I mean like do you have to put the roms on it? Hows this different to an emulator?

The "multiboards" are supplied with ROMs (yes, not technically legal I know).

Boards like the "Pi" do not come with ROMs - you must add them.

These ARE emulators BUT THE HUGE DIFFERENCE is that they are "embedded" designs and NOT PC's running emulation.

FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR more reliable and FAR easier for a novice to set up.

With the raspberry pi jamma setup does it work with a 6 button per player in a 2p setup? Does it run retro pie or something else?

It does 2P 6 button setup. The software comes with the board, dee2er puts it together.

How would it compare to using an ipac2 and retro pie or the like?

I'm trying to get a sense of what kind of setup to use

So would a multi board be best or run with a pi?

      I prefer Pi.

You can run any emulator you want, pick your own roms and customise the front end any way you like.

240p out of the Pi is very nice. No screen tearing which plagues most multiboards as 1) they're primarily designed for an lcd screen and 2) have shitty emulator configurations.
