Quieter push buttons

opm881

Question

So I am sick of having to wait till no one is home to play on my cab because of the click noise the push buttons make. I am using the standard micros that ozstick package with their push buttons and joysticks but i am trying to look for something a bit quieter. I remeber there was a tutorial about making normal micros quieter (cant remeber the link) using some paper but I am not sure how well that would go. I know there are leaf switches but the only pics of leaf switches that ive seen use a huge piece of plastic and I really dont have room for that in my cab. So, any ideas?

I've been installing some buttons I bought from Groovy Game Gear recently that have "Genuine Happ" microswitches.

I'm finding them about 30-40% quieter than the black micro's with the OzStick buttons.

Other than that, I'd suggest investigating the micoswitch mod... basically it just involved putting a small slither of paper over the metal that the switch 'clicks' against. HOWEVER, I would recommend getting a tiny piece of adhesive vinyl or other 'more durable' material so that it doesn't slip off or wear out.

In fact, I might try that mod in the next few days on some OzStick micros and let you know how I go.

just tried that with a spare zippy i had from the cab before i stripped it. I just put some paper in between the nc pad and the lever and tested that and it seems quiet enough. Figure might just get some adhesive vinyl or something like that and put a little square on each of the NC pads. thanks

Alright, I just grabbed two OzStick microswitches and decided to do a little experiment. True to form, I looked around me and wondered what I could improvise with (thus modding the mod).

I removed the top pin (normally closed pin) which is rarely used in normal control panel setups. I snipped off the end of a regular plastic cable tie and inserted it (as shown in the picture). The result would have to be 70 to 80% QUIETER and also more responsive (easier to press).

Bloody awesome, this took all of 30 seconds to do. I will now do it to all of my pushbuttons as when they're sealed back up and put in the control panel they're almost inaudiable (most of the noise is from the plastic of the button itself now).

... just uploading a youtube clip ... I'll see if it makes the sound difference obvious.

I am really happy with the leaf switch buttons I bought from mikes arcade. They are damn nice.

Not cheap but they are dead quiet and are a lot better to play games on. More responsive, etc.

Look 'em up and order a couple just so you know what they're like.
