View Full Version : New Project - Jukebox

I bought an old lucky ticket machine off ebay last week.
Havent been able to get it to go, so im thinking ill make a jukebox out of it. (Only cost me $30) :)

The side panels have got a bit of water damage - and because its chipboard , some missing areas where its been chipped away , or picked at by bored ppl. So i might just get new MDF and copy the shape of it.

All the fluro lights work , so they are salvageable, and ill just have to make new designs in the marquee areas.

Im trying to decide which jukebox program to run in this. Currently mucking around with skjukebox .. found some others , but will get to them later. The program will have to run on one of my old comps, tho.

I did a lot of looking at jukebox software. I couldnt go past SJK. Even though hes stopped development I just love teh simplicity and the non windows look. Just havent got round to starting the wall mount

I settled for SKJukebox after trying a few in my MAME cab. That was a couple of years ago. I use a trackball to select songs and the joystick to move screens. Are you going to set it up with buttons? I want to build a dedicated Jukebox and was wondering what the best input selection would be.

AdamC

I think i will go with buttons to control it .... didnt think about a track ball.... might be another option.

Ill probably get one of those cheep keyboard encoders - cant remember the name of it right now ... (im at work , and left my brain at home):evil

Anyone using those Logitech 2.1 Speakers - R20 .. would they be any good in this situation .. i can probably replace the small speakers with some off an old hifi we have laying around.

:EDIT - found the name of the encoder - TOKN MEDIA KB10

**** the PC speaker setup for a jukebox, overkill for an arcade cab, but underdone for a jukebox.
I am going the car audio route, heaps of cheap bits here. (dudes are upgrading there system all the time the second hand parts are worth it it)A cheap AMP (everywhere) A big sub in the front bottom, L/R's down the side . I am going to make my baby shake!!! I want it to move! :lol

I got a touchscreen overlay for my machine and I got some software called Partytime Jukebox. It does everything and it's realy friendly on pc's with a low end cpu as it's just a frontend for Winamp.

SKjukebox in my dedicated system.

ALL LED lit button controls.

Logitech X230 Cpeaker system which works a treat!

If you are running an older pc I would highly recommend DOSCAB (http://webpages.charter.net/celamantia/jukebox/)
easy to use and a few diffrent skins to try it also has touchscreen support and its FREE
I have updated my touchscreen running XP to something else slips my mind at the moment

I agree. SK Juke is simple and easy.

The only prob I have is when you have lots of albums (over 600 on my machine) getting from "B" Albums to "M" albums can be slow.

The jump and find features dont quite suite my 640 x 480 res and control panel layout!

Good luck with your project though!

Brad

I have 3000 albums and have 2 buttons labelled with Arrows an A ----> Z

Sorted by Artists you jump from Letter to Letter forwards or backwards so it's not too bad.

I guess it depends on how many albums/songs you have to manage. I have over 1300 albums so those cheaper frontends won't handle it too well.. lol..

Speaking of jukeboxes I managed to get myself a Computer burning robot with 4 cdrom drives and can pluck a cd from a tray of over 300.. so that's pretty funky.. Pitty the unit weighs about 60kg. Hardly portable.

David_AVD
18th December 2007, 10:45 AM
I've got a couple of Denon 200 disc (2 drawers of 100) players here but I'll be going the PC/HDD route when I build mine. We used to service a fleet of several hundred of these players up until a few years ago! They're pretty cool and have two independent CD platters.

I checked out DWJukebox and it certainly looks the part. About the only problem I can see so far is that it won't recurse directories by itself. You can specify multiple directories (I think) but that won't help if each album is in it's own directory as you'd have to keep editing the ini file each time you added a new album. I tried pointing it to the higher level directory but it just baulks saying it can't find any music files. Can anyone confirm this?

Scratch this. Just tried it on another machine and it works fine. Not sure what the problem is/was on the laptop.

Hmmm, I'm giving DWjukebox another go too as it kept crashing on the old hardware...

