Ever since I saw this cab I have wanted to build one.
I love it.

It is a 'fun' looking cab like the DKs.

There is someone else one the forum who is also going to build one. His is going to be a dead set replica, this one isn't.

Here is were this project is at.
After months of searching the web and communicating with others I am almost ready to build the cabinet. This is totally not like me because I usually just go for it and hope it turns out ok. :lol

I have still yet to find a decent set of plans that have the all important front curve measurements right. So my idea was to take a pic off the web and scale it to the correct height and width and see what it looks like.

I used the plans from Jakobud to build a skinny cab but the instant I cut that curve I knew it was wrong. It was just too steep. You can see it here:

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/5432451/309664599.jpg

I cut that curve with the jigsaw in thinking I will save it aside for this idea about scaling the picture. This is the results.

On the left you will see the complete side of a Ms Pacman cab printed on paper and taped together. On the right you will see the off-cut from the Skinny cab.

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/19311410/309663868.jpg

This is a close up:

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/19311410/309663866.jpg

Although you might think, meh its only minor, but I think it is important to get this spot on. Sure nobody will know, but I WILL!!

I found another pic on the web drawn by joymonkey and he shows exactly the same thing. Jakos plans are the thin red line and the Ms Pacman is drawn to scale.

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/19311410/311767648.jpg

You can see the shape is way off.
I also found out that the cab is 620mm wide which is an odd size. That makes the kickplate 584mm.

Luckily I found this out because the art I have wouldn't have fitted as its only 590mm wide. (I usually use 600mm wide pre-cut panels for everything but the sides).

This is my prinout sitting on the art:

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/19311410/309663871.jpg

Confirmation I have the measurements bang on (note how everything lines up):

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/19311410/309663870.jpg

So the idea,
An almost replica of a Ms Pac cab.
I won't be sourcing anything original for this 1st one but I will probably source a Midway door for the next.

Sometime next week I will start on the cab, so until then, peace out.

PS, one thing I forgot, its gonna have lots of Pink Bits :lol :lol :lol

I for one appreciate the difference in that CP area shape, its quite significant.

The original cut is like a fake perky tit. The new one is a lot more natural.

I'm sure back in the day Ms Pacman would never have considered fakes.

You mean 1 side Arcade machine, spin it 180 and its a Jukebox?

Not too sure about that idea myself, not knocking it but from a practacality point of view wouldn't you like to listen to your Juke Box AND ply Ms Pac-man at the same time..?

Post some more details, maybe in a new thread.. Most likely more here than meets the eye.

Yeah or not spin it, but have it placed on the side of a wall. 1 side if jamma 48-in-1. The other is touchscreen jukebox. Its meant for parties etc :P

Haven't forgotten about this. Been as busy as a boy with 2 cocks lately.

Today I finally got the last of the measurements I needed.
Will adjust my drawings and hope to make a start next week.

You have good taste Sir Spacies, looking forward to another eye popping experience. Can't wait till you start shooting these Midway cabs over to OZ:badgrin
Love the colour schemes on these types of cabs DK, Ms Pacman, Galaxian, Defender etc they do stand out.
Good stuff!

Hi Spacies

That's artwork looks great, is that twobits.com sideart or your own? I asked because I want to build a ms pacman cabinet, got a NOS marquee, bezel and original control panel to use.

I will do a Fatty soon but I needed to do a test cab for the skinny to make sure I am happy with the shape. The Fatty (deeper version like the original) has the screen almost laying flat and also the CP height is @ 900 compared to the skinny's 1000mm.

It has turned out pretty well. One thing I am a little pissed about was using the grey tinted glass instead of clear because the artwork isn't as bright. Hey, this is a test cab so I will remember that for next time.

Hey Fanko, do you have the art already?

I have a spare complete set here, sides, kick panel, marquee, custom CP and bezel. Only a slight change is that I always build my cabs @ 600mm wide. That way I can use the precut 600mm wide MDF panels :)

Heh, a piece of paper boss :) You will need to have a jigsaw at home to do any curves but that's easy. Its the straight cuts that matter most.

Nice cab. Much as I love classic standups - and repros like Spacies are coooooool :)
I think I'm gonna have to go a bartop, mini, cocktail route.
I'm totally new to it all-But wanting to do it on the cheap-PS/2 keyboard hack, etc (masochist-LOL).
Got an old ex-work DELL P4 XP PC as the guts-and having to go LCD for monitor.
Just looking for tips. Main issues are a low power EASY front end-and some sort of power solution...
I keep reading about Smart powerboards that'll control everything-but can't find in NZ + look pricey(ish).
Saw someone talk about autologoff if power lost???? How? LOL.

You are welcome to come to my place and build one. I have all the tools etc and can help you with your MAME setup. I have built a few bartops :) As for the smart board thing, I wouldn't bother with one of those. Once you fire up the PC the LCD starts anyway and if you have speakers inside just just ones which have a physical ON/OFF button (most do). I wouldn't over-read too much about MAME cabs if you know what I mean :)

Cocktails take up 3 times the footprint of an upright.

