yep great effort by peter menzel & his crew, was a top 2 days of pinball.

There were plenty of new faces, & also quite a few familiar from other tournaments.

To anyone who missed out this year, i strongly advise to get there next year as this event can only become bigger & better.

Once again top effort guys..

thanks

I continue to be astounded at the commitment and work that members of the Vice City Players put in to make the ACT Pinball Championship such a great event.

@Zzapp /AKA James did a great job as Tournament Director, moving machines and more. The organisation and scoring was flawless.

@yonky /AKA Pete has made HUGE efforts in co-ordinating/ moving machines and more.

@ladybug /AKA Chrys has made HUGE efforts in co-ordinating/ moving machines and more.

@andtan /AKA Andy has made HUGE efforts in moving machines and marshalling.

@Pseudonymous /AKA Mitch has made HUGE efforts in moving machines and marshalling.

Kim was a great help with moving machines and marshalling.

Pintech Stevie kept ALL tournament machines in operation over the full two days.

Whilst those listed above are highly deserving of praise, so are the many VCP members who kept the tournament running and helped in other roles including supplying machines.

I probably won't remember all the user AA handles and names but will start with-

@Racerbamf

@Chexfxdx

@carbonROD

@DirtyOldMan

@Jules

@Thasaman

@ITmonkey

Geoff

VCP is a not for profit, volunteer run group. It only exists due to the support of its members. Today we gave out $1000 in cash prizes in our tournament and $700 of that went to interstate visitor players. A better group of people could not be found to provide a fun and friendly event. I hope that next year there are more visitors who will appreciate our friendly competition.

2016 ACT Pinball Championship – Wrapup

The 2016 ACT Pinball championship is over for another year. While I nurse the bruises from moving pinnies all weekend, I would like to reflect on what a fantastic weekend of pinball it was for all those involved.

There was a really good vibe, competitors played fair and displayed some great pinball skills. We raised $1,000 of prize money in the 6 hours of qualifying on Saturday, resulting in a prize pool of: 1st place $600, 2nd place $300, and 3rd place $100.

The ACT pinball champion for 2016 is … Paul Jones! Congratulations Paul and well played. The final standings were ….

RANKING - PLAYER

1 - Paul Jones

2 - Erik Miton

3 - Tony Woods

4 - Andrew Craig

5 - Paul Chamberlin

6 - Jose Cimillini

7 - Ted Woods

8 - Adam Barrow

9 - Curtis Sahariv

10 - Paul Higginbotham

11 - Scott Walsh

12 - Duncan Macdonald

13 - Daniel Dobbin

14 - Justin Halstead

15 - Tom Lefebure

16 - Dan Bamford

17 - Alex Visotin

18 - Thomas Chamberlin

19 - Shannon Paull

20 - Tony Marzano

21 - Chrysanthe Psychogios

22 - Richard Ley

23 - Peter Foster

24 - Steve Sahariv

I really enjoyed watching Paul Jones play – quite aggressive but controlled. Thomas Chamberlin (I think he’s only 12 years old!) also anticipated the ball well and had a really relaxed style of playing - a lot of potential there!

It was promising to see that we had 4 members of the Vice City Players (Andy Craig, Chrysanthe Psychogios, Alex Visotin and Dan Bamford) make it through to the finals this year. Andy played really well to make it through to the grand-finals and finish in 4th position. I really felt Andy’s frustration after he “choked” on his own machine, TOMMY – there is nothing worse than choking on your own machine.

It was really great to see some family rivalry throughout the competition with Steve and Curtis Sahariv (Curtis beat his Dad and finished in 9th place overall), Paul and Thomas Chamberlin (Paul beat his son) and Andy and Bianca Craig in the qualifying round (Andy beat his daughter).

The first four games of the grand-final were a close contest between Tony Woods and Paul Jones with Tony winning two (LETHAL WEAPON and TOMMY) and Paul winning the other two (CFTBL and JACKS OPEN). Paul then sealed first place by winning the next two games on TRON LE and EYE OF THE TIGER. As Paul had already won the competition on the sixth game, all the players relaxed a little for the final grand-final game and we cranked up the volume on AC/DC LUCI. It was good to see the players tapping their feet to the AC/DC jukebox while they played.

Last year’s winner, Peter Foster, defended his title and managed to make the finals this year but unfortunately, the silver ball didn’t roll his way on the day and Peter only managed 23rd place. Justin Halstead, who came 3rd last year, also had a difficult time in the finals and finished in 14th place this year.

Eric Miton improved on his performance from last year moving from 5th to 2nd this year. Eric is a fun player and seemed to really enjoy playing in the grand-finals. On more than a few occasions I saw him doing a little victory dance after he completed a good shot.

