Joker Poker Restoration

I think it under the coin pricing , change the pricing until it is on free play.

I didn't see anything mentioning coin pricing, but I did find this:

Set the game to FREE PLAY mode

This setting belongs to menu ‘2’ DIPSW.

11. Press [TEST]: entering main menu

12. Press [TEST] 2 more times: menu DIPSW is displayed

(number «2-» in CREDIT)

13. Press [CREDIT]: entering menu DIPSW

14. Press [TEST] several times to scroll through all available settings till DIPSW 17

(number «17» in CREDIT)

15. Press [CREDIT] to scroll through the available values till «FREE PLAYS» is displayed

across PLAYER1 and PLAYER2 displays.

16. Press [TEST] until menu EXIT DIPSW is displayed

(«--» in CREDIT)

17. Press [CREDIT] to quit and return to main menu

18. Press [TEST] until menu EXIT MENUS is displayed

(«--» in CREDIT)

19. Press [CREDIT]: exits main menu, resumes normal game operation

(if a game was in progress, it ends immediately)

Looks like they might have change how it works now

For my early Bally I just made a bracket to hold a momentary switch behind the coin reject button that I wired to the coin input 1 switch.

Advantages are the knocker still goes off when you beat the machine.

On the early Ballys another way is to just add another switch behind the credit button so when you push the credit button, it also puts up a credit but doing it that way means any credits earned will continue to add up and the machine will soon be at maximum credits preventing the knocker going off should you score a credit so I went the reject button route.

I also stripped out all the coin mech brackets off the front door. Let's face it, the machine is never going to have coins put through them again.

What that gave me was a super clean front door when I tidied up the wiring and a nice flat surface to put a copy of the game data.

The Joker Poker is ready to go now after I finished adjusting the flippers, pop bumpers, out hole and a few other bits and pieces. Basically the things you really can't test properly without power.

The targets are a bit hard to knock down but hopefully once I start playing it a bit they will become easier. I have also set it to the Wizard preset so that all new features from the Pascal board are activated. I also put on Free Play and just have the change the replay scores to match the card I have (once I work out how).

The only outstanding problem I have is that the lights in the back box are causing the fuse to blow. The flashing lights are fine but all the others lights that highlight the back glass are out. When I first started the pin all the lights came on but after about 5 seconds the fuse blew.

No quite sure where to look to solve this one?

I have a globe in every spot, is that too many lights ?

The fuse is a 7 1/2 amp slow blow and I'm running 25 #47 globes.

Not sure how many amps the globes use but I though it would have been fine :unsure

Update..

Just had a look on Marco website and the #47 globes uses .15amps, so in total that would be under 4 amps, so shouldn't be a problem?

Unusual it is backbox lights causing this, normally it is a solder blob that has made it's way into a playfield light socket but in saying that, I have had sockets that just fail and short out.

You can first take out all the bulbs and see if the fuse blows. If it blows cut the common wire that goes to each of the sockets probably in roughly the middle of the string.

With no bulbs in, put your meter on continuity setting and see which half has the short.

Once you work out which side of the string has the short have a good look for the obvious like terminals touching etc.

If you still have no joy, start cutting the effected string into shorter lengths till you isolate it down to the socket.

If once you take out all the bulbs and it doesn't blow the fuse, proceed to put in one bulb at a time. I have seen faulty bulbs before with a short from factory.

Just a tip....when cutting the common make your cuts where you can simply resolder them back together again picking on the common where there is a bit of slack. That way you can just overlap the cut ends and resolder.

Thanks for all that, I'll work my way though it and see how I go :)

Fixed.

I took all the globes out, as suggested, and just ran with the fuse, no problem.

I then put half of the globes back in and still no problem.

I then put those same globes into the other sockets and all good. This also proved that all the sockets were ok.

I then took all of those globes out and started putting in the rest of the globes. I got to the 5th globe and the fuse blew.

A dodgy globe ! I've never had a globe that has blown a fuse before :o

I then replaced the fuse and put in all the globes and a new one and all good :)

Thanks @Autosteve for the help.

Back to the pin now to see if I can fix the out hole as it's a bit weak and takes several attempts to kick the ball out to the shooter.:(

Rare but it does happen. On any bulb it just needs the filament to break off clean and drop into the bottom of the bulb and short across the terminals. Fortunately, the filament rarely breaks off both the terminals though.

I presume you will check the coil and wiring but maybe not the spring. If the spring is to weak, it will absorb the shock required to launch the ball satisfactorily.

I've had this on Gottlieb hole kickers before.

I think the spring is the problem. I took the whole hole kicker unit from another playfield and the spring is rusty and weak, but unfortunately I don't have a replacement. I'm looking around in my bits and pieces for a spare, but no luck finding one yet.

I was just looking on PBR website for the spring for the out hole, which I couldn't find, and I found a section for the System/1 common coils.

http://www.pbresource.com/PinballPool.html (near the bottom of the page)

It has the outhole hole kicker as a A-16570 which is different from the one I have which is a A-5195 (as per the manual).

Just wondering if I could use this one instead and would it give a bit more of a kick?

Is there website where the coils are compared etc?

If you take the spring out and replace it with a solid link,( just use tie wire or something similar), that will confirm if the coil is strong enough. The ball will launch hard that isn't desired on the playfield because it will damage the playfield but in the trough, I can't see that being an issue to get you out of trouble till your proper spring arrives.

Well I ended up finding a spring that was close to the correct size and put that in and it seems to work pretty much every time. There is the odd occasion when it ejects twice, but a lot better and will do for now.

The pin is finished now except for the back glass touch up, but I'll do that when I feel more artistic and after a bit of practise with my paints to see what's best to use. I have had a few games now and even though the targets are still a bit stiff they seems to be getting better. I suppose its to be expected when everything on the playfield in new, it just has to settle a bit :)

I wanted to post some nice pics but photobucket won't let me login with my facebook account at the moment for some reason? I'll try again a bit later.

Now onto the Gottlieb Lawman :D

The Joker Poker has now moved into my games room, which is still only small compared to other members, but is growing about 1 pin every year (takes me about that long to finish restoring them).

I played it for an hour today and it stopped working :(

After a bit of investigation it turned out to be the top flipper coil had imploded blowing the fuse, this was the only original coil left in the machine. Luckily I had a spare and now all fixed again :)

Even though it doesn't have the best looking playfield, it plays really nice, so I might keep the restoration of the spare playfield on the back burner for now.

We could be brothers. Great taste. The difference is you have the great fulfilment of doing them up yourself. Great job mate.

Sold now but great games.

Only exception being you have the Card Whiz (2 player) and I have the Royal Flush (4 player) but same game

Ohh man, it has been a while since I have last seen this kind of a machine. I used to play a lot of it, however since I moved to a new city, I could not find one, moreover, I actually forgot about it. It was probably my first contact with any kind of card games. I still remember when I have first played it. I guess I was something like 12 years old, and I loved this game from the first attempt. I guess, it had a great influence on myself, as I really like gambling nowadays. Right now, due to the fact that all the casinos are closed, I am playing a lot of Slot online games. And you know, I do not regret anything about it. Edited by Wangtang
