeks ago, and the assistant/kid/(insert spotty teenage simpsons character with the breaking voice), said "I don't know". So I do think it was probably just a silly guestimate on their part. It had better be cheapish. I am willing to fork out a little more for a bundle of 2 wii-motes and hopefully the nun-chucker attachment (hopefully x2 nun-chucker). Also a game? I'm dreaming. Hopefully not. But a bundle like I just mentioned would be a sweet starter deal, and I would pay more for it.

It only seems cheap because everyone has gotten used to the retarded pricing schemes on other brands of consoles. :)

But seriously: Nintendo said from day one that they would not be having a pissing contest with the big boys. Instead of boasting who has the biggest teraflops/processor-count/gigatexels/penis, they would instead go for a cheap console with online content and a new controller.

And as mentioned, the semi-confirmed price has been $US 200, which is only $265 Australian spacebux at today's exchange rate. $350 I consider to be the upper maximum. If the Aussie dollar continues to do well, don't be surprised if we see a AU$299 Wii.

MK makes me yawn. The game is broken and busted.

*ALL* the new 3D MK titles have infinites (ie: combos that last forever, or at least until your opponent is dead). That doesn't make for exciting gaming when whoever gets the first hit in wins the match.

From all accounts on the Shoryuken forums, the game designers put up a request thread on their website some months/years back asking MK fans what they wanted changed about the game. Everyone listed all of MK's faults, and the designers got uhffy, closed the thread, and made the game the same as always.

Anyways... enough MK hate from me. There are plenty of people who love it. I don't. I'll be buying Smash Brothers Brawl on release day instead. :)

I share the "Last Blade" love - both the original and the sequel. Great games. Likewise Samurai Shodown 2 was a good 'un. I think they lost the plot a bit on the later titles.

On topic (there's something new for me): SNK/Playmore have announced further support for the Wii. Sony and Microsoft are charging an arm and a leg for next-gen dev kits and publishing/licensing. Plus there's the whole "no 2D on our stuff" rules that make continuing the KoF and Metal Slug games difficult for SNK-P. As such, they've announced to continue publishing PS2 titles for as long as the console lives, but also jumping on the Wii bandwagon as soon as it lands.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that other Japanese companies with a penchant for 2D titles will look out for the Wii. (I'm drooling at the idea of Cave switching to Wii too - fingers crossed!).

Excite Truck is going to rock.

I wonder what games will be available on release? I've got my pre-order happening, so I have to think about what game to get.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that the rumours are right, and Wii-Sports is bundled by Nintendo themselves, and then Toys R Us throw in another game on top.

Excellent stuff elvis.

Here is some more:
http://www.vooks.net/modules.php?module=article&id=10959

Nintendo Japan today held a press conference to announce the Wii information the world has been waiting for. In Japan, Wii will launch on December 2, 2006 for 25,000 yen, the same price the GameCube launched for back in 2001. Sixteen games from ten difference companies will be available at launch.

Nintendo also revealed details of the Interface, how the system will use different channels for weather, friends, send photos from phones to your Wii, the GUI of the Wii, Virtual Console pricing, Whats in the Box new games and upgraded screens of them too.

Anything you ever wanted to know about Wii inside, That is everything but the Australia date and price which will be revealed tomorrow.

VC Pricing
Famicon (NES) - 500 yen ($5.66AUD)
Super Famicon (SNES) - 800 yen ($9.06AUD)
Nintendo 64 - 1,000 yen ($11AUD)

The Japanese will have the option of using their Credit Card to make purchases, or a Points card (Eg. iTunes cards).

Respected Japanese magazine Famitsu reports thirty Nintendo games and thirty PC Engine/Megadrive (Turbo-Grafx/Genesis) will be available before year's end. The price of the PC Engine/Megadrive games is unknown. 10 New Virtual Console games will be released each month, Nintendo also listed over 20 companies including Capcom, Sega, Konami that will be supporting the Virtual Console.

Also revealed was the price of Zelda: The Twilight Princess and Wii Sports. Zelda will retail for 6800 yen ($76AUD) while Wii Sports (which includes Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Bowling and Boxing) appears to be a budget title and will retail for 4800 yen ($54AUD). Presumably this is an indication of a price range between 4800 and 6800 for Wii games in Japan. It is unknown if other regions such as Australia will follow a similar pricing method.