Tony Woods, improved from 9th place last year to 3rd place this year. This year, Tony qualified in 23rd place and worked his way through the knockout rounds and grand-finals to finish in 3rd place.

Alex Visotin improved from 20th place last year to 17th place this year. Thanks for travelling down to Canberra Alex!

Jose Ciminelli made it through to the finals and finished in 6th place this year.

Ted Woods lost one position from last year finishing in 7th place this year.

The Barrow brothers came down from Wagga and Adam finished in 8th place. A marvellous achievement considering the huge night out with Andrew Z. Adam’s luck was definitely with him on the weekend as he won a bit of money at the casino too! Adam improved from 14th place to 8th place this year. Unfortunately his brother Duane just missed on making the finals this year.

Our only female finalist this year, Chrysanthe Psychogios, managed to finish in 21st position. Well done for taking it to the boys Chrys!

The number of games that Tony Marzano played on JACKS OPEN in the qualifying round almost entitles him to a part-ownership. It worked in the end; Tony made the finals and finished in 20th place.

The old electro-mechanical pinball machines, JACKS OPEN and EYE OF THE TIGER sorted out the competitors with that huge gap between the flippers (don’t we hate that gap!) resulting in some pretty quick game times and some very low scores. WRESTLE MANIA LE and THE WALKING DEAD LE had the longest average game times.

There were a few complaints about the tight tilt setup on LETHAL WEAPON and WRESTLE MANIA LE (thanks Rod!). This can happen at competitions and another reason why competitors need to try and familiarise themselves with all pinnies before a competition.

There seemed to be more issues with the pinball machines this year e.g. stuck balls (JURASSIC PARK, WORLD CUP SOCCER, TRON LE), stuck upper flipper (JURASSIC PARK), broken flipper end stop (CFTBL), loose opto wiring on ball trough and switch issues (POPEYE), loose bulb on playfield (AC/DC LUCI), broken scoring reel (FLYING CARPET). However, due to magic hands of ‘Pintech Stevie’ we were able to resolve every one of them in no time at all.

Finally, it takes a lot to put these events together and I couldn’t have done it without the help of a very friendly crew of dedicated helpers. I would really like to thank the Vice City Players and everyone who made it possible again this year:

Andy Craig, Chrysanthe Psychogios, Mitch Price, Loyzek Cervek, Glenn Silsby, Dan Bamford, Alexander Drakalski, Kim Mckay, Stevie Hyde, Bianca Craig, Julien Greening, Geoff Ellis, Rod Cuddihy, James Todd, Paul Szindler, Michael Cerne, Rob Stein, Milo Kadamus, Andrew Z, and Bruce Colbourne (from AMD).

I also want to thank all of our interstate visitors coming from as far away as Brisbane, Melbourne, Wagga, the Illawarra, and Sydney. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Hope to see you all next year for an even bigger and better 2017 ACT Pinball Championship!

Thanks for the great run down and detail on the event. I genuinely would have loved to make this comp. It was also great you advertised 7 months prior which makes it easier for interstaters to plan ahead.

ACT is truly on the Pinball competition map with the great effort from you and your volunteers.

Cheers

Thanks yonky.

Getting back to the motel room at 4am from the casino was certainly a big night. I though Zed may have had to take my spot in the

finals. Although my brother Duane drove past the entry and i quite literally just jumped out the door in the morning to make the finals

(sorry Zed but i made it).

After playing this event last year i can say the competition was more fierce and always fun. There seemed to better more quality players

than last year (not mentioning any name Paul Jones-damn you brother :D at least the eventual winner knocked me out of the 8.

Good win mate.

Cheers and an awesome effort by all of the Vice City crew. You guys are awesome and fun to hang out with. Just maybe not until

4am in the morning again.

...Refrets aren't cheap, I've had 4 of them but kinda get the feeling I've now got enough meat on the bone to last the rest of my playing days. I hope ya working out. Z

What the fuck insane level of guitar playing are you at that requires four refrets? On the one guitar?

I've been playing properly less than three years on a near vintage guitar. Admittedly 90% of the (20+ hp/w) time has been live on a 10 string in open surroundings without amps or any accompaniment... But it took two years for my frets to become annoying, and another six months to become unplayable.

I'm really sorry I couldn't make your gig. It's rare that work gets in my way of rocking up to a pinball meet.

Glad to read and see that all the efforts from all the good folk led to a stellar get together.

Onya Paul for the win and kudos to all.

Cheers,

G

No worries G, that was 4 refrets on different guitars. I like old Guitars better so they've always had help wearing down the frets.

I'm now looking fir a good lawsuit era japanese strat if anyone has one going....Z

Can't say I do, but I do have a couple that are close. A Japanese Fender Tele from the 80's, and a Takamine Martin lawsuit era 12 string.

Both great quality guitars.
