Playfield Factory Coatings

Hi All. I am just about to seriously look for my first pin. I prefer the dot matrix machines from the 90s, and I am not afraid to have a go at a restoration / renovation. My short list is:

Getaway

Judge Dredd

Twilight Zone

Fish Tales

T2

I know that Getaway (Later models), T2 and FT have Diamond Plate poly urathane coating. I would prefer this finish for a first resto to limit the risk of P/F damage in the cleanup process. (Assume I get a PF with the Diamond Plate intact)

The manuals from JD and TZ say "playfield is coated with a special hardcoat surface.....". Is this basically the same as Diamond Plate, or is it a mylar type protection? If it is a clear coat, then I assume it will sand and polish more or less like Diamond Coat.

Looking forward to having a go!

Dave

Got the $1800 (and a bit more) ready to go. The TZ would more likely be a lucky (VERY lucky) score. I can't quite get to 4K yet. The others, well, lets just see what turns up. TZ just plays so well, I just had to add it to the list.:026:

there are several clears used by Williams

Diamond Plate is a Dupont Special Mix that was supplied by Sunprocess

Do both types behave the same under sanding and polishing Wayne? I am assuming that the finish is pretty much a standard hard Poly urathane finish.

Mate youve said sanding twice know ,get that idea right out of your head ,the cleaning process will just need some elbow grease and novus 2 and a soft rag:D

OK Geoff, consider my bum slapped:) I was more getting at things like the 2000 grit wet and dry treatment Shaggy and Norm gave TZ in their vid. Stuff like sanding down inserts to PF level and the like, not sanding the actual PF coating. More asking if they would be a bit resistant to the odd bit of oversanding from other little jobs around about. I'll probably do a lot more reading before I start cleaning anyway. Now please don't rouse on me any more, I get insecure;)

I would not do a norm and shaggy on a game

buy one that does not need anything done to it

Techniques too harsh Wayne? Sometimes it looked a bit that way to me as a novice, but some stuff looked practical. I'll prob end up running jobs past AA as a matter of course until I learn what I can and can't do. Will definately be looking for a game to clean up at worst, rather than a genuine restoration.

Thanks for the info fellas.

Dave.

Norm and Shaggy's techniques re sanding the diamondcoat are practical but should only be attempted by someone with reasonable knowledge of what they are doing.

Remember, even with 2000 grit, you are still removing some of the diamondcoat. It should be a very very last option. Not for beginners.

Fair enough. I've had experience with car painting (Via years of assisting my father who was a panel beater and spray painter) so experience is not such a problem. Having said that I can see why you would not do it if you could help it. I will be trying for a game in better nick so I should be able to aviod this.