Including in each Japanese Wii box is the following:

1 x Wii console
1 x Wii controller strap
1 x Wii Remote
1 x Nunchuck controller
1 x AC adaptor
1 x AV cable
1 x Stand
1 x Support plate
1 x Sensor bar
1 x Sensor bar stand
2 x Battery (AA)

For extra controllers, Nintendo Japan will sell the Wii Remote and Nunchuck attachment seperately. The remote will cost 3800 yen ($43AUD), while the Nunchuck attachment will cost 1800 yen ($20AUD). The Classic controller (used for VC games) will also cost 1800 yen.

Also shown off was the Wii interface, with editing software for photos, characture design for a Wii based avatar as well as everything else. We'll have more information on this tomorrow when we get the english press releases and of course the Aussie date and price.

Please note that AUD prices are direct conversions. They are a guide only.

Hell yeah. They ****ed up big time with the N64 by trying to get companies to sign a "we won't release our game anywhere else for 3 years" clause.

Sure, it helped kill of Sega as a console maker. But all it did was spring to life Sony (who's Playstatoin was made from bits from the failed "SNES CDROM" project) and Microsoft in its place.

Nintendo have gone from being one of my most-favourite to least-favourite to most-favourite again gaming mobs in the last 20 years. What a bloody yo-yo drama tale.

I don't understand why it can't. Adding DVD playback is a matter of a $5 laser and some DVD-reading software (face it - over 200MHz RISC, anything is powerful enough to decode MPEG2 streams).

I guess Nintendo have their reasons?

Probally why it wasn't included in the Gamecube too. They just want it to be a game machine so people would concentrate only on that part of it.

On the few sites I've searched on they all quote the same thing that it would have increased the size and price of the unit AND they had the choice of either going DVD or region free so they chose region free instead! So any in house titles will be region free although 3rd party publishers could still impose some sort of blocking.

Hallelujah!

Now I only hope that we have the option of getting Japanese games via the Virtual Console system, OR at the very least we all get the same titles when and where available. I hope PAL regions don't get lumped with crap mainstream games while the Japanese get all the cool shmups and RPGs.

Region-free roxors my boxors. SNK have announced they are dropping Sony as their main development target due to their stupid anti-2D rules. So all new SNK fighters and collections (Metal Slugs as well as prior retro packs) will be coming out on Wii. Region-free means elvis can import without having to mod his console! Hooray!!!

First the price and now region encoded..what next you have to buy the graphics card..lol

$329.00 would of been a great price ..close enough to $300 which is about an ounce ( depending who you know ) which would let the pot slide for a couple of weeks and $400 is getting close to gettting another arcade project...

Though it does come with a lot of extra's
Ever since the package price has been announced the thing on everyone's lips has been; What do you get in the package exactly?

It is my pleasure to announce that according to [Nintendo Central]the Wii package will include:

1x Wii Console
1x Wii Remote
1x Nunchuck attachment
1x Console stand
1x Sensor bar and stand
1x AV Composite/Component cable
1x AC Adapter
2x AA batteries
And of course...

1x Wii Sports!

I do hope that "lots of extras" comment was written sarcastically by the author.

One WiiMote and chuck isn't much, considering the extra wiimote is US$40, and the chuck another US$20 on top just for a second player.

My interest in this title is waning quickly. I was only in it for the retro-gaming aspect. Sure I could emulate games, but this was the first real option the world had for legal retro download-pay-and-play titles. But if we're going to be arse-raped for the privilege, I'm going elsewhere.

Maybe I should revisit this in 12 months time and see if it's worth it by then. Sounds like a good idea.

I am a bit with you here dude..seems like a bit of con...so multi play action is the theme so I have to buy (4) FOUR wiimotes to experience the full experience...
Wil (no pun intended) have to pay another $100.00 + to get the extra controllers if it's all about Wii (We) there should be two..and I pasted that info about the extra stuff so no quote from me

I dropped in on Saturday afternoon to make my preorder, but the first thing I asked was what the deal was with the game. After asking around the only conclusion the staff could come to was that they didn't really know yet. They also mentioned they hadn't been told the price or release date yet from their head office.

I left the store with my preorder money still sitting in my wallet. :(

Nintendo Wii™ region compatibility

September 15th: As reported by Wired News (http://blog.wired.com/games/index.blog?entry_id=1556591)today, Nintendo's VP of marketing Perrin Kaplan has indicated that "[...]just like the Nintendo DS, Nintendo's Wii games will work on any console regardless of region. While there may be a region lock that third-party publishers can choose to turn on, Nintendo seems to be setting the standard by making its own first-party games region free.[...]

