Best place to buy project pins?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been covered before.

What are some of the best places to look for project machines.

I'm just on the hunt and have been checking ebay/gumtree.

Any specialist sites or places I should check out. I'm in Vic if that helps.

Cheers guys

There isn't really a "best" place to buy them anymore. It's harder to get some project pins than fully restored ones. You have to scour all of the online listings and keep your ear to the ground around here, too. Not really a technique to it, just blind luck at this point!

Unfortunately being new I can't view the for sale section yet :(

then stop lurking and post

surely you can post something once a week

idd also not reccomend a project game for your first machine

nothing more frustrating than a game you cannot get to work

it maybe missing parts you cannot buy, it maybe dammaged (the cabinet) beyond repair, it may require skills or tools you dont have

if you buy a project from a dealer, ask yourself why they did not fix it themselves and then sell it

Listen to uncle Pete. These are wise words. I could post a list of us and every other dealer in Melbourne but you will never see a project that's worth seeing now. They are all as Pete said

90's Dmd machines that need work are tough to find and I wouldn't think there is too many mb, mm or afm that have been in someone's possession and appear on the market and if they did they bring $ not far from a restored one. What pin do you have your heart set on or doesn't the title matter?

Ive got a project pin that id sell.

Williams time warp.

Project pin. Playfield in good condition but some wear, cabinet needs to be re stencilled. GI powers on but i havent gotten around to doing much with it regards the power supply. Comes with a spare set of driver and cpu boards.

$900. Ill get some photos up when i can get to the library or i can send them via phone. My internet is cut off so thats why no pics.

What you would need to do.

Send the boards to Ken to have a look over

re stencil the cab.

After boards fixed then go over coils and get the machine working.

Project project project. Why havent i done it myself and advertise it for say $1700 fixed up. Well time and too many pins to play.

oh i forgot to add. The pros and cons of project machines.

You do learn a lot by going over and over the machine and trying to fix them. SS are a good basic pin to learn on and then move onto DMD pins.

The cons are you end up spending a lot of hours fixing and not playing.

I tend to like to play pins more then fix them but each person has their own likes and dislikes with what they would like to do with their time.

Hey guys,

Thanks so far for all the awesome responses so far!

The reason I'm set on a project machine is that I'm actually more keen to build up a machine even if I need to completely build new boards (I'm an electronics engineer) and redesign the game than actually play it :)

I want to start digging around in a machine and retooling things and it would be a shame to mess with a perfect pin.

I'd rather find a wreck and breath new life into it :)

To be honest what I'm most interested in is finding a more complex machine. The more ramps/scoops/kick outs etc the better.

That's why getting a DMD interests me the most as they generally have the more complex playfields.

Yes real good advice from many here on this topic. I would buy a working pin first, enjoy it and tinker with it if need be. Then move onto a pin that is maybe 80-90% woking but only needs limited work. After you gain some knowledge from doing stuff yourself and plenty of reading on this site and also others, you can get yourself a full project. Allow yourself plenty of time and patience to research and work on pins. Nothing happens overnight.

I have only been tinkering with pins for 2 years. Got myself a nice clean and fully working 80's Bally/Midway game. Started off as real pinball virgin not knowing anything about pins, not even how to remove lockdown bar and glass. Have tinkered a fair bit in my short pinball life and now confident to complete full cabinet restore, strip playfields (top only), replace many parts including soldering, etc. Still unable to work on boards and do playfield touch ups and clear coats but can arrange this to be done if need be. Doing all this is very rewarding and not that hard once you get into it, thanks mostly to advice and posts from members here.

Hope this helps.

There's a guy who runs JetSki City Warehouse in Derrimut and he imports container pins. He had quite a few roughies several months ago. Maybe give him a call to see what's left. He had a Capcom Airborne which would keep you busy if you are looking for lots of mechs etc.

I've been learning that pinball machines don't last long for sale.

Your all so good at snapping them up :)

It all depends on whether it represents value for money and also how rare the game is. Some machines sell on here within minutes, others not so. It all depends on what it is. Research and patience.

Good luck in finding what you are after.

One thing I forgot - I just received this in the mail and worth having if you intend to fix up pins and root around soldering crap. Cost me $15.20 off eBay delivered. Quality is fine for my limited use.
