Mickey Juice
How much does it cost to get a domain name? Is it better to get .com.au? How do you go about it? I think .au's are higher in price than just normal .com's. (can anyone confirm?)
Viper
.com.au is more pricey. also you need to have an ABN to register for one (supposeldy). Check out: http://www.planetdomain.com.au to get an idea. I use http://www.godaddy.com/ for my .com domain as I found them to be regarded as one of the best all round for price and service in my investigations (not the best service, not the best price, but excellent all round and have a HUUUUUGE global subscription). To have a .com.au or .net.au you need to have an ABN. To have a .org.au you need to be a registered 'not for profit' organisation. To have a .info.au i think it has to be your own name. check the regulations on that though. Australia has a seperate body to govern anything with a .au A .com, .net etc. however can be had by anybody hence it's harder to find what you want but much cheaper. sairuk
also use godaddy for my .com domain ... had no issues thus far with them $8 or so US for a .com domain works for me use melbit for my .com.au domain .. expensive $100+ for 2yrs ..., but i'll be letting that lapse next time as the business is closed down now. MadMikeAU
I tried godaddy and a bunch of others, ALL required a credit card (which I dont have). GoDaddy accepts paypal but only from paypal account with credit cards...argggghh Anyway, I came across this lot http://www.gem3.com that accept paypal with out credit card. Quite resonable as well, $9 a year for a .com.
LOTR4U
Domain Names I paid $66 dollars for our domain here, got it for 2 years. Pretty sweet deal I think. They are cracking down on the .com.au domains. From my understanding you need a ABN and be trading as that name eg ABN xxxxxxxxx Trading as : Billy Bods Arcade billybobsarcade.com.au So you can just put down any ABN number you want. They sent our mail just recently saying they will be doing checks. cheers
Mushroom
If you want to be more searchable on the web ".com.au" would probably be the better option to use. Im not totally sure on this, but i believe that if a user on google who tries refining their seach critera by clicking on "Australia only search" , (which alot of people do ) then you will probably have a better chance of coming up in the results page... MadMikeAU
I changed my mind about the content of the site (for now at least) so using my ABN, etc was no longer necessary as it will be a hobby site.