While Play-Asia.com welcomes such move to give gamers from any territory the possibility to play games from any region, it cannot be ruled out that Nintendo still changes their decision on this matter. We will surely post an update upon availability of the first Nintendo Wii™ consoles and games.

Good to see Harvey backing Nintendo..Funny how things change..when the Cube and PS2 were coming out they told me that they would not stock Nintendo so I asked about apple stuff for the **** of it and they said no way no-one buys that.. I guess when I walk into Harvey store this Xmas it will be full of Pod's and Wii..And
about the same time I was asking about certain cube games in K-mart and the little smart ass geeky shit head told me in front of about 4 or 5 Mum's and Dad's that Nintendo had gone bust and they won't be getting any more Nintendo stuff in Hah!
Where are you now shit for brains holding out for your PS3 or refinancing your mortage to buy one..Oh wait hang on you wouldn't have a house cause you wasted all your money on all your PS2 shit...

Dolby confirms Dolby Pro Logic II in Wii
http://www.vooks.net/modules.php?module=article&id=10997

Today Dolby Laboratories have announced today that the Wii gaming console from Nintendo will use Dolby Pro Logic II technology to offer gamers an immersive surround sound experience. Squashing the hopes and dreams of Audio-philes who were holding out for full 5.1 Dolby Surround.

More Inside

“The Wii console will break down the walls that separate gamers from everyone else” said Koji Kondo, Manager, Sound Group, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division at Nintendo “Sound is a key part of this equation and because Wii supports Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound technology, we think everyone can have a great audio experience.”

“Dolby Pro Logic II technology ensures that the Wii console can offer rich, immersive surround sound, which is essential to a great gaming experience,” said John Griffin, Marketing Director, Games, Dolby Laboratories. “We’re looking forward to hearing how great Nintendo’s games sound at launch.

I think the idea is to add more retro titles as time goes on, so the more obscure stuff might turn up later.

Nintendo just unveiled their official "launch window game" list for both the Nintendo Wii and Virtual Console. All said there's more than 60 titles in the line-up hitting stores between launch day and the end of the year. That's like a dozen games a week, though I'm told most of them will be out day and date of the console. Many third party titles are still being locked down, though most will launch by the end of November. Expect all the listed VC games to be available by the end of December.

Some tasty launch window titles are Trauma Center: Second Opinion, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metal Slug Anthology, Splinter Cell Double Agent and Call of Duty 3. For the Virtual Console, delicious games include Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Space Harrier II, Toe Jam & Earl, F-Zero, SimCity and Bonk's Adventure.

Hit the jump for the full list of games for the Wii and Virtual Console. Brian Crecente

I got there late, but they were showing off features of the inbuilt web browser plus all of the ratings management systems. Nothing exciting althoug some of the features of the browser were pretty cool.

I was dissapointed though because the only "real" game was Zelda. The wii sports game took up the rest of the demo floor. I saw some footage of the new Resident Evil - Umbrella Chronicles and it looks pretty good. I just wish that Nintendo had more games out on the floor.

Nintendo Australia finalises all Wii Launch Details and Pricing

As the December 7th launch of its innovative Wii home video game console draws near, Nintendo Australia has today confirmed the launch line-up and accessory details. Wii will be sold at an affordable, mass-consumer SRP of just $399.95. The price includes one wireless Wii Remote controller, one Nunchuk controller and the ground breaking collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc, which anyone can play using simple movements.

A complete list of the launch games, pricing for Nintendo first party games and accessory pricing including that beloved Component Cable inside.

On launch day Nintendo will have available:
- Wii Sports: A compilation of tennis, baseball, golf, bowling and boxing, packed-in with every Wii console.
- Wii Play: That contains 9 games on one disc, available with Wii Remote for SRP$79.95.
…and the most anticipated launch title of all…
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the greatest Zelda adventure to date for SRP$99.95.

Wii’s self-loading media bay also can play the entire library of hundreds of Nintendo GameCube titles from day one.

Add to this around 20 third party titles from the world’s largest distributors, and Wii will offer the most extensive launch window software line-up in the history of video gaming, including: The action packed Red Steel and the out of control Rayman: Raving Rabbids both from Ubisoft. The adrenaline rush of Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam from Activision as well as the animated hit Disney-Pixar’s Cars from THQ. Add to these great games and quality game franchises such as: Madden NFL 07 and Need for Speed Carbon from Electronic Arts; Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, Barnyard and SpongeBob Squarepants: Creature from Krusty Krab from THQ; Monster Truck 4 x 4: World Circuit, Open Season, GT Pro Series, Far Cry: Vengeance and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent™ from Ubisoft; Call of Duty 3™ and Marvel™ Ultimate Alliance from Activision.