I'm using the default/classic skins, but I'm getting a song name 'above and below' in every section, with the word 'album' or 'mp3' in the middle. Does anyone know how I can set it to display the artist as well as the song name?

David_AVD
22nd December 2007, 09:04 AM
Mine displays correctly. Do the tracks all have id3 tags? If not, it may be using the file name as the title.

dmworking247
22nd December 2007, 12:20 PM
I've realised its getting the artist name from the folder name... not from the ID3 tag or the filename. I've tried with ID3 on AND off in the .ini file, but I cant get the artist to display...

All of my MP3's are pretty much dumped into one folder

any ideas?

David_AVD
22nd December 2007, 03:42 PM
Mine are done as one folder per album. Are you sure your files have id3 tags? Is this the Windows or DOS version? See below:

# UseID3 indicates whether to use ID3 for song
# identification. If UseID3 is set to False, it will
# assume the filename is the name of the song and set the
# artist and album based on the folder structure. Since
# DOS does not use long filenames, if ID3 support is
# disabled the database should be created on a Windows
# system.

UseID3 = True

AdamC
22nd December 2007, 06:46 PM
Dale , how about using Mp3tag ?

It will read all your mp3's and show you what is inside the ID3 and you can sort the mp3s that way.
Its good for batch renaming too.

dmworking247
22nd December 2007, 08:14 PM
Thanks guys... I figured out that when I first built the songlist, I had id3 = False, which builds the 'song name' from the filename but the artist from the folder name (a little dissapointing that you cant have more syntax options).

The issue was that when you change it to id3 = True and restart, it doesnt actually rebuild the song list from scratch... I needed to delete the jukebox.db file and then rebuild it from scratch... and now it looks right. The program needs a 'force rebuild' option.

Thanks for the suggestion of MP3Tag, I'll use that to clean up some of the songnames.

Well I've started building this afternoon.

Only going off the traced outline of the old ticket machine , and a few random measurements, i've finished the outside of the machine.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1778Small.jpg...http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1779Small.jpg

I've had to make it the same width as im using some of the original parts that were holding the fluros and artwork.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1775Small.jpg This is the base , where a metal kickboard was , but it looks like ive thrown that out with the rubbish :tomato so ive had to make it all MDF.

Thats a nice start... sure is going to be an eyecatching jukebox.

Those cuts look pretty neat, are they sanded already? Are you going for a 'replica' of the machine in your first post or is it going to have a more modern theme/artwork?

AdamC
8th January 2008, 03:28 PM
Thanks , DM.
No, those pics were done just after i cut all the panels, I only sanded the wood the other day.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1794Small.jpg
This is the original artwork which is still stuck to the glass- Ive kept it on to give me an idea on how its going to look as I go along.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1795Small2.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1796Small.jpg

The monitor mount is installed. The monitor will sit behind another pane of glass, which is held in place by the CP, and the piece of aluminum holding the top glass.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1798Small1.jpghttp://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/Kickboardidea1.jpg
In the lower panel and kickboard , I was thinking of putting some checker plate on it. As in Lexmarks (http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php?t=11099) cabinet.
The blue circle is a 12" Plasma Plate - which activates on sound and touch.
These are from McIntyreImports (http://www.mcintyreimports.com.au) - where they have a few different types of USB dance mats .. but dont tell DM :badgrin

Thanks DM.
It was a good score getting that old ticket machine. I got a lot of stuff off of it... fluros, glass, wheels, heaps of wire , and some microswitches.

Im thinking of doing something simillar to lexmarks mame cab - putting aluminium strips underneath. Its going to give it more strength underneath, as I can see the MDF wearing and more possibly flareing out on the bottom. (After a lot of use- down the track)
I'll probably run strips along the back 2 sides too , so if I have to take it to partys , I can lay it down in the back of my ute.
The aluminium wont look out of place , as im painting it silver anyway , and having some silver checker plate on the front panel.

