Most painless way to order from PBR?

Recommended Posts

I'm about to place an order with PBR for a bunch of parts for my Gottlieb Playball. According to their site they don't accept credit cards (will email anyways and ask though, may have changed) which is a right royal pain. I'm interested in hearing how other people have paid for their orders and how painful/expensive the process was as I've never had to send money overseas before other than through credit cards.

Thanks,

Joey

Joey,

I have ordered from PRB many times and the system that works for me is email. Since it is your first order, you will be requested to write a money order to PBR after you have been quoted the full amount. You then receive a customer number, and when they receive your money order, they ship the parcel. Usually takes 10 working days. The next time you order, the parcel will be shipped with an invoice prior to you writing a money order. It is a more honesty based system. The drawback is that they have no online facilities.

Warning - Steve can be abrupt and to the point. But he only made one mistake and he posted the part for free...

No, it's not a painful experience. Steve has zillions of parts, especially for Gottlieb EMs.

Western union money order, pretty easy to setup (uses your CC), phone call(local) required to confirm transfer. Sender pays the fees not the receiver (oppposite to paypal which is why sellers like it but ebay doesn't) 155 bucks aud cost me about 22 or so. So far I've never had a WU go up the creek but the operator will warn you not to send money to people that you do not know.

I have bought from just about all the major sellers, and the least painful in the end is PBR. You need to know what you want - not "That bit that goes between ...." but rather part numbers are king. I email a list of stuff I need get a response over night with prices or "not got" (the latter being rather rare!) and shipping is charged at the actual cost or near abouts. True, you need to pay after (except your first order), but I'm used to just going to the post office and buying a US money order - costs $8.00 plus $2.00 for the airmail envelope. $10.00 all up, and that is usually saved in the prices and postage from Steve's end. I think you get a 10% discount for over $100.00 US spend, I tend to keep a list in a draft email and send it off when I actually need something specific. Like someone else mentioned, rarely an error, and I once had a little error (missed a part, wasn't charged though) and they couldn't send the right bit over quick enough, I think I got it like 2 days later with a sorry note and replacement invoice.

Definately no credit card service. Don't forget to have a good look around the site - there's more stuff than you realise and some of the stuff is categorised under names that aren't that obvious.

Cheers,

Nick

I use PBR all the time as I only have Gottlieb pins, and what Nick says above, is the easiest and cheapest way of doing things. The US money order is the way to go. As far as postage goes he charges actual cost plus $3 IIRC.

I would also read this page carefully and adhere to the instuctions contained therein, or "no soup for you!!" http://www.pbresource.com/how2ordr.html

Good luck.

the post office is the cheapest place to get a money order I've found.

"Australia Post money orders cost $3.50, irrespective of the value. These are available to the maximum value of $1000. Bank cheques generally cost twice this or more."

Thats OK for Oz but for the US you need this:

Western Union International Money Orders

It's easy to send a money order to the USA. Western Union money orders are sold at all larger postal outlets.

They are issued in US dollars only, but can also be accepted as foreign currency deposit instruments outside the USA, at the discretion of the recipient’s bank.

Western Union international money orders make it easy to make payments up to $US1000 to payees in the USA. The cost is a fixed fee of just $8.65 (GST inclusive), irrespective of value.

Western Union international money orders must be paid into a bank account and will be subject to clearance just like a cheque.

The payee must have a local bank account in the destination country, so this product is generally unsuited to making payments to people travelling overseas.

In the USA, clearance of the funds takes approximately one week.

If a bank in another country chooses to accept these $US items, extended clearance times will apply.

These money orders cannot be cashed at post offices either in Australia or overseas.

thanks terry007 for correction

When ordering from the US I try to find place willing to send via USPS (United States Postal Service) it usually arrives on my door in a week anyway (once sent). There is no tracking facility but so far haven't had an issue.

Same from England (say Ultimarc), I ask for post office delivery.

Other US deliveries with tracking and subsequent higher cost:

* EMS (this is USPS express mail service )

* UPS

* FedEx

this excludes brokerage and customs fees if applicable

Buying from PBR is painless all the time. The cheapest way to pay is by Money Order in US$, costs you about $8 at the post office.

If you do a wire transfer to their account PBR charge you US$30 because of their bank transfer fees (That's what the bank charges them). This is the fastest method but most expensive.

If you want your parts quick you will need to send them the money order by Express Post or even better Express Courier. I sent my last payment by Express post and it took almost 2 weeks to get there.