Additional Wii Remote controllers will sell for SRP$69.95. Accessories such as the Nunchuk controller and the Classic controller will be available for SRP$29.95. Consumers will also have the option of purchasing a Wii Play + Wii Remote bundle for only SRP$79.95. Wii Play is a compilation title that contains 9 games on one disc. With fantastic games such as Shooting, Laser Hockey, Billiards, Table Tennis and more, Wii Play + Wii Remote represents great value for those looking to add a second Wii Remote to their collection.

A Wii Component Video Cable will also be available, for a higher quality video signal, at SRP$49.95.

South Park episode 1012: Go, God. Go! Part II

Cartman is unable to wait three weeks until the Nintendo Wii comes out, spending his time mindlessly pacing in front of the store and the rest of his time asking how long until it comes out at intervals of about five seconds. ("It's like waiting for Christmas...times a thousand.") Unable to wait any longer, he decides to go into suspended animation and get unfrozen as soon as the Wii comes out.

It's true they they put more in that little cube than MS or Sony could hope for. that little cube has untapped power and kudos to nintendo for stopping piracy cause they won..even the game magazines would say its the end for NiN cause of not complying to piracy standards lol..who is laughing now .. It's the games we play not the console..

It's still pretty easy to mod the Gcube.
Ninty's problem with the 'cube was lack of games... releasing a good game once every 6 months aint good enough. Plus lack of 3rd party support didnt help either. If there were more games of the calibur of Res Evil 4 released, it would have pwned. Plus Ninty Australia release f*ck all games here.

PS2 probably won the last gen war 'cause of the sheer number of games available, plus those 'Sing Star/DDR/guitar hero' style games lately. Alot of Xboxes were bought just to turn into media centers... too bad M$ lost money on every one bought... :evil

I would love a 26" cab (like Hard driving)dedicated to Test drive unlimited with full adsl connection...Now that would be an awesome arcade game ! Of course it would need force feedback and rumble ;)

Only 24 days to go..remember to wake me form Chronological sleep Butters...Was looking at an opening of the Wii next to the PS2 at Gizmodo..The Wii looks like a DVD/CD drive for the PC and about the same size..hmmm maybe slip it into the tower of a pc and run it through the same monitor..hmmm.lots of thoughts happening here..the PS3 is plain ugly..nice and shiny..black and chrome..oh chrome..the PS symbol jumps right out at you if your 2 inchs away from the unit..god I hope Sony change the design.they are really slipping ..wish I had a job there looks like you stare at that the kitchen appliances all day and then say yeah I could put a games machine inside that..

And it looks like the release date for PS3 might be sooner than expected...shudder..

I was at Myer Pac fair last night. They had two Wiis being set up ready to play. I was looking at them and the promotions girls. They said they would be another half hour and I could have a game. They looked great really small and on some funky angle. I went to go and have something to eat and when I went back the half hour later, all packed up and gone. Vanished into thin air. Where are? Where are what? Pricks.

No wonder Nintendo Australia sucks!!

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/nintendo-australia/nintendo-australia-pr-manager-i-dont-know-215933.php

What, is it some new rite of passage for Australian gaming execs to open their mouths and publicly shame themselves? Sony got the ball rolling a few weeks back, and now it's Nintendo's turn.

Nintendo Australia have a long, storied history of ineptitude. Listening to their PR Manager, Vispi Bhopti, reveals why. When asked by fansite Aussie-Nintendo about the type of games Aussies could expect to see on the Virtual Console, this was his response:

I don't know what the entire spread of games are, that are going to come out. What I do know is that we've got a lot of games at launch, we've got 26, I'm pretty sure, games at launch.... And, you know, whether or not there's this game or that game, or that particular game - I don't know which particular games they're going to end up bringing to Australia. But it's not a sort of, umm, you know, the sky falling or anything like that. At the end of the day, there's plenty of play on Wii.