Brad
10th January 2008, 11:27 AM
To stop wear on the bottom, I put mine of lockable wheels. Cost bugger all at Super Cheap Auto.

I then blinged it by putting in Blue Cathode Ray tubes in the base to give that neon blue ricer glow ;)

PROGRESS !!!! :):)

Managed to get MaLa working with both programs today. Had to stuff around a bit with batch files .. but finally got there.

So after the computer starts .. MaLa will start up straight away , then SKJukebox will start automatically.

I also recieved the plasma plate the other day , so tomorrow I will get more MDF and install the plate, finish the rest of the panels , and the back door.

Having the rest of the week off will make this project get wrapped up nice and quick. :D:D

I spent the afternoon finishing off the panels on the jukebox today.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1808Small.jpg
The computer has its own shelf now , was thinking of putting it on the bottom level, as its pretty heavy for a little pc, but the subwoofer has to sit on the bottom, as i have to cut a hole for the sound to come out.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1806Small.jpg
The plasma plate panel was a bit tricky, had to put an angled cut on the top part, as the buttons on the control panel will come close it.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1804Small.jpg

Ive puttied all the new screw holes , and the whole thing is ready for its last coat of undercoat. Ill do that tomorrow before we go out and buy paint.

I completed all the painting today , I used a spray can of metallic blue which I had leftover from restoring a ticket machine I bought off ebay.

I installed the fluro light in the top area, but I still need to design a marquee for it tho.

The speaker grills were made while I was waiting for the paint to dry, they are just a piece of 3mm painted black with some material over the top of it.

It was a big hit at my party.. ill be using it at a 21st party next month, too.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/IMG_0335Medium.jpg
Took me about 4 hours to wire up all the buttons and get all of them tested and programmed in properly. Bit of a tight fit to get the CP in , as i didnt leave too much room between the front and the monitor panel.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/IMG_0340Small.jpg
If i make another, ill make sure i bring the front panel out another 20-30mm. :unsure
Bad news - the computer doesnt like the plasma plate being so close to it. As soon as I turn the plate on , it makes the jukebox program flip pages all the time , and you cant enter song numbers into it.
I think it could be the IPAC, as im pretty sure it didnt do it when i didnt have that plugged in the other day.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/IMG_0341Small.jpg
The screen and checker plate is sitting behind a sheet of glass. Had to get 2mm grinded off one side , as i made the width of the panels slightly too narrow.
The edging is done with some metallic spray paint I had leftover from a ticket machine I restored. Was thinking of t-moulding , but this was the cheeper way. Came up good, tho. Kept with the metallic theme.

Put a blue neon fluro tube behind the plasma plate panel to shine down across the kickboard.

If it's interference getting into the switch inputs, you could try adding a 0.01uf (10n) 50V capacitor across each of the switches. This may filter it enough to help. Certainly won't hurt it.

Brad

It plugs into its own 12V 1000mA Power adapter which is plugged into a 6 point power board with everything else in the cab.
My friend thought about having it plugged double-adaptor'ed to the power pack :unsure:unsure

The only other option is to hack a keyboard and do without the IPAC , as it worked fine without it.

Is hacking a keyboard easy ? Can anyone do it for me ?? lol :lol

Brad
4th February 2008, 08:13 AM
So it pulses using a sound beat detection? I thought it plugged into your PC. You've tried putting it on a separate powers source to try and isolate it?

Hacking a keyboard is fairly easy. The trick is to have a very small soldering iron tip otherwise it's a pain in the arse.

Have you tried shielding the IPAC using some foil or something behind the plate?

Sounds to me like its getting electricial interference from the plasma plate..

Can you take the plate out and move it (plugged in) further and further away from the cabinet to see if that reduces the symptoms?

Ive just tried the foil - no luck.

Tried plugging the plate adaptor into a seperate lead - no luck.

But works fine when the IPAC isnt plugged in.

So it looks like ill have to buy a solderer and hack a keyboard. Havent soldered for over 15 years !

