Translite cleaning

I am wondering what the best product to clean the inside of my backglass and front of my translight is?

It had a oily residue, possibally from a previous cleaning attempt, which kind of stuck the translight to the glass, luckly it did not damage the translight.

I have removed but needs a light clean.

Is Windex ok??

It is off a HS2 pin.

I'm keen to know too. My IJ has dirty handprints from on it from years of being in operation I guess. The marks are on the white back of the translite itself - I don't want to do the wrong thing and bugger it!

They look fairly well made, but would hate to ruin one just for the sake of using the wrong product

Windex ?

Never, ever spray windex directly on a translite. Especially the white backing - no matter how dirty.

Obtain an empty container - like an ice cream container. Fill it 50% with water and then spray 5 shots of windex in the water. Dip a clean rag in the solution and then clean the translite in sections, rinsing in the windex solution. For really stubborn translites, spray on the RAG and then apply on the translite...

I learnt this the "Hard way" when I sprayed windex directly on my JP translite ..:x

What about Novus? (novus 1 of course) - I was just thinking that these are reverse printed plastic sheet - so they are similar to playfield plastics but very thin:unsure

I hate to ask, but what happened? was it like when they opened the Ark in indiana jones? :)

I hate to ask, but what happened?

The translite was stuck to the glass in the lower third of the glass. So if I pulled at the translite, it would have damaged it. I tried soaking it in water - it peeled SOME paint (dissolved ?). Eventually, the translite separated from the glass :) But - there was a milky residue left on the translite - and on the glass - that would have been what bonded them together. So I cleaned the glass first - no problem, came right off - just sprayed windex on, and wiped with a rag. So I thought I'd do the same with the front of the translite... Spray windex on the affected ares (and around it), and then I swiped with the rag = Artwork was dissolved onto the rag.. Most of the art is still there.. but it looks like a half moon of "lighter" art. Its basically faded in the area where the art "lifted"...

Cleaned many WMS translites.

Lay the translite out on a flat surface, kitchen table etc.

Run a cloth under warm water to wet the cloth through.

Wipe the translite surface. (this applies to both sides)

Once you've removed the loose muck and black dust, rinse the cloth clean.

Then rub the wet cloth on a bar of hand soap to get a little on the cloth.

Wipe the translite down again, the soap will remove any black dust etc missed by the first wipe down.

Rinse off with another wet cloth and dry the surface of the translite with a soft hand towel.

Used this method many times, always had great results and never damage one yet.

Nino, do you know if it was an original translite or a Bumper repro? The reason I ask is that I have always just sprayed Windex directly onto tranlites to clean and never had a problem.....that is until I tried to clean a Bumper repro translite (TFTC)and the Windex made the ink smudge. So in my experience I've never had a prob with Windex unless it was a Bumper repro. If yours was original, what happened to yours when you sprayed it with Windex?

I know Bumper used to have a lot of repro Date East translites for sale and is why I ask.

I should also say that Bumper happily replaced my translite when I told them of the issue.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm sure it's not a repro, and novus 1 or windex would be probabaly be ok, but I think I'll play it safe anyway and go for the gentle soap method.

The JP was original 100%, and windex adversely affected the art. I can attach a picture rather than explain it, if that helps :unsure

I also tried spraying windex on the reverse side of an Addams Family (white backing), and when I rinsed the translite, the result was white murky water, and it had definitely thinned the white backing.

I should have learnt this from the old days when I accidentally had a "brain freeze" and sprayed the reverse side of a williams "Big Deal", and the white sections in between the score windows magically disappeared..

Windex is for windows. Direct application to translites affected two out of two translites I used it on. Date East - Front artwork... Bally/Williams - reaer white backing.