How very professional. Vispi, if you want to help shake the public's conception of Nintendo Australia as a bunch of lazy asshats, you need to at least, umm, I don't know, make an effort. Luke Plunkett

Interesting read:

http://222b.livejournal.com/144560.html

The Virtual Console's emulation is keeping it real. Unlike the games we've seen pop up on Xbox Live Arcade, which feature shiny new HD-cleansed graphics and alterations like new menu screens, the VC is replicating the original experience right down to the on-screen resolution.

This post goes into a lot of detail about the process, including issues over aspect ratios and why HD TV owners won't get the same authentic experience SD owners will (they kill the scan lines of the old SD signals, blurring the image).

Oh, the irony. Not only is your shiny new 40" HD LCD not properly supported by the Wii, it's going to give you a lesser picture quality than crummy old SD TVs when playing VC games.

So don't throw out your CRT's ;)
Sounds like the MAME debate of PC monitors Vs Arcade CRTs

And here's a little write up i found about the nunchuk....

* Nunchuk controller
Contoured to perfectly fit a player's hand, the Nunchuk controller
builds on the simplicity of the Wii Remote controller and goes an extra
step to meet the needs of gamers. The Nunchuk controller connects to the
Wii Remote controller at its expansion port and is used in conjunction
with the Wii Remote controller.
The Nunchuk controller contains the same motion-sensing technology
enabled in the Wii Remote controller but also includes an analog stick
to assist in character movement. In several games, players will use the
analog stick of the Nunchuk controller to move their characters and the
Wii Remote controller to perform a specific action, whether that's
throwing a pass in football or aiming a ranged weapon in an action game.
Along with the analog stick, the motion-sensing Nunchuk controller also
contains two buttons positioned for quick access. Because the Wii Remote
and Nunchuk controllers are only relatively dependent on each other,
players are free to hold them in whichever hand is most comfortable. The
ambidextrous nature of the Wii controllers grants accessibility seldom
seen in game controllers.

I got to play the Wii today at the local shopping center. My impressions are very good. Bowling and modern day Duck Hunt (part of the Wii Play game package, not Wii Sports) was fun, Zelda was great too, the fishing is fun for all. I went for a run through the dungeon area as well and that utilizes the nunchuk controller. Whoever said the controller was for anyone to pick up, obviously has not played Zelda as I found it a little tricky in this game. I found the controller alot smaller than I had thought and the sensitivity of it was surprising. Didn't take me long to pwned some young kid on the modern day Duck Hunt though. :) The nunchuk is very comfortable but I found the Wii-mote a little weird. I needed a go-go-gadget thumb to be able to use the quad-directional pad. I need to play it more I think I also played Excite Truck, great fun too.

I have mixed feeling about the Wii. Other consoles (PS2 and Xbox360) had way more young pimply teens around them. The Wii had very young kids to full blown adults and some old codgers around it which is encouraging.

The young kid manning the Wii-Station told me that the consoles where fake and that a HDD containing the basic game and hardware was underneath. He showed me. I asked him if there was a real console here and he said yes one. Which was the Excite Truck. There were 4 Wii-Stations BTW.

Stevo, I was happy to be corrected again today with the people telling me a nunchuk comes standard. Excellent.

The name makes people laugh and attempt to make 'wee' jokes, therefore increasing awareness of the console... or something.

I played a Wii (well, 3) today at the shopping centre. The wiimote is fairly easy to get used to in Zelda and Wii Sports, but the shooting mini game was hard to move the cursor across the screen quickly and shoot small targets accurately. It might be that I had not gotten used to it fully though.

I pre-ordered one today through Target.. it took 3 staff before I found someone who had even HEARD of the Wii.. then another 10 mins to find any info on their voucher bonus for preorder. The best I got out of them was that the entire '$400 value' of the vouchers are for discounts on Wii Games and Accessories, not stuff like Samsung TV's (which Myer are doing).

Didn't take long for a arcade controller hack.

Pretty quick off the mark!
I like the idea of Capcom or Sega making a virtual console joystick for the Wii especially for older fighting games..could be a market there..or an adapter that allows your classic game pad from the virtual console game to plug directly into your Wii..

We'll be doing our best to bring you all of the highlights (if any) and lowlights (many expected) of a midnight launch that promises to be the most half-assed you've seen this year (apathy is an Australian speciality), so do be sure to check back regularly throughout the evening.

Just got the Target catalogue in the mail today and they have all the Wii stuff cheaper than anywhere else. They have the controller with the extra sports game for $64.95. I'll probably get that tomorrow (to ensure I get the game) and wait a while for the console. They've got the console for $389.95