Sounds like less soldering than a keyboard hack?

Keyboard hacks seem troublesome, and ghosting is a pain, although for a jukebox the ghosting shouldn't be a problem.

Still a PITA though.

Honestly you want to stay away from a keyboard hack. I have one in mine. It's slow.......I have a minipac ready to go in it for my re-build.

Ive been fiddling around with it today.. and I think Ive discovered a workaround.
I wrapped the ipac with a bit of paper (no short circuiting) lol and a few layers of alfoil.
I took the plate out from the cab and fired up the jukebox.
I turned on the plate (which was sitting on the floor) and moved it closer to its position in the cab. When it got to about 10 cms from the front of the cab , the interference started.

Then i tried it without the alfoil on the ipac .. and got to 2-3 cms from the plates mounting position ! :unsure

So it looks like ill try moving the ipac up away from the where it is now .. but this will need a bit of an extension of the wires.

Stay tuned .....

:lol

Bet ya he didn't pay $150 ea for those at the auction. Looks to me he brought em specifically for ebay, of course maybe the story is true as I'm a glass half empty kinda guy when it comes to these things.

I think they're interesting but with all those fans would be a noisy bugger, also I would worry about how reliable they are.

For the price, I reckon not. Better off going to somewhere like GameDude and picking up a couple of those ex gov computers.

Ok , whats been happening on this project?
Not too much, just adding songs to the jukebox, and more songs to Ultrastar Deluxe.
I have put in a few more buttons up on the top of the cabinet, just an UP and DOWN button for some of the menus in the emulators, and another EXIT button for the jukebox program - I didnt want people to hit the exit button accidentally if it was on the front of the cab.

All that needs to be done is- Install some kind of extractor fan .. its pretty much a sealed unit atm.

I finally designed a marquee last night , and got it printed thismorning. Its just a simple design of a few images i googled and threw together.

I wanted to show the 3 main aspects of the machine...

Jukebox
Ultrastar Deluxe - Karaoke
Frets on Fire - Guitar Hero clone

And the name ..... PARTY STARTER

I spent a few hours on the jukebox today , getting the last little jobs done on it.

I bought a pc fan and grill , which i mounted above the door.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1906Small.jpg

I also made up a volume control knob, which saves me putting the controller box for the logitech speakers (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/232&cl=au,en) on top of the jukebox.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1897Small.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/adamndeb/DSCN1904Small.jpg

Directions can be found here... (http://web.archive.org/web/20061025182800/http://www.oscarcontrols.com/volume/index.shtml) (DMworking247 has done this to his MAME cab , too) (Thats where i found out how to do it)

I DID try to fix the problem of the plasma plate affecting the IPAC and pressing the '9' button by itself , by using tin foil and covering the plate from behind.
It worked !!! ... but then whenever i escaped from the jukebox program , it would send itself back to it, and the mouse wouldnt work properly (Right-clicking on SKJukebox and selecting NEXT SONG)
Ill tackle that another day.

Dude, how did you get the numerical numbers in your buttons? did you print them out or did you buy them like that?

I've been really inspired by your project and when i've finished my Cocktail cab i'm going to make one too

To get around the volume knob problem, i've got an high-end Kenwood amplifier. It's from an old home stereo (when they used to make amplifers out of steel).
It's a little beast, and i'm thinking of mounting it inside and having the knobs pass though the cabinet to the outside - then I can also control the EQ

AdamC
14th August 2008, 06:44 AM
When I ordered them through Chris at Ozstick , I asked him very nicely if he could print the numbers for me.
The buttons pop apart and you can use photo paper to print labels for them.

Im actually ordering a keyboard encoder from Mat at http://www.gamesroomarcade.com/
Hopefully this will fix my problem im having when i turn the plasma plate on.

ah! thanks for that ;) They look really good, the font used for the numbers ties in with the rest of the buttons and looks very authentic.

