Joker Poker Restoration

Recommended Posts

During the week I had time to repair the woodwork on the head box door and also sanded back a paint run on the front part of the cabinet that I hadn't noticed before. Saturday all sprayed and speckled. No pictures as it looks the same as the last ones.

Half day sickie today and I managed to finish the stencils on one side of the cabinet. A bit of unintentional over spray on a couple a spots but not too bad overall (it is my first attempt at making my own stencils :)).

I didn't noticed at the time but the black stencil is out at the bottom of the cards, I will have to correct the stencil and respray that little bit and it will then be good for the other side.

I also put the red stencil on one side of the head box on the Sunday, but just after painting, some plastic fell on it and when I took it off a few patches of paint came off with it. It doesn't look pretty, but I'm in the process of fixing it up. No pics of that mess as it was my fault and it p*ssed me off after all the work on it :(

Now with this weather I can at least do a bit of painting in the afternoons so hopefully have the painting finished soon.

Good spraying conditions over the last few days and I managed to finish spraying the main cabinet, yet to finish the back box.

I corrected the gap between the bottom of the cards.

There is still a small bit of white showing but it's a lot better than before.

The other side and the front came out a lot better as well, I think.

Now I'll give it till Friday to harden up then I'll start putting it back together.

as you know trevor i have been sitting on a project joker poker for about 6 months..seeing your work here is really pushing me to pull the pin and bring her home and place it in the restoration queue.

If your JP needs a repaint, I'm more than happy to help with the stencilling, not that you need help :)

I can provide my stencils at least.

Over the last 2 nights I finished painting the head box so now all the painting is finished :D

The picture quality is not too good, using the mobile flash didn't really come out.

The pictured side is the side that I stuffed up, but after an extra bit of work it looks fine.

I can still see the difference as I know where to look, but I don't think anyone else will notice. Anyway I'll put that side next to the wall :)

I spent a lot of hours today putting the cabinet back together and now when I look at it, it doesn't look like I've done much?

Removing rust from many brackets etc takes a lot of time, more than I realised.

I have the back box put back together and on the cabinet and new lock installed. I still have to finish cleaning the backbox internals, mouse crap again :(

I rebuilt the chime unit and have installed it, removed the rust from front of the legs using the foil method, just have to do the back of the legs now.

Thanks to @illawarra_steelers for supplying the pair of legs I was missing.

Next task is to get the legs finished and installed then i'll start on the front door.

Hey Trev, I might just give you my Joker Poker to do? That was a pretty good find and all the parts? The backglass and playfield are really good? Also, whats the foil method? Do you just rub alfoil over the legs and that gets the rust off?

Hi Wazza, You can give me your JP but it's taken me 6 months to get this far, so you might be waiting awhile. I can then play it while I rebuild mine :)

The playfield needs work as it was very dirty but the back glass was OK.

The foil method is just water and foil rubbing with the grain to clean the rust off the legs and I will use it on the door as well, it comes up OK.

I finished removing the rust on the legs and on they went.

Cleaned up the door and did a bit of panel beating, replaced the lock, the replay button and the red coin entry plates. Luckily I have the original envelope that came with the machine and there were 2 X 25cent unused labels that I could use in the plates.

The sticker that was on the bottom right of the door pitted the metal and I couldn't clean it off that well. It looks alright in the picture but on a different angle it stands out. Can't do much about it I guess, I thought of brushing the metal but I'll think about that some more.

When I cleaned up the tilt unit I noticed that it wasn't wired up and the wires have just been joined together. I checked on my Gottlieb EM's but they only have to wires and this machine has 3. So if someone has a system 1 machine could you please help in identifying which terminals the 3 wires need to go? There are 3 wires, blue & white, orange & black, Black. To make it easy there are 3 places they can go, left centre & right. Any help would be great.

Finished work on the main board, removed all the components sanded the wood to remove the stains from the mouse crap, then cleaned and put back on. Put in new fuses as the ones that were there were either dead or the wrong ones.

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/Gizzy_Judge/Joker%20Poker/2016-12-03%2015.33.01_zps7tqwqhj1.jpg

Same goes for the back board, sanded to remove the stains and cleaned up every thing else. Removed the globes but not sure which ones are flashers (possibly the one in the cardboard circles), any idea where I can find that out?

The new Pascal board is in place. I have also replaced all the edge connectors which took me a few hours.

Thanks to @defender1980 for helping me identify where some loose wires went.

Also removed the rust on the lockdown bar and the shooter (new springs etc), both installed.

I have to work on the apron now and put on the side rails, I waited till last to put those on to stop them getting damaged.

Then the only thing left to do is the playfield. Have been putting it off but now almost nothing else to do.

you can put in #455s where ever you want..but basically for joker poker, yes they would of gone in where those white cylinder are.

Thanks Tony.

I didn't think of flashers when I did my last order, bummer. Will have to try and find some locally.

how many do you need? pm your postal address.

Thanks for the Globes Tony, got them :)

Update:

Last couple of days have been working on the playfield on and off.

First thing I noticed was that most of the inserts were sunken, so using the advice from AA members, I went and got a hair dryer and socket. But, after the first one came out by just pushing it with my fingers, I didn't need the hair dryer and they all came out really easily.

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/Gizzy_Judge/Joker%20Poker/2016-12-10%2012.33.22_zpscuq18svi.jpg

I cleaned up the back of the inserts, to get rid of the years of muck, then flatten them out using boiling water. First time trying this and it worked really well.

I have now glued a few back in just to make sure I'm doing it right and then i'll just wait for the glue to dry then check it out.

The next thing was to fix up the playfield under the pop bumpers. In my last restore I just put a coloured mylar ring over the damaged area, but this time I thought I would try and fix it up.

Before:

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/Gizzy_Judge/Joker%20Poker/2016-12-10%2013.40.10_zpstlgt1gir.jpg

I used some wood putty to fill in the worn area, sanded it back and then masked the area.

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/Gizzy_Judge/Joker%20Poker/2016-12-11%2010.05.53_zpsnquovk3r.jpg

I then used the air brush that I got from last xmas, and after working out how to use it, painted the area. I think I need more practise with the brush so I might as well practise on this. With the paint I'm using if you make a mistake you just wipe it off with water and try again.

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/Gizzy_Judge/Joker%20Poker/2016-12-11%2014.31.36_zpsb5aielcw.jpg

Off with the mask and it doesn't look too bad. The red is a little darker and I have to fix a black line on the left side but that's no big deal.

Close Up:

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/Gizzy_Judge/Joker%20Poker/2016-12-11%2014.44.50_zpsvghnb1wb.jpg

There is a bit of an edge on the new paint so I might have to hit it with a bit of wet and dry after a day or two, maybe?.

First time playfield touch and first time air brushing and I'm happy with the results :D