Yeah I'll be at Willies :)

Nothing much happening on the cabinet yet as the weather has been too crap to build it (no room in the shed). I have to make one change to the design photos above but its minor. It shows the top part of the control panel @ 177mm but its a bit too big IMO so I am going to make mine @ 150mm. That's about it sadly.

I know now that all the art I have fits the cabinet ;)

Nice day today so I shot off to buy the large sheets of MDF. Bunnings was $65 per sheet and a 10 minute drive to another place has the sheets for $39. I grabbed two of those and headed back home.

First up I laid the template on the full sheet and traced it out:

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0758Medium.jpg

I cut both sides with a jigsaw. When you use a jigsaw its almost impossible to get the panels the same on both side so I clam them together and sanded them so they are both a perfect match:

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0759Medium.jpg

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0760Medium.jpg

I'll skip the boring bit of blocking, glueing, stapling and screwing the panels together as there are quite a few threads on this and we'll move on to the good bits :) So I managed, in between visitors and taking the dogs for a walk and got the cab assembled and primed:

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0761Medium.jpg

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0763Medium.jpg

Hopefully tomorrow I will get the coin door hole cut, get the back panel behind the screen fitted, tidy a couple of things up and have it painted and the decals on. That's a big hopefully but we'll see :)

Into it this morning. Weather is still ok :)

Made the glass and control panel support:

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0768Medium.jpg

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0767Medium.jpg

Got measurements and angle sorted for the panel behind the screen so cut that and fitted it:

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0766Medium.jpg

Cut the coin door hole, tidied up any uglies on the sides and re-primed the cabinet and then sanded it flat. I don't have too much black paint left so I mixed a bunch of other paint and sprayed it on the areas that are getting decals. Quite a fitting colour :)

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0769Medium.jpg

So that's where I am at. Just having some lunch and letting that paint dry before I go and spray another coat. Then I will spray the black on the inside parts around the monitor, speaker panels etc.

:)

spacies
19th August 2012, 12:25 PM
I put on a heavy coat on the sides and front and just now I sprayed the black:

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0770Medium.jpg

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0771Medium.jpg

Its more a a very dark metallic grey but it looks minty :)

Coffee time while that dries and then a big clean up in the garage to clear some space to apply the decals. Decals need to be done inside so any breeze doesn't blow up dust while you are applying them.

Sweet!

19th August 2012, 04:53 PM
Decals on baby!

I do my decals wet so I put the cab its back and sides when doing them.

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/Ms%20Pacman/IMAG0777Medium.jpg

One of my favourite parts is hammering the t-molding on. It really highlights the profile of the cab :) The second side is drying now and I'll go down there after dinner and trim the excess off.

Happy with today's efforts :)

Excuse the crappy pics. Fluorescent lights and phones don't mix :p

Fantastic! It looks so much like 'the real thing'.

Cheers :)

Got a little bit done just now.

Managed to fold up the CP and cut the holes which align with the art:

Gave everything a good grind and sand then painted it before applying the decal. Sun came out so just whipped it outside for a couple of pics:

You'll notice in the pic the different art on the control panel compared to the original Ms Pac. I never liked how it was just chopped off and the front of the control panel was black. I did that new art about 5 years ago for someone on BYOAC.

Next will be to do the marquee and bezel then start the internals.

Getting closer.

Cheers Dez,

I have some pink buttons and joy knob but i kinda like the contrast with the black. Not sure on the start buttons too. But that's minor stuff :)

Always like to follow the video builds and restorations on AA.

I find the quality of the work you guys show is far ahead of the pinball guys.

Have really enjoyed watching this, top shelf work there Spacies

Thanks mate. Its been a while since I have built a cab and I have really enjoyed it again. I have wanted to build a Ms Pac for years (obviously since the start of this thread was four years ago) as I always knew it would be a good looker and she is! I keep going downstairs to have a look, ha ha and I wish you all could see it in person because it just looks so dam nice. My previous fave was a tie between Defender and Donkey Kong but I now have a new fave! I can't wait to put on the bezel and marquee.

I'll sneak another look before I go to bed :)

Looks great Mal, I like how you have improved on the original by continuing the artwork from the cpo.

Well after 4 years of wanting to build a Ms Pacman, I am calling this done!

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/spacies/IMAG0791Medium.jpg

I am pretty happy with this. I am going to sell this and build another as a keeper as I would like to change a couple of minor things for my own machine.

Thanks for everyone who followed and commented.

Cheers

Mate that's come up beautifully!

My only question is what sort of coin door and mech is that. It looks like Ultimarc'c mini coin door but kind of mounted vertically?

Cheers,
brad

Thanks mate.

The coin doors are ones I got from China, same as the mech. That's one of the changes I am going to change for my own machine. I have a brand new wider door which is closer to the original.