It's amazing the amount of interference the plasma plate has caused - especially all the weird things happening when you turn it on. Where is it's power source coming from? has it got it's own dedicated power pack or are you running a 12v feed out of your computer?

I'm surprised the tin foil didn't work, when they put the shielding in guitars electrics and stuff, they use an adhesive foil and it basically encapsulates all the wiring - it works really well, though it's just to get rid of hum & noise coming though when you use it with an amp.

It has its own 12V transformer.
It seems the interference is coming from the box of the unit (sitting behind the glass) , as i had it going and held it way outside the jukebox, then gradually brought it in to its position.

Did you try winding the 12V cable (as many times as will neatly fit) through a toroid? Do it right near the plate end of the cable. It may stop the 12V cable from acting as an aerial. But, like I said 6 months ago, a small capacitor across each switch input will probably sort it too.

I think i had one of those toroid things , but wasnt sure how to use it properly.(how any times to wind it, or where to position it).
I might still have it somewhere , i spotted it the other day when i was rummaging through stuff.

Yeah David , if i wasnt moving the weekend of Burras meet , i wouldve brought the unit down then and we couldve done the capacitor thing.

The encoder is ordered anyway , so it will go in and the other one I'll use in my next cab thats underway.

I've been thinking of making a jukebox for sometime and yours is VERY cool. How abt with the volume control using a remote as I have noticed with jukeboxes in pubs the bar staff can often turn them up or down by using a remote. How would you do this with a pc jukebox?

AdamC

Most later Creative soundcards have a break out box like the Audigy2 ZS which is fully remote control - the other option is to get a power amp receiver that has a remote control - you see them in Cash Converters all the time

I added an 8n2 (value not critical) capacitor on each switch input to ground. (right at the PCB)

This is to (in theory) dampen any interference the button wiring is picking up from the plasma plate.

The fix seemed to work but only time will tell.

Its a 17" LCD screen , Crafty.

Heres a few pics of the juke running Frets On Fire.

So just after 2 years since I started this project , I can happily say it is finally finished with what I planned on installing into it.

The only thing that might be needed is more hard drive space if I have video clips in the jukebox.. i currently have 12 GB of vids , but that will probably increase next time the jukebox Dvds come by.

For mine I was going to use my 15 (probably more like 20 as I keep forgetting how old I am) year old stereo, stereo amp (80 w) and and full size speakers (Peterson 200 Peak), but I am thinking these will be too heave and passably make the box not transportable enough (as I'm sure friends and family will wont to borrow it).

After working on a few of the Centerlink Kiosks with touchscreens, and installing the E_Touch jukebox program (which I paid for a registered copy), I decided to go and buy a touchscreen conversion kit for my juke.

Doing this made the numeric buttons on the CP obsolete, so I had to rebuild the CP and leave the ESC, ENTER and the LEFT & RIGHT buttons in it to operate the menu and Ultrastar Deluxe.
Luckily I still had a keyboard encoder I bought ages ago (similar to this) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Arcade-Mame-PS-2-Keyboard-Encoder-Key-Matrix-Type_W0QQitemZ190332783687QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_15?hash=item2c50b7cc47&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) so I installed that, and took out the Ipac to be used in another project.

I also threw in a second video card to run video clips on, and all thats left to do is get a sheet of clear perspex made to go around the screen. :)

I also had to throw some pokie games into it too, as the Mrs really liked the ones I installed into one of the kiosks.

So I guess the jukes pretty much done. The only thing I could probably do to it is a new speaker setup, but the ones I have in it will do for a while. :)

I connected up my spare LCD monitor onto the juke thisarvo. Its sitting where the fluro tube and the marquee were.
As you can see, I had to rebuild the CP, as I didnt need as many buttons anymore. Lucky I had the roll of CP overlay I bought from Daics :023:

Had a few fun and games getting the second monitor to run in E-Touch, as I had the second monitor set up as sitting above the main monitor in Windows display properties. I found out that E-Touch only likes the screens next to eachother, and roughly the same resolution. :unsure
