Brootal
I seem to remember reading somewhere the Wii doesn't have region encoding so you don't need to chip your Wii to play games from Europe? Is this correct? Can I just buy I UK Wii game and it will work? :unsure I know American games probably have the whole PAL/NTSC issue, but as far as I remember Europe is PAL. DevoDave
Europe is PAL so you should be fine.
elvis
Like most consoles, Wii is broken up into PAL: Europe, Australia, some parts of Oceania, some parts of the middle-east, some parts of South America. NTSC/J: Japan, Korea, and parts of east-asia. NTSC/U: The US of A. Buggers me where the rest of the world fits in (Africa for instance, not that I'd expect a lot of consoles out that way, although the southern half does have it's fair share of stupidly rich bastards). But yeah, any game that is zoned as "PAL" will work on an Aussie Wii. Brootal
Yea, there some stuff I want that's only been released in the UK, not Australia, I hate it when they do that, but as long as there's no additional Region encoding, I'll just have to find someone who'll ship it out for me. Moose74
Resurecting this thread....I have a dude who wants to sell me his Korean wii for $100. He bought it in Singapore and says that Aussie games wont play. I have found some wii NTSC/J torrents. Is it as simple as burning these on dvd and all will be sweet? :unsure Also he says the menu stuff is in chinese/mandarin, or whatever...can this be changed? Cheers, Moose. You need to find decent torrents. Best bet is to get a US machine and chip it.
elvis
Be careful when chipping/modding Wiis. Nintendo release regular updates that will brick your console (ie: make it useless). And don't be smart and think that just because you don't connect to the net you'll be right. Some games like Mario Galaxy and Zelda Twilight Princess have the patches built into the game, and will force them to install when you first play the game. Nintendo have been big anti-modders for a long time, and with the new consoles they have added in functions that will make sure most modchips are temporary. So far I've seen a few that have remained safe so far, but there's really no guarantee they'll stay that way. Long story short: educate yourself before modding a Wii, and make sure you've read up on the modchip you're using and the successes and failures of others. Nobody on earth will give you a warranty on a mod-chipped, bricked console.

DevoDave
I'll buy it! $100 is a damn good price, and I know my way around a Wii.

Administrators cwispy Posted June 26, 2008 Administrators Share Posted June 26, 2008 Be careful when chipping/modding Wiis. Nintendo release regular updates that will brick your console (ie: make it useless). Nintendo have yet to release a firmware update that bricks any Wii console. Where did you get this information from? The only thing that they have stopped so far is the Datel Freeloader disk from being run in the latest firmware. The mod chips themselves have remained unaffected by the firmware updates and will likely do so due to them being a hack on the dvd drive rather than the consoles firmware. A friend who had a very early model modchip that got bricked after one of the very first PAL Wii updates. Interesting you say it hasn't happened when I saw it with my own eyes. But perhaps things have improved since then?

Infact earlier versions of the wii key and such can get briked when being updated. I know this as i have had a few guys almost brick their wiis from going to update with the wii key installed. Normally what happens is the mod chip firmware providers say look dont update yet, we will have an update for the mod chips firmware within 24-48 hrs and once you apply that you can update without worry. DKong
I have been using the Wiikey, from around release time and have no troubles , I always do the PAL online update and make sure my Wii has the newest update before putting a new game in. Thus Wii is updated and won't update from the new disc or another region disc. (big problem) Another problem is the clone Wiikey chip which has been reported to brick Wii's in different manners, maybe something to do with the legitimate Wiikey updates not working on these clone chips:unsure There is also a utility around to patch games called brickblocker which removes the updates (I haven't used this as its for PC's and don't think there is one for OSX) I am yet to update to Wii V 3.3 as it removes freeloader support and I need that for SSBB, but I will soon when a new GOOD game comes out for the Wii. I suspect Super Mario Baseball will have the 3.3 update built in when released

I think you are getting confused between bricking using the wrong region firmware as opposed to bricking cause of an update. I have never ever heard or seen a unit bricked by the correct region firmware using any chip and ive been installing these things for years. I am also an active member on many of the console forums where this type of thing comes up all the time and the same thing has been said there many times. Out of region update will brick it, same region does not. The Wiikey modchip has had a lot of issues as well as being one of the most copied chips out there, so if a clone of that chip caused an issue, I would not be surprised.
