Cleaning & polishing

Recommended Posts

It is about time I gave the ol' Judge Dredd playfield a polish, but I don't want to cause any damage by using the wrong cleaner or applicator. I have Novus 1, 2 & 3 and a bottle of Mothers California Gold Carnauba Cleaner Wax, are these suitable for cleaning & polishing? :unsure And what should I use to apply the cleaner on the playfield e.g. cotton, polyester, wool etc? :unsure

I'm thinking he wants some more specifics:

To get rid of older wax, grime or if the playfield is dull, then novus 2.

What you need to remember is that novus 2 is an abrasive cleaner/polish. Not very abrasive or agressive, but is still a good idea to get away with using it as little as necessary...

To just generally clean up, then novus 1. Novus 1 is just a cleaner, with no abrasives.

To wax, just like buffing a car. From what I have been hearing carnauba wax is popular. Cleaning wax? Don't know what a cleaning wax is, unless it is a combo detergent/wax - if that is the case leave it well away from the machine...

Cheers

Cool, thanks for the tip :023:

That will do it..

Terry Toweling for the final buff..

Terry Towelling is better than wool? :unsure

Cool, I will try the Novus 2 where required, but in general I think the playfield just needs a good clean & polish so Novus 1 sounds like the right stuff. As for the wax, I bought it from Autobarn. It says on the bottle Safe for clearcoats, removes oxidation & restores colour, but it also states Contains petroleum distillates which doesn't sound good. If this is not the right wax to use, can somebody recommend a good wax to use? :unsure

My procedure for a filthy playfield that is stripped (does not need to be)

Compressed air

Nifti soaked into a rag - few sprays into the rag and then clean

Nifti soaked into a cleaner rag - few sprays into the rag and then clean

Shellite for stubborn dirt - soak into another rag then clean

Novus 2 - yet another rag !

Meguiars carnuba paste wax - make sure it is paste, not liquid ! Use the applicator and Terry Toweling..

If you cannot see your reflection in that playfield then you have cleaned the wrong one :D

Sorry..

meguiars paste wax - supercheap or any car store

Nifti - supermarkets in the cleaning section

Shellite - Bunnings

Rags - ask your missus - If she is anything like mine, she wears it once and then it's mine :lol

In the old days - we used to go to Campbell's "Cash and Carry" and buy a box of nifti - 24 bottles...Ah the memories...

Nifti is just a cleaner that was used to clean just about anything years ago - when I was young.. Good for cleaning anything but plastics and translites

Some people use Mr Sheen, but thats more of a polisher.

nifti is very nifti at cleaning pinballs.

Nope - just looked it up, it has a polish in it so it has a cutting action. Leave it for the car.

You just want a wax... plain and simple. There was a thread a while back about a wax from bunnings which is supposed to be good, pure and long lasting, but I caouldn't find it...(the thread that is, I haven't looked for the wax yet)

There you go - I was a bit "suss" at the "cleaner" wax...

Bee's wax is also supposed to be good.

I use meguiars Yellow Carnuba paste wax. I bought it at supercheat around 5 years ago, and it's still half full.

Having done a few know the way I do it is

Wipe the playfield down with a damp rag to get rid of any heavy built up muck

Novus 2 the playfield

Novus1 to clean up any leftover residue

2 coats of wax,I use this stuff because its locally made and can be found in Bunnings but check the distributors list as other places sell it too

http://www.gillystephenson.com/listProduct/Maintenance/Wax

I use old tshirts and flano's as rags and if your arms arent sore after doing it your not trying hard enough:D

Having said all that I have just purchased one of Treasure Coves polishing kits so going to give that a try when it gets here

I find that after waxing with Mothers (awesome stuff. Very shiny). You will get dry wax dust on the playfield under ramps and plastics and areas you can't get to with a rag. I use a soft paitbrush to clean this up:)

What do you think of Novus 1, GIBO ? I've never really tested Novus 1 on playfields.

What's the issue with the liquid carnauba wax? I've heard of some people using the paste wax with a bit of water on the rag to apply it more easily, so was wondering what difference this would be to liquid? :unsure

I've confirmed that both the paste and the liquid contain distillates or hydro thingos.

I could only find the Mother's liquid from 6 auto stores. All the rest had Meguiars.

I think it is the water content in the liquid - it may find it's way into the wood and cause swelling - however minor it may crack the paint or make cracks worse ...

The hydrocarbon fears are based on yellowing/embrittling any plastics - especially clear like ramps...

Exactly - Water on playfields is a "no no:lol

My 1st pinball I bought - the op recommended mr sheen:o

I didn't think that was right (quite a lot of furniture manufacturers will not warrant it's use) - a quick check on RGP all those years ago fixed that misinformation for me :)
