wingtipvortex
Only a few short hours now till they smash a few atoms into each other"real fast"! Hold on to your pinballs boys n girls, this "could" be it!!! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7543089.stm
MadMikeAU
If I understand it, they are trying to smash sub atomic particles into one another (obviously in a differnt way to the way that its been done before, or something)...and then looking at the paths used by the remaining particles. Kind of like Rutherford did with the alpha particles into gold to discover the makeup of the atom. But looking even smaller. 6 billion bucks for this?!? Would suck if they miss !!!:badgrin
MetalSkin
actually it's really interesting reading how they handle a situation where they miss. I love some of the comments on an article on news.com.au, things like: Chuck Norris doesn't look for God Particles, he creates them Every time Chuck blinks his eyelids crush atoms. :lol

MetalSkin
I want them to put mad mike in that fucking machine and see what happens :unsure This is what would happen: A fly... got into the... transmitter pod with me that first time, when I was alone. The computer... got confused - there weren't supposed to be two separate genetic patterns - and it decided to... uhh... splice us together. It mated us, me and the fly. We hadn't even been properly introduced. :lol

DKong
Supposedly 5.30 pm our time. Caught the end of a doco on it on SBS last night, basically finding what gives things mass, it was interesting that one of the scientists was hoping they find nothing as this means there is an even bigger unknown element or something along those lines:unsure

Must be something else there. :unsure
PeterW
It's been nice knowin' you people :cry Don't worry. If they open up any black holes, Captain Picard will close them before anything gets out of hand. :D
Womble
I don't get what the fuss is all about - they are only powering up the entire 27km ring today, they might even try and send things round it, but they are not going to do the collision part today, thats slated from october towards the end of the year. MetalSkin
Don't worry. If they open up any black holes, Captain Picard will close them before anything gets out of hand. :D That is highly illogical. James T Kirk is the only one to come back this far in time, Picard didn't come back this far in time. Please keep your Star Trek references within the realm of reality! RaMpAgE
Maybe the amount of money spent on this waste of time would be better spent on a fusion reactor for energy needs. I for one don't give a hoot about the big bang:rolleyes

Please keep your Star Trek references within the realm of reality! I beg to differ, Ensign! :D Q sent Picard back to a time before humans had even evolved on Earth (the final episode of series 7) and he also visited 18th century Earth in the double-episode "Time's Arrow" (series 5). If anyone can do it, it will be Picard. ;)

Btw, didn't realise that, mainly because I only ever watched that new upstart of a star trek series. :)
Administrators Brad Posted September 10, 2008 Administrators Share Posted September 10, 2008 Actually they're trying find the "The European science organisation CERN hopes these experiments will uncover the theoretical Higgs-Boson particle and some more information on the nature of matter." Essentially Dark Matter which has been theorised for years. They reckon it's dark matter that fills in the gaps between particles in space time etc. Stephen Hawking has placed a $100.00 bet that they won't find it but find something else instead. It's going to be interesting. If you haven't, you should read "A Brief History Of Time" by Hawking. Brad

Btw, didn't realise that, mainly because I only ever watched that new upstart of a star trek series. :) I watched the original Star Trek as a kid so approached TNG with some trepidation when it was first aired. But I grew to love it. Picard is a pretty cool character. BTW there is a new movie in production right now, set in the original series era, but with all new actors playing the original characters (Kirk, Spock, etc). Basically a prequel. It's due out mid-2009. Here is a short trailer: http://www.startrekmovie.com/ And the original series is now available fully remastered with all graphical elements updated with CGI to current standards. You can watch them online.

AdamC
We could always send the Doc back and fix it up ! http://www.bttfmovie.com/modules/images/1955/large/1955_doc_d.jpg Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads… I think the results of this test would be interesting, i watch a documentary the other week about the Dark Matter , and why they couldnt account for about 25% of the universes matter. Must be something else there. :unsure Nope, they didn't break that rule at all. they converted mass to energy.....mass is energy, all they are doing is releasing stored energy, golden rule of energy conservation still exists. Anyway, back onto the ring thingy, I'm surprised all this doomsday talk, if they create a mini black hole it would be kinda cool, but it's hardly the risk they make it out to be. Just goes to show how ignorant even some of the supposed experts are on the matter
