Time Tunnel 20" Taito Cocktail

Recommended Posts

I rescued this off Gumtree last week.

The seller thought it would be a good idea to strip the cab and powder coat the legs and base purple and turquoise.

He made no further progress over the next 10 years apart from losing all of the internals.

The first thing was to get rid of the purple and turquoise so the legs were sanded back and painted silver and the base has been sandded and painted satin black on the inside.

I'll let that cure and then sand the outside back and also give it a coat of satin black.

I have no idea what the cab was originally and only have the P1/P2 start button plate and control panels to go off.

The control panels are the same as Jungle King but have two button holes from the factory.

Ideally I'd like to find out what it was originally then restore it back to original.

Something similar to this vintage/style.

Otherwise I have a spare Defense Command PCB which I might put in it and make it a Defender.

Those legs look brilliant. What paint did you use and is there a trick to applying it?

The legs were powder coated so I just rubbed them back with 800 wet & dry.

If they are rusted and pitted then I'd hit them with a wire brush then start at 40 grit and work your way up to 320 then bog to fill the pitting and sand with 320 again then prime and sand with 600-800 grit (repeat if necessary).

I apply lots of thin coats with a couple of minutes in between each coat then the last coat a little thicker.

Yes mate, I managed to pick it up with a little help from a member in the UK.

It was the PCB on ebay in France.

Try this mob.

Here's their list.

About half way down the first lot. I'm not a 100% sure if that's what they've got or had but it might be worth an email?

I contacted them but they said that list was what they have handled in the past and not a current stock list.

None of what's listed is available.

The Time Tunnel board is exactly the same as Elevator Action so hopefully it's a ROM swap that is needed.

Bugger. At least there's an option to chase up.

I spent a bit of time on the cabinet today.

Cut some pieces of ply to go on the back of the control panels, drilled the holes and mounted the joysticks.

The 1P & 2P start buttons were missing when I bought the cab and are made of unobtanium so I just mounted some standard buttons behind the panel and they do the same job.

Turning to the monitor I went through my spare 20" tubes and matched one up with a Kaga 3-piece chassis. Also fitted a power supply and transformer.

I had an Elevator Action PCB that I was going to put in it until I could sort out some roms for Time Tunnel. I also had a non working Jingle King PCB so I stole the roms from that and added the few jumpers at the P ROM position on the top board (the same as the JK pcb). Fired it up and works perfectly.

So for now it will be a Jungle King until I get the Time Tunnel roms sorted.

Got the PCB fitted and made up a wiring loom...

Had a few games and all is working well except for a few sounds which are very faint.

Next job is to fit the bezel properly and paint a mask on the glass (and give it a clean).

Will get some instruction cards printed off tomorrow.
